Style Hipsters in clothes of the 50s. Photos of successful images for women and men. Fashion prints

Lately , people have been loving to hold dude-themed parties. But why does this style attract people so much now and attract people almost 70 years ago? A challenge. She gives freedom. From boredom, standard, dullness of everyday life, prejudices. In the USSR, young people tried to break out of the shackles of the difficult post-war time, when the country was trying to start living anew.

Tilyags were not accepted by “normal” society; they looked askance at these reckless loafers who worshiped Western delights. Now a person gets tired of the supersonic pace of life and sometimes dreams of turning back time, plunging into a party where they listen to music not through USB or gadgets, but in secret, sophisticated ways. Where they look like a paint factory exploded. Bright, catchy, comfortable for dancing... A hipster is a special feeling and an amazing, vibrant element of the fashion world.

Characteristics and features of the Hipsters style

The 40s of the last century were overshadowed by the hardships of the Second World War. The mood in society was reflected in the fashion of those years. The war was over, it was time to enjoy the world, and the asceticism and minimalism of the 40s were replaced by the fashion for full skirts, bright expensive fabrics and many carefully selected accessories in the 50s.

The new style originated in the capital of world fashion - Paris. In the Soviet Union, followers of the new trend were called dudes. Style features are found in most models of those years, but in a refined, sometimes exaggerated form they reign in the clothes of advanced youth.

The fashion of the new style of the 50s has common features:

  • Dresses with a belted waist and wide skirt. To add pomp, a full petticoat was worn under the skirt.
  • The dresses were decorated with a deep neckline, and the abundance of trimmings further emphasized the femininity of the image. Any evening outfit of those years was characterized as a hymn to the beauty of the owner.
  • The clothes are dominated by bright, cheerful colors and shades. Fabric designs are also varied; floral prints compete in popularity with polka dots, multi-colored checks and stripes.
  • Fashionable for those years was a skirt length of a palm below knee level. The waistband of the skirt is located 3-4 cm higher than the natural position of the waist, providing a seductive narrowing of the female figure. With this distribution of proportions, in combination with high-heeled shoes or girlish ballet shoes, the female figure acquires proportions close to ideal.
  • Hairstyles are dominated by raised hair, backcombing and curled curls.

Refined femininity was offered in clothing for various purposes. The image of the 50s companion is also colorful and extravagant.

Who are the dudes?

In the middle of the last century, a specific term meant not only a fashion trend. Hipsters are a certain way of life, non-standard thinking, atypical behavior.

For the Soviet Union, the appearance of young people in bright, extravagant costumes was an amazing phenomenon. The country had barely recovered from the severe consequences of World War II, and life for the people was still difficult and harsh. Against the backdrop of gray everyday life, colorfully dressed young people dancing jazz and twist to foreign music were a frank challenge to the entire society.

The main ideas of the style came from overseas. Foreign films and photographs of famous movie characters amazed the imagination with the beauty of their spectacular outfits. In distant America, people lived a rich, cheerful life, inaccessible to Soviet people. The newly formed dudes drew inspiration from the echoes of a foreign country and cultivated a new way of life.

Young people were accused of parasitism, lack of spirituality and imitation. For the first time the writer D. Belyaev called them dudes. The satirical magazine “Crocodile”, the newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda” and other publications harshly ridiculed the ridiculous and absurd fashion.

Stylish wardrobe from the 50s: characteristic features

Hipsters (photos of clothes for women of the 50s of the last century characterize them well) came into fashion following the “new look” style. The appearance of the style is associated with the collections of the famous fashion designer of those years, Christian Dior.

Dresses

A beautiful dress became a necessary type of women's clothing in the 50s. The most common silhouette for a dude style dress is an hourglass. A narrow bodice with a slightly high waist accentuated by a belt is combined with a full skirt. The petticoat was made from several layers of fabric and was subsequently starched.

Corset cut lines are coming back into fashion. In evening and elegant dresses, previously forgotten whalebone is used.

