A birthday quest is an interesting and unusual way to give a child a gift, and is also a great option for entertaining holiday guests at home. The event will be truly exciting and memorable.
We present a ready-made scenario for a thematic quest based on the fairy tale “The Wizard of the Emerald City” . Suitable for children aged 6-9 years. Can be done at home or in the yard. The goal of the game is to find a birthday gift or some prizes for all participants by following the clues in the notes. The passage time is from 40 minutes (depending on how well the notes are hidden).

Where is the best place to hide hints and tasks for an escape room at home?
The whole point of the quests is to guess and find places where the clue for the next step will be hidden. In order not to turn the birthday into turning the whole room upside down, riddles are hidden in advance. Here are the most convenient places for this:
- Pieces of furniture (windows, chairs, chests of drawers, tables, etc. can be easily encrypted).
- Sofa cushions.
- Refrigerator, oven, microwave - any household appliances.
- It's convenient to hide notes under the carpet.
- Interior items - paintings, boxes, vases.
- Souvenirs from trips containing the names of cities.
- Suitcases equipped with combination locks.
It’s good to use inflated balloons with notes hidden inside as clues; boxes with sand in which small objects are hidden; cookies whose filling contains a fortune; a variant of the previous one is candy, the wrappers of which can be decorated with any letters. Less commonly used are pots with plants and dishes on the birthday table.
Sudoku
You need to cut out the pictures and arrange them in free cells so that the images are repeated only once in each row and in each column
Features of quests at home
The goal of home birthday quests is to turn congratulations and presenting a gift to the hero of the occasion into an extraordinary show. The main advantages of such events are that you do not need to learn any roles or show your talents as a presenter. All that is required is to prepare the tests in advance and distribute them to the selected locations. The work plan is as follows:
- Determine who will take part in the event - age and number of children. If adults also go through the quest with children, they must be taken into account. Older relatives usually take part in such games with pleasure and are very helpful if any of the planned puzzles confuse the children.
- Choose a suitable area for the game - this can be both indoors and outdoors. Remove fragile or valuable items to prevent them from being accidentally damaged during play. If the event will be held on the street, it is necessary to somehow define the boundaries of the tasks so that the children, carried away by the game, do not run far away.
- Choose your hiding spots carefully. They should not be very clear, otherwise they will find out everything quickly and the entertainment will be stopped. The difficulty should be adjusted according to the age of the participants. When choosing a height to hide the tips, be guided by their height. If the game takes place in an open area, make sure that your preparations are not disturbed by strangers - if some of the clues are found by them, the game will not take place. You can provide for the possibility of receiving tips for participants performing simple creative numbers - songs or dances.
- When places for hiding places are selected, make a chain of tasks. For preschoolers, this can be a 2-6 step search scheme; school-age children can be offered a dozen or more tasks in the quest. The first of the clues will be given by the presenter; you can also arrange this stage in an unusual and original way - place it so that the children find it by chance or invite an accomplice who, at the right moment, will leave the clue at the front door and ring the bell. Teens can be sent an SMS or video by email to help them start their search. Great delight is caused by the delivery of envelopes by couriers who deliver food for the holiday. Think over this point in advance, especially if during the quest the snacks or combo sets you brought may become cold. Using the first clue, children independently determine where to look for the second, the second contains instructions for searching for the third, and so on.
- Determine the point where the game ends and the prize is awarded. Prepare incentive souvenirs for all participants - these could be small candies, chocolate medals, badges, keychains. The main gift, of course, should go to the birthday boy.
- Decide on the course of action. If you don’t have much experience in conducting such events, it is recommended to conduct a linear quest. It is convenient because all tasks are performed sequentially. After its successful implementation, you can take on other options for the event.
Rebuses
Basic rules for solving puzzles:
- the picture in the rebus represents a specific word; commas mean how many letters need to be taken away at the beginning or end of a word;
- if there is a “=” sign between the letters, then it is necessary to replace one letter in the word with another;
- if one letter is located “under,” “above,” or “in” another letter, then these prepositions must be used in the searched word.

Quests for the house quest
Choose an interesting topic for the game. All tasks can be united by one theme - it could be a space adventure, a spy mission, a search for a superhero. When preparing cards with tasks, it is worth reflecting this - decorate them with images of characters from the chosen film or fairy tale, add suitable quotes from the cartoon to riddles and parting words to the players.
To conduct quests yourself, you can choose the following topics:
- School of Superheroes - in the process of passing, participants prove that they have “superpowers”. Tasks can be for strength, endurance, agility, etc.
- Only experienced detectives can investigate the case of the theft of a birthday cake.
- The search for Queen Elsa or Princess Rapunzel - the gift includes a doll of the same name.
- A virus has infected the computer; a group of guests must save important files from damage.
- An expedition to a planet with an interesting name, in which you can encrypt an event that is interesting to the players present or the name of the hero of the occasion. After successful completion, participants become astronauts, undergo an initiation ceremony and receive small souvenirs.
The main advantage of a thematic quest is the convenience of including active tasks. This could be throwing paper balls at a target, playing with a ball, “extra chair”, limbo, etc. Include puzzles, crosswords, charades, and anagrams. You can do audio tasks - the hint text is recorded on a voice recorder. Photo riddles are interesting - take a photo of the same place in the house where the clue is hidden from different angles. The location of the next clue can also be encrypted as an anagram.
The most diverse type of quest tasks are encrypted messages. You can prepare puzzles on the topic chosen for the game, simple puzzles, and it will be convenient for kids to search for animals in a picture where their images are mixed up.

- Construction of a hut from chairs and sofa cushions according to a pre-prepared scheme.
- Whether preparing sandwiches for a holiday table or assembling canapés, food must be prepared in advance.
