Places of power of the 90s era: where the youth of that time had fun

We all feel nostalgic for our school years. Many of those who studied in the 90s most miss the discos that took place in the foyers of schools, canteens of educational institutions or cultural centers. We grew up under the fiery rhythms of modern songs and vivid images of artists, enjoying the spirit of freedom and change. Now, almost 25 years later, I meet with my school friends, and we often reminisce about past discos, each time surprised at how tenaciously our memory retains vivid images of those years.

Motley composition of the dance floor

If at school we were all clearly ranked and could not express our individuality in behavior and clothing, then at the disco we had a blast. The trends of “wild capitalism” were clearly visible in the clothes. The cool ones wore leather jackets, the jocks wore tracksuits, and even the nerds stood out with their elegance, wearing colorful ties around their skinny necks. The girls were strictly dressed in leggings, colored jackets and blouses and voluminous hairstyles on their heads, which were often hidden by a hat made of honor. And, of course, jeans were always present at discos, in large quantities and in various forms. There were punks, hippies, goths and representatives of other youth subcultures among us. No one persecuted us anymore, as in the eighties, because of the wrong hairstyle or the presence of camouflage pants of a US Army soldier. The adults only silently watched us twitch to the music and informal communication, which sometimes ended in a brawl. But serious fights at the disco rarely happened.

Disco music of the 90s

In an era before the Internet and social networks, an artist could make it to the top of the musical Olympus with exceptional vocal abilities or mastery of a musical instrument. And since in the nineties, along with democracy, economic problems came to Russia, in order to become a famous performer or group, it was necessary to have a producer or use your own money for promotion. Many vocal groups of those years were stamped as if they were carbon copies. But among them there were really worthy groups, which are still popular today.

By the beginning of the 90s, as far as I remember, such rock bands as “Agatha Christie”, which took the grand prix of a music festival in France, “Alice”, which raised rockers to a completely new level of performance, had already formed and were seriously promoted, and “Bravo” with the extravagant Zhanna Aguzarova. This list can be continued with such rock bands as:

  1. St. Petersburg "Spleen", founded in 1994;
  2. Sverdlovsk “Meaning Hallucinations”, which combined guitar music with electronic music;
  3. Far Eastern "Mumiy Troll", founded in the early 80s, but gained all-Union fame only with the advent of the nineties;
  4. "Gaza Strip" with their obscene songs.

I also remember such vocal ensembles, forgotten today, as “Nancy” with their hit “Smoke of Menthol Cigarettes”, “Commissar” with brutal boys and “Car Man”, with its revolutionary dance moves. But not everything went into existence. The youth of the 2000s, just like us, enjoy listening to the catchy songs of the group “Hands Up”, the lyrical compositions of “Ivanushek International”, and the hooligan lyrics of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”. And how many purely female groups emerged in those years! Bright, distinctive and original. Long-legged beauties often quickly soared very high in the TOP of the hit parades, but just as quickly the stars faded, forgotten by their daddy-producers. Until now, I enjoy listening to disco music, which was given to us by VIA “Combination”, Blestyashchie”, “Lyceum”, “Strelki”.

What did “real boys” prefer to listen to?

Today, many nightclubs and dance floors still successfully use the developments of school discos of the 90s. Thirty years ago we were not spoiled by good dance music and enjoyed listening and dancing to tracks with not entirely adequate lyrics. And what can we say about foreign music! We didn’t understand the words at all, but we appreciated them for their melody, energy and unusual combination of the performers’ voices and the sound of musical instruments. At discos, the tone was usually set by real boys, whose cool was torn jeans and leather jackets. Usually, for the warm-up, we ordered “Folk Techno” or “They hit us in the face with a teapot.” And only after adrenaline began to enter the blood in massive doses, the brothers approached the DJ one by one and whispered the names of popular foreign rock bands in his ear, thereby demonstrating their closeness to the golden youth. With this kind of music you can approach any girl and invite her to dance. Of the entire galaxy of foreign performers of those years, I still have reels of magnetic tapes of disco stars of the 90s:

  • Scooter. My favorite composition is “Move Your Ass”, which combines a dance demon and an arrangement that was fashionable at the time with elements of hard rock;
  • Mr President. Remixes of this artist can still be heard today. For example, the song “Coco Jamboo” was very popular then and today. Modern boys especially love to listen to it with a glass of good beer;
  • Maxx. This group, fashionable in the 90s, gave us two super hits that were at the top of the charts for a very long time. The compositions “Get-a-Way” and “No More” literally blew up the dance floor of the assembly hall or school cafeteria;
  • Snap. Well, which schoolchildren of the late 20th century did not hear the killer song of the dance terminators “Rhythm is a Dancer”?
  • Ace of Base. Oh yeah! All the high school boys and girls especially appreciated this group's "All That She Wants" lyric video;
  • E-Rotic. Their trendy composition “Max Dont Have Sex With Your Ex” still sounds quite good. And I would still be happy to watch an erotic video from that time;
  • Dr. Alban and his perfect track “Its My Life” can be listened to endlessly and give free rein to the movements at any disco.