A woman in such a dress always has success with the male half of society. An example of the fashion of those years can be considered the role of Lyudmila Gurchenko in the Soviet film “Carnival Night”. A wasp waist, a sloping shoulder line and an extended skirt of the correct length - all this adds up to the ideal image of a Soviet beauty.

The second popular style of those years (usually made from polka dot fabric) had a skirt that was tapered at the bottom. The waist of the adjacent dress is a couple of centimeters below the natural position. Everyone remembers the role of Marilyn Monroe in the movie Some Like It Hot.

For a woman, the ideal figure was considered to be slightly plump by today's standards.

The proportions of a 50s dress best “balance” extra pounds, but only for a figure with a pronounced waist. Modern fashion designers use the proportions of a new look dress to give ideal proportions to a figure with extra pounds.

Skirts

Hipsters (photos of clothes for women of the 50s are kept in every family) dressed very femininely. A suitable skirt for the style falls to the palm below the knees or ends at mid-calf. This length looks best on a woman wearing high-heeled shoes. The second positive effect of a full skirt in the “Carnival Night” style is that it sways very beautifully when the girl moves.

With the advent of the new style, not only the woman’s appearance has changed, Dior’s contemporary can already afford femininity and softness, she no longer needs to be strong and endure the hardships of difficult times. High heels are back in fashion, and sexy curves are achieved with shapewear. A tapered skirt suggests a feminine gait and leisurely step.

The slot on the back panel of the skirt allows you to climb stairs and get into the car beautifully.

Blouses

Seductive blouses were worn with skirts. Made from translucent crepe chiffon, they perfectly emphasized the beauty of the owner. Often the sleeves in the cuff area had small folds or gathers; the voluminous head of the sleeve was supposed to emphasize the thin waist and X-silhouette of the garment.

In summer blouses, puffy puff sleeves exposed the arms. In the flashlight, the top and bottom of the sleeve were gathered. Blouses were richly decorated with embroidery and decorative cutting lines. The shirt for girls was also feminine and fitted.

In the fashion of the 50s, a deep neckline was allowed, combined with raised breasts and a lack of thinness - this undoubtedly creates a very feminine image.

Trousers

For the feminine style of dudes, trousers were not a common type of clothing. But it is impossible to imagine active recreation with trips to nature without this part of the wardrobe. Several models of that time (pipes, capri pants, Bermuda shorts) are distinguished by a slight fit in the hips and a narrower bottom.

The high waist in the pipe trousers model improved the proportions, the length was shortened at mid-calf level. Girls with a good figure wore shorts of moderate length and high waist. Fasteners on trousers were often decorated with finishing buttons. An imitation fastener at the bottom of the trouser leg was also a finishing element.

Even while maintaining a utilitarian role, dude trousers were distinguished by their femininity and the presence of finishing elements.

Jackets

Hipsters (photos of clothes for women of those years tell about existing preferences) complemented the look with a fitted jacket. The shapes and types of stylish jackets fit well into a modern wardrobe.

Jacket models from the 50s still serve as examples of tailoring art today. Sewing fitted jackets was complex and was made exclusively to order according to the client’s measurements. Even then, tailors embodied any ideas of their clients, making up for the lack of beautiful clothes on the shelves of Soviet Russia.

How to dress?

After looking at a visual photo of how dudes dressed, you will immediately understand. The main thing is to use bright colors in clothes. In the question of how to dress in a dude style for a man or a woman, the following rules will help:

  1. Colors. To look like a dude, you need to use several bright colors in your image, but these colors must match each other. Any pastel colors that are not bright enough should be excluded. Black and white colors can and should be used. Also pay attention to neon colors, their brightness will do the trick. Your image should be juicy and cheerful. For girls, a cool color scheme would be to use several colored petticoats.
  2. Prints. What makes dudes stand out most is their prints. The most common prints are large polka dots, stripes (both horizontal and vertical), various images of geometric shapes or patterns.
  3. Fabrics. Since the style of dudes is characterized by bright colors, artificial fabrics have to be used, because they are the ones that are able to convey all the brightness of the color palette.
  4. Accessories. Much attention should be paid to accessories. The peculiarity of dudes is that they use hats and gloves not for their intended purpose, but as decoration. Thus, dudes wear hats and long gloves all year round. Women use massive jewelry, such as a large number of bracelets, beads, and earrings. Most often, costume jewelry is made of plastic. Contrasting ties and bow ties are a must for men, and scarves and scarves for women. Girls also often use colored ribbons to highlight their waist or braid their hair. A common element in the wardrobe of all dudes are colored socks, which in combination with bright shoes will make your look great.

