Where to celebrate New Year in Moscow

How you celebrate the New Year is how you will spend it. There is something in this sign, so we will meet to experience the most vivid, most unusual impressions. It often happens that it is better to choose a ready-made solution, and on this page I tried to collect as many interesting options for celebrating the New Year in Moscow on a turnkey basis:

  • celebrate the New Year on the Moscow River (bonus - VIP viewing of the New Year's fireworks)
  • celebrate the New Year on the highest observation deck (the bonus is not only a gorgeous panorama of the night capital, but also the opportunity to see the maxims of New Year's fireworks at different points).
  • night club/cafe/restaurant.
  • celebrate the New Year on Red Square.
  • celebrate the New Year in one of the Moscow parks.

Now let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of each of these options.

New on a ship on the Moscow River

As always, fireworks will be launched in the new year 2022 in places that are clearly visible from the Moscow River, and therefore it is very convenient (prudent and original) to celebrate the New Year on board a pleasure boat. The entertainment program starts at 21.00, the menu can be chosen to suit every taste, as well as the ship and the range of services. And watching the New Year's fireworks from the water is top class: no one will interfere with watching and filming, and you can quickly retreat to a warm restaurant hall!

Attention, tickets to celebrate such an original New Year are selling like hot cakes, so you need to book in advance: the ships are not rubber!

Celebrating the New Year on the water will take place in different locations and with a different range of services from an economical option to VIP with ALL Inclusive. Choose your option, and one of the selection factors will be the location of the ship and viewing of the fireworks:

  • opposite the Kremlin. Find out details

New Year on Red Square in Moscow

Festive festivities are held on Red Square every year (the only exception was last year (due to the pandemic they were not held), and this year they will begin at 22.00 on December 31 and end at 2.00 on January 1, 2022.

You can usually see in the square

  • congratulations to Father Frost and Snow Maiden,
  • New Year's concert,
  • Laser show.

All New Year's holidays are open on the square

  • New Year's fair,
  • attractions,
  • skating rink next to GUM.

All this works on New Year's Eve. There are three ways to get to Red Square:

  • by invitation cards,
  • on a first-come, first-served basis (in which you can stand for several hours),
  • by purchasing a ticket to the skating rink from GUM.

The only place that everyone is guaranteed to get to is the skating rink next to GUM. By the way, it is better to buy tickets there in advance (usually they are already on sale in late November - early December), because the skating rink is not rubber, and there are too many people who want to listen to the chimes.

Tickets to the skating rink near GUM this New Year's Eve will cost 2,022 rubles: every year they rise in price by a ruble, that is, they cost exactly the same as the numbers in the New Year. Sometimes this becomes the only easy way to get to Red Square on New Year's Day.

If you were unable to get to Red Square, go to any place you like next to it, from where you can see the Spasskaya Tower (look at the map below):

  • Manezhnaya Square,
  • Sofia Embankment (from here, by the way, it will be convenient to watch the fireworks, but more on that below),
  • Zaryadye Park,
  • streets leading to the square - Ilyinka, Nikolskaya

How to get to Red Square on New Year's Eve

The only acceptable means of transportation around New Year's Moscow is the metro. Ground and personal transport will not help you: Moscow is blocked. And the metro operates all night from December 31 to January 1. On the night of January 6–7 (Christmas), the metro is open until 2 am.

Christmas markets

Christmas tree and Christmas market in the center of GUM near the fountain / photo by A. Patrikeeva, December 2019

In the 2020-2021 season, the Journey to Christmas festival and Christmas markets will not be held due to the epidemiological situation.

Moscow seasons are the transformation of the city as the seasons change, which has already become a tradition. Every three months, the capital changes its outfits and opens themed areas for its residents and guests.

“Journey to Christmas” is the name of the festival, which starts in Moscow in December.

there are 81 festive venues in Moscow in the 2020/2021 season

Beautiful decorations, tents with unusual crafts and souvenirs from 50 regions of the country and from other countries, interesting events and a cheerful mood - all this greets visitors at the festival, which lasts until mid-January.

The largest venues are traditionally located in the city center - on Red, Tverskaya, Manezhnaya squares and on Revolution Square. Entrance to the territory is absolutely free.

If you go to the central fairs, be sure to stop by GUM . Its decoration is done by real professionals. Every year it surprises visitors with new ideas and unique decorations. Well, and of course, don’t forget to try the branded Gumov ice cream there.

