Portal about modern mobile and wireless communication technologies

At the end of the 19th century, Russian physicist Popov invented the world's first wireless system for exchanging radio signals. He presented his invention at a meeting of the Russian Physicochemical Society. And since 1925, on the day of this meeting, namely May 7, Radio Day began to be celebrated.

The advent of radio was perceived as a miracle. Nowadays, not a single person can live without mobile communications and television. Engineers, scientists, and technical workers take part in the creation and improvement of this industry. Today is a reason to congratulate them on World Radio Day and show our gratitude for their work.

history of the holiday

The holiday was first held in the USSR in 1925. The resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR dated May 4, 1945 established the annual Radio Day on May 7. Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 1, 1980 No. 3018-X “On holidays and memorable days” renamed it Radio Day, a holiday for workers in all communications sectors. The holiday is not provided for in the legislation of the Russian Federation, but it continues to be celebrated in Russia according to Soviet traditions.

The date of Radio Day is dedicated to the demonstration of the world's first radio receiver in action. On May 7, 1895, Russian physicist Alexander Popov carried out the first radio communication session. He transmitted the message using Morse code.

Interesting Facts

  • In 2008, the Russian comedy film “Radio Day” was released based on the play of the same name.
  • The world's first radio message was transmitted by A. Popov on March 24 (March 12, old style) 1896 at a distance of 250 m. The text consisted of two words - “Heinrich Hertz.”
  • The first Internet radio appeared in 1993. It was called InternetTalkRadio.
  • Radio saved the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was built for the 1889 World's Fair and was planned to be removed after 20 years. After the advent of radio, antennas began to be installed on the tower. Thanks to this, it was not demolished.
  • There are shortwave radio stations in the world that broadcast encrypted messages in the form of a set of numbers, letters or words. They are read out by a distorted announcer's voice or a computer voice. The ownership and purpose of these stations is unknown. They are attributed to intelligence services, spies, drug mafias and other secret organizations.

Popov or Marconi?

The first area of application of these inventions was the Russian Navy. At first, with the help of Popov and Rybkin’s instruments, they detected the approach of thunderstorms and storms - and quite successfully. And in 1902, on the Black Sea, Popov managed to establish radio communications between coastal services, lighthouses and ships in the coastal zone from Odessa to Sevastopol.

Popov made no secret of his invention and even published its description. And about a year later, the Italian inventor Marquis Guglielmo Marconi filed a patent application for a very similar device. Plagiarism or simultaneous insight? In the history of science it often happens both. Marconi was a talented radio engineer and, importantly, knew how to attract patrons to his experiments.

It was he who, in November 1897, built and equipped the world's first stationary radio station - off the British coast, on the Isle of Wight in the English Channel. Of course, this is also a major and spectacular historical event, and Marconi’s merits cannot be underestimated. But, in essence, the establishment of a radio station on the Isle of Wight is associated with the modernization of Popov’s invention.

During the First World War, the technical foundations were created for the first radio broadcasts to a wide audience. This industry developed surprisingly quickly: by the early 1930s, a whole galaxy of radio professionals, real artists in their field, had appeared.

Collapse of the tower: why engineer Shukhov was “conditionally shot”

Domestic television began in a former orphanage

The first radio broadcasts in our country came from the Nizhny Novgorod laboratory in the “unforgettable 1919”. Regular radio broadcasting began in the summer of 1921. A year later, the Shukhov radio tower appeared in Moscow. Broadcasts from it went over 10 thousand km. As newspapers reported, in this sense our Shabolovka was more powerful than the Paris Eiffel Tower, which had housed radio stations since 1906.

At the beginning of September 1922, the first radio concert was given in Moscow with the participation of artists from the Bolshoi Theater and the best conservatory musicians. Everyone became aware of the “disciplining” words of the announcers: “Attention! Moscow speaks! On November 7, 1925, the first live radio report about the festive parade from Red Square was made - taking into account a foreign audience, in four languages at once. In those cities and towns of the country where radio broadcasting had not yet arrived, rallies were held with banners “Give me radio!” It was considered the second “Soviet miracle” after Ilyich’s light bulb.

We also remembered about May 7, about Popov’s first experience. The holiday was established 95 years ago, when it was widely celebrated in the Soviet Union. Renouncing the old world, the new government never denied Popov's merits. In those days he was rightly called a Russian genius, a progressive scientist and a great inventor. Radio broadcasting gained momentum and became the most important “collective agitator” and educator. From the loudspeaker people learned about reforms and repressions, about victories and defeats, about the beginning of wars and great construction projects.

In the Soviet Union, streets and villages were named after the radio - and this surprised no one. The fact is that radio helped the Soviet government solve its main tasks. Firstly, radio united the country into a single centralized organism. For this, an announcer’s voice was simply needed, sounding “from Moscow to the very outskirts.” Secondly, it was the most effective educational tool. It was radio that taught millions of people the basics of the Russian literary language. “Theater at the Microphone” taught our grandparents to the Russian literary language in the Maly and Khudozhestvenny versions. Thirdly, this is propaganda. In every sense of this compromised but necessary concept.

From the Soviet Information Bureau

Loudspeakers on the streets have become a symbol of the times. All major projects of the Soviet government would hardly have been possible without these black plates. From there, both superior directives and symphonic music were heard. Propaganda was combined with education. This is how the pre-war generation was brought up - perhaps the most “radio-friendly” in our history. The generation that became the front line.

What were the voices of Yuri Levitan and Olga Vysotskaya for the country? And for besieged Leningrad - Mikhail Melaneda and Olga Berggolts? How they were waited for, how they listened... If it weren’t for this “friend’s voice” from the loudspeaker, the fate of hundreds of thousands of Leningraders would have been even worse. In those years, radio saved lives, made people believe in the most hungry days, and gave them strength not to give up... People knew their intonations in nuances. The slightest changes in mood were detected.

Yuri Levitan, 1941

Photo: TASS/Fedor Kislov

During the war days, Yuri Levitan reported almost daily reports from the Sovinformburo and orders from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. His low baritone sounded sometimes mournful, sometimes solemn, but he was always the voice of a power that would win, in which one could not help but believe. And it is no coincidence that Adolf Hitler considered him his personal enemy: in the first years of the war, Levitan most convincingly showed millions of people that the country was not broken. And then he became a harbinger of victorious fireworks and the Victory itself, which he announced with warmth and irrepressible triumph.