Illustrative photos can serve as examples of stunning images for the upcoming party. How the dudes, girls and men, dressed is clearly visible on them.

Color solutions and fashionable prints on clothes of the 50-60s.

The girls dressed very brightly. In fashion were: orange, wine, shades of red, emerald. The riot of colors emphasized the femininity of the image. Strict gray and black coexisted with bright colors of the palette. Color combinations of style may be unusual for modern taste: black and yellow or red and yellow.

Fashionable prints of the 50s can also be considered as a hymn to femininity:

  • peas of different sizes;
  • poppy dots;
  • flowers;
  • geometric patterns, stripes, checks.

Prints with a large pattern repeat over the entire width of the fabric are very popular. Such fabrics are specially created for a bright feminine dress.

For women

Girls dressed up exclusively in fluffy dresses or skirts, emphasizing their femininity and playfulness at the same time. Countless shades, details, petticoats that swirled, riding up while dancing. Insanely bright colors accompanied them throughout. You could wear a set of a skirt and blouse, but it is very important that they fit together and look like a single whole with a belt. Despite all the absurdity of colors and styles, the dudes dressed very stylishly (it’s not for nothing that they were called that). The sleeves of blouses or dresses could be completely different, most often ¾, 2/3 or wings were used, but they also wore long, puffed sleeves, or they could not be there at all; there were no restrictions in this aspect.

Dresses were decorated with circle, stripe, checkered or floral prints. The more prints, the brighter the image and the better it looks. A narrow waist, often cinched with a wide patent belt, a tight-fitting bodice - the maximum sexuality of forms, challenging Soviet foundations. Spaghetti straps, revealing stockings, daring behavior, bold makeup, lined eyes and brightly painted lips. The difference was striking between Soviet girls in shapeless, dull clothes and bright feminine forms, which were emphasized by the contrast between a full skirt with a narrow cinched waist. Very often, such dresses were complemented with round beads, bracelets and other jewelry.

Hipsters were divided into castes: flashy cheap looks or laconic fashionable looks straight out of American magazines. Color variety was not always a significant criterion, but an outlandish pattern, expensive earrings, a confident gait and the ability to dance decided everything. Girls of the second type could afford to wear a laconic black dress or a tight-fitting narrow skirt, without losing a bit of the polish of the dudes.

Fabrics

The chemical industry has not yet had time to provide Dior’s contemporaries with fabrics made from synthetics, fashionable in the 60s. All fabrics are natural, they required ironing and careful handling. For a summer wardrobe, natural and artificial silk, linen and fine wool are used. Fabrics such as crepe chiffon, fabrics with satin and satin weave are in fashion.

Winter required a transition to thick woolen fabrics and knitted fabric. Even woolen dress fabrics were dyed in beautiful complex shades. During the cold season, the female half also tried to look feminine and seductive

Materials

To sew fashionable suits, materials of different densities and structures are used. The most popular is suiting fabric, which produces elegant and practical products. Tweed, wool blend with polyester, knitwear, and supplex are widely used. These materials have excellent air permeability, absorb moisture well and have high technical performance.

Mixed fabric based on bamboo, viscose and synthetic threads (acrylic, nylon, lycra, polyester) is in great demand. Viscose or cotton socks, a felt or linen hat, and a silk or satin tie effectively complement the suit.

Accessories

The handbag was intended only for the most necessary things, neat and small, more often it was a clutch. A small style attribute was made in contrasting colors with clothes, or the same color as shoes.

Sunglasses were in fashion. The frame is large, bright colors or horn.

Where did it all start?

In the 40s, the government allowed society to see how Europeans lived due to the fact that the USSR began to actively cooperate with other countries.