The program of the Journey to Christmas festival is very diverse. This will be of interest to everyone:

  • For those who have not yet had time to buy gifts, there are souvenir shops. This year, Christmas gifts and sweet treats from Europe await you at the transition from Manezhnaya Square to Revolution Square.
  • , a snowboarding hill is open on Novy Arbat . Children aged 7 years and older can ride for free and take master classes from snowboarding stars. A children's snowboard park is open on the same site - for children from 3 years old.
  • Theatergoers will appreciate the productions and concerts that will be held at a variety of venues.
  • A huge number of master classes will attract those who love development. The topics are varied: from culinary courses to acting.
  • Ice shows staged by Evgeni Plushenko will be held at the open-air skating rink near Revolution Square .
  • Zaryadye Park will host free concerts of popular bands: Brainstorm, Zdob si Zdub, Mgzavrebi, etc.
  • Those who just want to have fun can ride the slides, skating rinks or play a quest.

Most events are free, others require a ticket. Sometimes you should sign up for the chosen entertainment in advance, since there are a lot of people who want to participate. You can find the addresses and posters of events on the official website of the Moscow Mayor.

New Year in Moscow parks: public events

In addition to Red Square, there are many popular places in Moscow where celebrating the New Year will also be pleasant, spectacular and interesting:

  • Zaryadye Park
  • Gorky Park
  • Hermitage Garden
  • VDNH
  • Sparrow Hills
  • Sokolniki Park"
  • Izmailovsky Park
  • Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill
  • Kuzminki-Lublino Park
  • Tagansky Park
  • Arbat
  • Tverskaya.

All these places are united by the fact that New Year's festivities take place here, there are skating rinks, ice slides, and they usually host performances by artists and the launch of New Year's fireworks (more on this below).

Moreover, it is a mistake to believe that you can come here only on New Year’s Eve; during the day there are also many New Year’s events, the poster is full of surprises.

You can come here on any day of the New Year holidays: from 10.00 on December 31 to January 9, the New Year's poster will delight you with variety.

The streets of Arbat, Kuznetsky Most and Tverskaya stand apart here. There will be no fireworks here (as well as an ice skating rink), but there will be fun festivities. And Tverskaya is generally becoming pedestrian, and therefore walking along it will be a real pleasure.

Where should guests of the New Year's Capital go?

It is no coincidence that the New Year is considered a time of miracles. At this time, it is worth opening your heart to the beautiful, bright, eternal and enjoying the opportunities that Moscow opens. If the first day of the new year begins tomorrow, you still don’t know what to do, catch a short digest from us for guests of the New Year’s city with a population of one million.

VDNH

Incredible beauty everywhere - illumination, decoration of fountains, buildings, benches - everything! Here it is, that same New Year's fairy tale that everyone dreams of going to. You can spend the whole day at VDNKh and not be bored for a moment, as there are many interesting objects and the most beautiful nature of the park area. Finally, let's not forget that the above-mentioned largest open-air skating rink in the Russian Federation is located here.

Victory Museum

We always recommend visiting the Victory Museum, but, alas, it will not accept guests during the 2021-2022 holidays. However, you can plan to visit it a little later.

Moscow Kremlin and Red Square

Red Square is the main attraction of the capital and the most visited place. You will definitely see a decorated Christmas tree, an ice skating rink and delicious treats. There will be no mass celebrations this year, but guests and residents of the city will be able to enjoy the New Year’s fireworks, and during the day you can take a walk in a beautiful place with your beloved family members and friends.

Moscow Planetarium

This year the planetarium is hosting a space show for children, Mission Canopus. You can go on a journey with a brave boy Kolya and a robot named Tari across the Galaxy on board the Canopus 2022 ship. You have to find Grandpa Paul, visit different planets and learn many fascinating facts about our Solar System and discover the secrets of the constellations.

The show is unique in its kind, as it represents the integration of acting and dynamic visuals on the dome of the Great Star Hall. Thanks to advanced visualization tools, you will personally touch the Cosmos between December 18 and January 9, 2022.

Izmailovo Kremlin

When planning your New Year's adventure, be sure to visit the Izmailovo Kremlin, which is part of pre-Petrine Moscow. You will get wonderful photos with the palace in the background, which is very reminiscent of a gingerbread house.

You can send a letter to the Moscow estate of Father Frost in the parks

From November 18, 2021, Santa Claus' New Year's mail began working. This event is taking place for the fourth time. Until January 21, 2022, you can write and send a letter to Santa Claus. By the end of winter, New Year's grandfather will send a response to all letters where the return address was indicated. In order for the addressee to receive the letter, you must indicate on the envelope your name, return address with postal code and the recipient to whom the letter is intended (Santa Claus). You can also put a drawing, a New Year's card with congratulations or poems in the envelope.

