Music Day is celebrated annually on October 1 . The holiday was invented by Dmitry Shostakovich: the composer sent a letter to the UN in which he proposed creating a similar celebration. He believed that Music Day would help unite representatives of different cultures.

In 1973, the International Music Council of UNESCO officially established the holiday. They started celebrating it two years later. In Russia, International Music Day officially began to be celebrated in 1996, when it was the 90th anniversary of the birth of Dmitry Shostakovich.

history of the holiday

One of those to whom modernity owes the existence of this international date is a citizen of the USSR, Russian composer, pianist and famous public figure D.D. Shostakovich. The most famous musician of the last century and doctor of art history in the late 40s. became a political exile, was deprived of the title of professor at the Moscow and Leningrad Conservatories and dismissed from there. His “vacation” lasted more than 10 years, but already in 1955 Shostakovich’s career was restored, and a new creative upsurge began. The musical legacy he left behind is performed in various countries. Like many of the world's classic masterpieces, it has received a new direction in modern popular rock processing.

Probably, any medieval festival or carnival, like palace balls, can be confidently attributed to the prerequisites for the emergence of the holiday, if not to the event itself.

International Music Day

International Music Day

(International Music Day), celebrated annually on October 1 since 1975, was established on the initiative of the International Music Council (IMC) of UNESCO two years earlier at the 15th General Assembly of the IMC in Lausanne.

One of the initiators of the establishment of International Music Day was the composer Dmitry Shostakovich and the chairman of the International Music Council, Yehudi Menuhin.

The holiday is celebrated annually all over the world with large concert programs, with the participation of the best artists and artistic groups. On this day, compositions included in the treasury of world culture are heard. Creative meetings with composers, performers, musicologists are also held, thematic exhibitions and educational events are organized, which contributes to the goal of disseminating music as an art in a variety of communities.

Music (from the Greek musike, literally “the art of muses”) is a type of art in which organized musical sounds serve as a means of embodying artistic images. Humanity has been familiar with music since ancient times. In the caves of Africa, rock paintings of long-vanished tribes have been preserved. The drawings depict people with musical instruments. We will never hear that music again, but once upon a time it brightened up people's lives, made them happy or sad.

In 2000, Chinese archaeologists discovered a museum of musical instruments created two thousand years ago, during the Han Dynasty.

Music has enormous power. There are few people in the world who are indifferent to music. Many composers tried to express the state of their soul through it. Their great names will always be pronounced with gratitude by their descendants. Music does not age; it will live as long as a person exists.

After all, music affects a person’s perception and fills him with emotions. It is not only the creative self-expression of composers, musicians and singers, but for centuries and millennia music has been an inseparable part of the cultural tradition, religious ritual and daily existence of every nation. And nowadays, fortunately, music has not lost its importance, but on the contrary, the need for it is increasing.

Free access to many musical works via the Internet, modern means of recording and playing music make it more accessible, new multimedia capabilities allow you to listen and watch musicians’ performances on more advanced media. All this helps to expand the knowledge of people (and especially the younger generation) about various cultural environments, layers, traditions where music is necessarily present.

Therefore, International Music Day also implements the idea of rapprochement and friendship between peoples, mutual enrichment of cultures, because the language of music is international and understandable to everyone who feels...

Interesting Facts

Music therapy has long been used by people to prevent and treat many diseases, relieve stress and as a cure for fatigue. And many modern mothers-to-be attend courses in musical preparation for childbirth and upcoming motherhood. According to scientists, this significantly reduces the risk of possible complications during childbirth and promotes the early development of babies.

It is gratifying that with all the diversity of genres, trends and trends, there is no displacement or substitution of concepts. The frightening forecast of skeptics that electronic music will “pull back” and kill real art, refutes the popularity of festivals and concerts with “live sound”.

Two words about history

The prehistoric period in the development of the art of music, according to scientists, ends in the 4th century BC. e., when songs first began to be recorded. The oldest record is considered to be a cuneiform tablet found during excavations of the Sumerian city of Nippur in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). The flute is recognized as the oldest musical instrument.

In Ancient Egypt, the art of music was of great importance because it was associated with the performance of religious hymns based on scenes from the life of the ancient gods. Thus, one of the most popular stories was the biography of the god Osiris, who died all the time and then was resurrected. Recorded texts were found on ancient papyri. The Egyptians used the flute and also the harp as instruments.

In Ancient Greece, art, including music, was very honorable. This was specially taught, and all educated Greeks could perform (sing or play a musical instrument) during the symposium - that’s what the feast was called in Ancient Greece. The Greeks played many instruments: wind, strings and percussion.

In literature and in images, the most common plucked instruments are the lyre and the cithara. The first, according to legend, was made by Hermes for Apollo and had up to 11 strings. The kithara was a narrow rectangular body with strings. Different thicknesses and tensions of the strings made it possible to produce different sounds.

People tried to record the music itself back in ancient times, but this was not the musical staff of today. Then they used either syllables or pictograms. With the development of music theory, prototypes of modern notes began to appear. And in its existing form, the staff of music appeared already in the 17th–18th centuries.

Celebration traditions

Music Day is, first of all, a holiday for people who play music professionally. That is, musicians, singers, composers, singing and music teachers, conservatory students and music school students. But, of course, it can be celebrated not only by those who decided to devote their lives to art, but also by people who simply love listening to and performing music.

Various events are celebrated on Music Day. On this day, music sounds everywhere: in concert halls, theaters, as well as on the streets and houses of ordinary people. On this day, parades of orchestras, street dance festivals, performances of professional and amateur groups can be organized.

The artists perform works of a wide variety of genres from classics to modern trends.

The younger generation is always involved in the festive events, because one of the main goals of the holiday is to teach children to love and appreciate good music. Therefore, on October 1, many schools and kindergartens host various events. Children are invited to attend concerts, artists come to visit them, various music competitions, festivals and holidays are held.

Large festive events are held in music schools and conservatories. Pupils and students not only organize performances and concerts, but also prepare funny skits, because this is a holiday, so it should be as fun as possible.