And although nothing lasts forever, we will listen to all of the above groups for many more decades.

A little about eternal music

Music from the nineties of the last century still remains popular in the 2000s. What is the secret of these timeless compositions? To understand such success, you need to go back to those years. In the first half of the 90s, musicians had not yet competed to see who was cooler and who earned more from their concerts. The music and lyrics were written from the heart, taking as a basis the best world hits that became available after the Iron Curtain was lifted from the USSR. Therefore, they often produced good melodies, sometimes even absurd in their meaning. Their mass was so great that even according to the theory of probability, real hits, bright, sexy and memorable, could definitely be identified from the total number. Music gave birth to talents, and talents gave birth to music. The artists sought to realize themselves in creativity, and not to earn money. This is probably the reason that their best creations will be heard for a very long time. What do you think? Why is 90s disco so loved by people of different age groups?

Places of power of the 90s era: where the youth of that time had fun

Now we have fun in “Simach”, “Mutabor”, “Rainbow” and “Gazgolder”, and 30 years ago young people had their own places of power. The era of the 90s is imbued with the spirit of freedom, adventurism and unbridled fun. It was then that the first parties appeared in our familiar form. We talk about the most popular clubs of that time.

"Ptyuch-club"

The legendary club opened in 1994 and existed for three years. Initially it was not planned as a techno dance club, but it became just that. The founder of Ptyuch, Alexander Golubev, once said: “Our idea was that we need to somehow move away from the constant parties from our parents’ apartment.” Indeed, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, apartment buildings (modern registrations) were extremely popular, but there were no clubs as such. The most fashionable young people hung out at Ptyuch: DJs, artists, musicians. This was probably the only place where, during the era of bandits and gangsters, exclusively the intelligentsia gathered.

"Gagarin party"

Under the loud name “Gagarin Party” hides an equally loud phenomenon of the 90s era. We are talking about the first rave in the history of our country, it was held in December 1991 in the pavilion at VDNKh, and Artemy Troitsky announced it to the whole country on the federal channel. After him, the entire underground culture of parties and electronic music came out to the masses. The rave was organized by artists and musicians from St. Petersburg. By the way, subsequently one of the organizers of the Gagarin Party, Oleg Tsodikov, became the founder of one of the legendary clubs of the Titanic era.

"Titanic"

As we have already said, Titanic is a legendary club of the 90s era. It opened on April 1, 1995, not far from the Dynamo metro station and became a kind of personification of the underground culture of the 90s. True, entry there cost as much as 50 dollars (a lot of money in those days). Themed parties were held there, which were the center of attraction for all the inhabitants of Moscow at night. One of these parties was called “Kill Versace”, it was organized nine months before the real murder of the fashion designer. And the point is not at all that the organizers wanted to kill Gianni; at that time, new Russians with poor taste were dressing in the Versace brand. And the party was designed to fight for good taste.

"Blizzard"

Another place of power for all partygoers of the 90s. "Metelitsa" is a club and casino on Novy Arbat. It opened in 1993 and existed until 2009. If all the previous places were visited by representatives of underground youth, then the regulars of “Broom” were the owners of crimson jackets and massive chains (in simple words - bandits). In the early years, entrance to the casino cost $20 (which was a lot at that time).

Disco at "LISS"

In 1992, senator and statesman Sergei Lisovsky created one of the most popular discos of that time, “U LISS”. By the way, the first erotic shows appeared there. And in 1993, the leader of the Baumanskaya organized crime group, Valery Dlugach, nicknamed Globus, was killed in this establishment. It was such a hectic time!

"Territory"

The “Territory” club opened in 1996 and existed right up until 2003. It was located in the basement of the Theater. Ermolova. Parties, rock concerts and press conferences took place here. “We just wanted to open a place where we would all feel comfortable and good,” says Territory co-owner Andrei Kurchenko.

Address: Tverskaya, 5/6

"Hermitage Museum"

Archive photo of the Hermitage club
The Hermitage was probably the most bohemian club of that time. It was opened by artist Sveta Vickers in 1992. People from all walks of life gathered there: from the cultural intelligentsia to bandits, from freaks to bikers. The founder of the Hermitage said: “The concept of the place was the absence of a concept: they played any music, everyone was allowed in - both in sneakers and barefoot.” The first Hermitage lasted one summer, but became so popular that The New York Times wrote about it. And then the club moved to the building of the Rusalka restaurant.