The postal snowman will deliver all messages to the Moscow estate of Father Frost on a special bus. The Winter Wizard will answer all letters with the specified return address. He will send them before the end of winter.

In addition, you can write a letter to Santa Claus without leaving your home. He got his email last year and aroused great interest among children and their parents. Anyone who wants to send a message online needs to fill out a special form on the website of the grandfather’s Moscow estate: write the text, attach a file with a drawing (optional) and indicate your email address for feedback.

The answer will come within two to three days from the email address: [email protected] It is worth adding it to your contact database in advance so that the letter does not end up in the Spam folder.

You can also send a letter by regular mail. On the envelope you must indicate the recipient's address: 109472, Moscow, Kuzminsky Forest, Volgogradsky Avenue, property 168d, Grandfather Frost. It is also important to remember to write your name and return address with zip code.

Santa Claus reads all the letters very carefully, and also loves to look at children's drawings and is happy when the children write poems to him.

Moscow skating rinks

GUM Skating Rink on Red Square

Skating rinks in Moscow have been open since December 7, 2021 and will remain open through the New Year holidays.

To enter the skating rink, you must register on the website and through the Moscow Seasons application. You can only be in the locker rooms wearing a mask and gloves.

Moscow skating rinks have long won the hearts of residents and guests of the capital. Every year, both adults and children look forward to their opening. It is worth paying tribute to the organizers: the ice rinks are really becoming more beautiful and better every time. There are paid and free skating rinks available to everyone. In total, about 1,500 sites are open in the capital.

The largest skating rinks in Moscow:

  1. Ice skating rink in Gorky Park . Every year the park is decorated in a special style. In the 2019-2020 season, the pavilions in Gorky Park are decorated in a space-star style, and the skating rink is called “Voskhod”. Sessions are held twice a day - from 10:00 to 15:00 and from 17:00 to 24:00 . Ticket price in the morning is 600 rubles , in the evening – 800 rubles .
  2. Skating rinks at VDNKh . The skating rink is divided into 3 zones, including a separate children's skating area. During the holidays, 4 sessions are held every day from 10:00 to 23:00 . Tickets cost from 350 to 650 rubles . for adults and 150-300 rubles . for children. The skating rinks have artificial turf.
  3. GUM skating rink. Although this ice rink is not very large, it is located right next to the walls of the Kremlin. Each session lasts 1 hour. Entrance ticket price for an adult: from 500 rubles , for a child - 300 rubles .
  4. Ice skating rink in Sokolniki Park . Open from 9:00 to 24:00 . Price - 300 rub. (weekdays), 400 rub. (weekend). This year the “Countries of the World” festival is taking place at the skating rink in Sokolniki. Open daily from 10:00 to 24:00.

It's best to check the skating rink's schedule before visiting because many rinks have closed events and may limit access for visitors. For example, ice shows are held at the GUM skating rink on holidays (see the schedule on the website); training and open master classes with famous figure skaters and hockey players can be held at other venues.

Rental of skates and additional equipment is paid separately. There are cafes at the skating rinks where you can buy hot drinks and snacks. Almost everywhere you can pay by card.

Ice slide rides during New Year's Eve 2022

In 2022, don’t forget to prepare sleighs, ice skates and tubing for all family members to fly into the New Year. Choose any place where you can completely and completely devote yourself to your favorite pastimes since childhood (making snowmen, playing snowballs, riding cheesecakes):

  • Hills in Krylatskoye. Among the TOP and most popular among visitors are the slide in the Skazka park and the ice “track” Lata Track.
  • Sports complex "Kant" with an equipped tubing track in a safe closed area. At your disposal are 5 simple straight tracks with a length of 50 m and one for lovers of extreme sports with turns and bends with a length of 60 m.
  • Hill in Kolomenskoye. It's open all winter season, so even January 1st will be fun if you want it to be.
  • Parks also create slides, and Patriot is a prime example of this! A tubing hill is waiting for you to visit, and for children of primary school and preschool age, a slide has been erected with a TV on which their favorite cartoon films are shown.
  • Krasnaya Presnya and its extreme slide, which offers stunning views of Moscow City.
  • In Izmailovsky Park on New Year's Eve, a complex of slides in a wooden frame opens for greater operational safety.
  • Free “Miracle Hill” in Vorontsovsky Park. Visitors can go tubing, cheesecake and ice-skating at any time.
  • The ice slide on Revolution Square is quite rightly one of the largest in the city center, since the length of the slope is about 100 m.

