For many years, our yachting association has been organizing amateur regattas. And somehow... I can’t remember whose idea it was, but it sounded something like this: what if we held not just a regatta, but “invented” a real adventure?

The night was quiet and moonless. Silent shadows slid along the narrow streets of the Greek village. Sometimes the shadows talked, and hardly any of the local residents understood what they were talking about, for the language of the shadows was fast, although melodious. But there was nothing to worry about, it was not the attackers who were up to no good, but the Russian yachtsmen were looking for treasure.
For many years, our yachting association has been organizing amateur regattas. And somehow... I can’t remember whose idea it was, but it sounded something like this: what if we held not just a regatta, but “invented” a real adventure? Then the shaky idea began to acquire details, details, taking shape and blooming with colors. In the end, we were already talking about a full-fledged quest, that is, an exciting search for something very, very, very valuable in a specific, separate territory, or rather, in relation to our case - in the water area. The “treasure,” as expected in the quest, can be found by those who can solve the puzzles, which, when solved, will magically turn into clues. What is important is that the quest was to become thematic, tightly connected with the history of the places where it would take place. And finally, the search for the “treasure” should be organically linked with sailing races.
The task was set, the rules were formulated, all that remained was to choose a route. And we chose him, with considerable respect inviting into the game probably the most famous character in the history of navigation - King Odysseus. This means that our path lay in the region where he once ruled with his characteristic wisdom and cunning - to the Ionian Islands.
Quiet place
Not much has changed on these distinctive islands since the times described by Homer. Life here flows smoothly, slowly and calmly, without the fuss, excesses and costs of modern civilization. We fully appreciated these undoubted advantages on the very first day upon arrival, when an employee of one of the restaurants caught up with our already launched yachts on a boat to return a wallet forgotten in the restaurant.
“Thank you,” we said, quite surprised.
“You’re welcome,” he smiled, hardly understanding why we were surprised.
The Ionian Islands are the most beautiful archipelago in the Mediterranean. Admiring them, lush green, mountainous, with golden beaches and steep white cliffs, washed by the purest turquoise water, we solved the first riddle: why was Odysseus so eager to return here? Yes, because he was born in a beautiful country! And beauty has an amazing attractive power...
The sea gently rocked the yachts, and we rejoiced at the sun and warmth, and also at the fact that an extensive coastal program awaited us. It was not even disappointing that the weak wind made significant adjustments to the race schedule towards their reduction.
It should be noted here that due to the complex structure of the quest regatta, the number of yachts had to be limited: we settled on four. The quest participants, accustomed to our crowded regattas, were at first quite surprised, but already in the first two days the advantages of a small number of yachts became visible - everyone got to know each other, became friends, and actually became one big team. This was facilitated by the fact that we started from the island of Lefkada, which does not have an airport. We traveled through Athens with subsequent transfer. And there are no better circumstances for getting to know everyone than seven hours of travel across the entire Peloponnese. All sorts of wonders floated past the windows of our bus, and one of them was the Corinth Canal. We admired the mountains, gardens, tiny towns and villages, and were serene and relaxed, although in fact we were going through the first stage of our quest, at the end of which the marina, yachts and the search for the treasure of King Odysseus awaited us.
First steps
We reached the marina late in the evening. We had to spend the night in Lefkada, the old town with colorful houses and narrow streets. Tomorrow is the start.
In the morning, each yacht received a flag with a number, a volume of the Odyssey and a bag of gold coins, which will be used to pay for losses in races and incorrectly completed quest tasks. And - good luck, brave sailors!
We're going south. The weather is sun and a light breeze, which becomes weaker every hour and eventually dies down completely. The finish line is here, and yet not all participants manage to reach it in the agreed time. Well, but everyone is waiting for an evening quest that can help those lagging behind in the race. And indeed, almost everyone copes with the task and correctly chooses from the proposed traditional Greek menu the dishes described in the Odyssey.