Did you belong to this subculture?

NOT REALLY

Popular magazines and records with foreign compositions were imported from other countries. Young people attended foreign film shows. People liked the behavior model that was shown in the films. These were free citizens with unlimited rights and opportunities. Everyone dressed based on their personal preferences, and not like everyone else. Young people imitated the actors and copied the behavior of their favorite heroes. In fact, Americans and Europeans did not live as described in the films. But at that time in the USSR they did not think about it.

Shawls and scarves

It was fashionable to complement a high hairstyle with a tied bright scarf. Often such a scarf was made of thin gauze fabric. A small scarf was tied with the ends up, a thin large one went around the head twice and was tied at the bottom under the hair.

Clothes were complemented with natural shawls and scarves, tied or beautifully draped around the neck.

Entertainment

Depending on the preferences of your guests, you can arrange a variety of competitions and games.

Of course, it is difficult to imagine a party without dancing. Prepare an incendiary selection of music, consisting of compositions by Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and others.

By the way, you can use our selection of rock and roll music.

Various master classes will be an excellent and exciting activity at the holiday. These could be “boogie-woogie” lessons or a master class on stylish hair styling.

You can also hold a competition or quiz on your knowledge of “stylish” slang.

Shoes

Hipsters (photos of clothes for women speak eloquently about the tastes of those years) wore shoes with heels, up to seven centimeters high. The shape of the heel was different: a stable wide heel or an elegant glass. In the summer, ballet flats were in fashion.

Shoes with a thin “semolina crust” were the prototype of modern Oxfords.

Soviet dudes, or “Who are we friends against?”

It is interesting that Soviet morality perceived the clothes of dudes with hostility, as vulgar bad taste and a manifestation of rootless cosmopolitanism. However, after several years, the domestic light industry began producing those very stylish sweaters with deer and colorful fabrics in the notorious polka dots, stripes and checks. What had recently been blasted to smithereens, for which they were expelled from the Komsomol and expelled from the institute, suddenly became decent and was recommended as completely appropriate for the builders of communism. Now hippies and beatniks were declared enemies of society.

Hair and makeup

A hairstyle always best reflects the style of a particular time.

Along with complex hairstyles, there were also simple options:

  • When there was no time or the hair did not differ in volume, they backcombed it.
  • Her beautiful shoulder-length hair was curled into ringlets.
  • The hair above the forehead was curled and styled into symmetrical curls; this hairstyle was called the “crown of the world.”
  • Long hair was styled in a high updo. A bow is formed from the hair as a decoration. The second hairstyle option for long hair is loose, beautiful curls, complemented by a “crown of peace.”
  • Girls also wore short haircuts, complementing them with a bright ribbon or a beautiful headband.

At a time when most Soviet women preferred makeup in natural tones, followers of the dudes style used very bright lipstick colors. Wine, carrot and bright red were in fashion. The eyes were also clearly highlighted with arrows or the use of several tones of shadows.

Menu

There is no special style menu - the guys gathered for the sake of music, dancing and fun, without thinking about gastronomic pleasures. In order not to spoil the atmosphere, take as a basis dishes popular in the USSR: Moscow salad, fish salad, spring salad, herring under a fur coat. Hot dishes: tobacco chicken, roast with mushrooms and meat, Moscow-style stellate sturgeon, chops, cutlets. By the way, there will be “old” jars of condensed milk, sprat in tomato, sprats, etc. (you can print the labels and re-glue them). If a feast is not planned, organize a rainbow buffet - carvings, tartlets, canapés, baskets with meat, mushrooms and salads.

For a themed party, dude drinks are much more important - champagne, whiskey and cola, punches, cognac and lemonades. And, of course, real stylish cocktails, bright and colorful, beautifully decorated - with umbrellas, pieces of fruit, twisted straws, in decorated glasses and glasses. Cocktail Carnival (one of the most expensive in the Cocktail Hall) - five unmixed multi-colored layers of liqueur. Cocktail “Amber” - champagne with a spoonful of liqueur and a drop of tangerine jam.