Ice slides are the best advertisement for the New Year, they bring so much joy, laughter and fun. Even if all fairs and festivals are cancelled, Muscovites and guests of the hero city will have a wonderful place to meet a new stage of life with family and friends riding on an ice floe.

What to do in Moscow for the New Year. Walking route

New Year in Moscow is not only New Year's Eve. Every day there is a feeling of celebration on the streets of the capital. New Year's illumination changes even familiar places beyond recognition, and what can we say about the New Year's mood - you don't even need to create it!

In 2021-2022, light arches will be installed in the following Moscow squares and gardens:

  • on Pushkinskaya Square,
  • on Tverskaya Square,
  • on Manezhnaya Square,
  • in Novopushkinsky park
  • in Kamergersky Lane.

Light tunnels will traditionally appear on the Boulevard Ring. On Poklonnaya Hill there is a huge New Year's ball weighing 35 tons and 20 meters high, at the Triumphal Arch there are light figures of Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. At VDNKh and Gorky Park there are bright light decorations at the central entrances and throughout the territory. In 2021, the improvement of the park near the Northern River Station was completed. Its territory will also be decorated in New Year's style. Among the new products this year is the design of the future Yauza Park: six New Year trees, animal figures, light arches, balls and stars will be installed on the section from the Rostokinsky Aqueduct to Severodvinskaya Street.

However, there are thematic excursions where a professional guide will not only take you around the most photogenic locations of the capital (for the coolest Insta photos), but will also tell you about the history of the New Year. A bonus is, of course, places where it is customary to make wishes for the whole year in advance (and so that they certainly come true!). Find out details

Open museums and exhibitions

We would like to remind you that during the New Year holidays, if you want to visit exhibitions or museums, you will have to be patient, because due to the spread of Coronavirus, from mid-November until January 15, these institutions will not work in order to stop the % of COVID cases in the capital and countrywide.

January 15th is just around the corner, so be sure to put plans to go to:

  • The Fashion Museum in Moscow - it turns out that it has such a rich history.
  • Museum of Heroes of the Soviet Union and Russia - let children know their heroes by sight.
  • The architectural complex “Provision Stores” will appeal to connoisseurs of Empire style architecture.
  • Museum of Archeology on Manezhnaya Square - incredible finds and discoveries await you.
  • The museum and park complex “Northern Tushino”, where the Museum of the History of the Navy, popular among Muscovites and guests of the city, is located.
  • Be sure to visit the legendary museum of estate culture “Estate of the Princes Golitsyn Vlakhernskoye-Kuzminki”. This is the same former estate of the Golitsyn princes, and its buildings are located on both banks of the Ponomarka River (today it is called Churilikha).
  • Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics: starry expanses await you!
  • State Museum of V.V. Mayakovsky will help you get acquainted with the ambiguous and contradictory personality of the poet.

Pushkin, M.A. Museum Bulgakov, where, as they say, mysterious things happen, a museum of naive art, which will show that beauty can be very different. Also consider visiting the K.G. Literary Museum. Paustovsky, State Museum named after. S.A. Yesenin and the Museum of Modern Art. This is a unique and affordable chance (many museums invite you to visit completely free of charge for the benefit of the development of Russian culture) to become closely acquainted with your native history and culture.

There are a lot of excursions: both playful for children and quite intelligent adults. A large selection of where to go for the New Year from Moscow is here .

The most obvious thing is to go to the residence of Santa Claus. And now we are not talking about the Moscow residence, but about Veliky Ustyug.

  • New Year trees in Moscow. Poster

In Moscow there is always something to do with a child, especially on New Year’s, when in addition to local and permanent entertainment: circuses, theaters, museums, a zoo, etc. — All kinds of New Year trees are offered to your attention. I’ll tell you in detail where to celebrate the New Year with children in Moscow.

The sale of tickets for the New Year trees has already started. The number of events, as always, is incredibly large, but there is also a rush for tickets, so it is better to buy them in advance: closer to the New Year, the choice will no longer be so large.

All children's Christmas trees are divided primarily by age, so here are some tips for choosing a New Year's holiday:

    • pay attention to the duration of the New Year tree : for the little ones, the performance should not be too long so that the child does not get tired.
    • choose the genre of the New Year's performance for children : you want a theatrical production on a New Year's theme or a New Year's show (they used to say sideshow).
    • decide on the location . To begin with, do you want an intimate celebration in a small room or a huge space with a lot of people? Do you want a traditional Christmas tree with a performance, or, for example, something different - in an aquarium, a circus, and for teenagers they already hold New Year's holidays in clubs and restaurants!