Examples and ideas for images

For inspiration in creating an image of those years, old photographs and films of past years can serve. The modern film “Hipsters” very successfully conveys the mood and beauty of style outfits.

For girls

An outfit in the style of dudes is a good choice for elegant children's clothing. A girl who is dressed up in bright dresses from childhood will grow up with a developed taste in clothes. Stylish dresses for girls are bright with a short bodice. A bright fluffy petticoat peeks out from under the hem of the bell skirt.

It will be important to give the girl a beautiful hairstyle.

Long laid curls or stylized as an adult “bobette” are decorated with a bright ribbon. White short socks are worn under bright patent leather shoes or sandals. Bright beads and the same bracelet on her wrist complement the image of the young fashionista.

For boys

Against the background of a strict school uniform, an outfit in the style of a dude will delight the child. An important part of the set will be comfortable trousers. Made from stretch fabric, they will not restrict the child's movements. The color of the trousers should be in harmony with the color of the bright shirt and jacket in a bright check. The suit is completed with a bright bowtie or a “stylish orange tie.”

The child's long bangs are styled into a bun.

For women

Today it is much easier to create a fashionable 50s style. In Soviet times, there was not such an abundance of fabrics of various colors and different compositions. In order to make a multilayer petticoat, it is enough to take dense fabric or tulle of high density and the product will not need to be starched. The required volume is created thanks to the qualities of the source material.

You can wear modern shapewear under your dress; it is much more comfortable than many years ago.

Dude style dresses were created with the condition that they would be comfortable to dance in. Modern stretch silks and satin fabrics are very suitable for clothing with this purpose.

For men

The main thing in the image will be pipe trousers. They are small in volume and narrow at the bottom. The length should not fall below the bones, thus showing the world bright socks and patent leather shoes. Fitted jacket with extended shoulder line. Fabric with large colored checks or stripes.

The shirt should match the image, bright colors and small volume. In the fashion of those years, such an outlived style element as the Hawaiian shirt appeared. A winter look can be complemented with a knitted sweater with animal prints in a Scandinavian style. A tie in the then fashionable herring format with bright stripes.

A young man's hair can be styled in a bun that was fashionable at the time.

Fashion has come a long way, but replicas are often found on fashion catwalks. This probably explains why, for stylized parties and other events, a stylish style is so often used in clothing, uniting all the guests. Photos of wedding fashion and holiday parties will be doubly interesting in the recognizable style of the recent beautiful past.

For men

In the modern world, there is a stereotype that a guy’s image and appearance are not so important, but this does not apply to dudes. It is difficult to determine whose appearance was more colorful and bolder. The basis of the men's wardrobe of dudes was tapered colorful trousers with suspenders and a jacket - a daring analogy of the classic men's suit. The jackets were very different from those worn by most in those years. Elongated, fitted, with sewn pockets, massive shoulders - there was no end to the styles, but all demonstrated a masculine silhouette and clear lines (unlike the Soviet, most often shapeless jackets). The most popular was large checkered or plain fabric. Sometimes jackets and other details combined several colors at once, looking like spots. To this style of clothing, the men often added vests, jumpers, and pullovers, which were often also with patterns. The completion of the look was, of course, a shirt and a narrow tie (it is also called a “herring tie”), all in incredibly bright colors - this was their style; men’s fashion among the dudes played no less a role than women’s. It is worth mentioning one more detail - colorful socks, partly to demonstrate them, the dudes specially wore shortened trousers.

Where has the youth movement gone?

In the early 60s, the subculture almost ceased to exist after Nikita Khrushchev came to power. Then young people had many new privileges.

The dudes were against the gray masses and the system imposed by the government. They wanted to stand out from society and strived for freedom. However, there were no aggressive protests or uprisings. The younger generation was just having fun and leading a slightly different lifestyle. They didn't want to be like everyone else.

Hipster girls

After this, some members of the movement became musicians, someone wrote a book. But the dudes learned to stand out and, above all, to be independent.

This was a step into a new, free life. The result of the existence of dudes is a completely different cultural level.
