Yaroslav the Wise as a fortress to protect the northeastern borders of Rus'. It was the first Christian city on the Volga. In 1238 it was plundered and burned by the Mongol-Tatars. In 1463, Yaroslavl became part of the Moscow state. The state treasury was transported here in case of danger.

During the struggle against the Polish-Lithuanian intervention, Yaroslavl became the capital of the state for several months. However, in the fall of 1608 the city was captured by the Poles and Lithuanians.

In 1692 it became the property of the reigning house. By the 18th century, Yaroslavl was second only to Moscow in terms of population, and second only to Moscow and Kazan in terms of trade turnover.

Under Peter I, the first manufactories were created in Yaroslavl. By the end of the 18th century, 70 industrial enterprises operated in the city. The first public theater in Russia appears in Yaroslavl. In 1796, Yaroslavl became the center of the province.

In 1870, a railway was built connecting Yaroslavl with Vologda, Kostroma, and St. Petersburg.

In 1936, the Yaroslavl region was formed. During the years of Soviet power, the city became a major center of mechanical engineering, chemical, oil refining and light industry.

The Yaroslavl City Hall has published the full program of City Day. The celebration will take place on Saturday, September 18th. About 60 sites will be involved.

“At the same time, we have excluded mass events from the program, which will allow us to avoid significant crowds of people in one place. We know that Yaroslavl residents come to this holiday with whole families and large groups, and it is very important for us that on this day everyone who comes shows consciousness and takes the necessary precautions,” said the mayor of Yaroslavl, Vladimir Volkov.

The main theme of the holiday will be the “Festival of Holiday Discovery”, the motto is the words “Discover the city in a new way”.

Traditionally, festive events dedicated to City Day take place on the last Saturday of May. However, it is possible that in 2022 the city’s anniversary will be celebrated in September, as it was last year. At the meeting at the mayor's office, a final decision had not yet been made, but it was noted that when making a decision, the opinion of citizens would definitely be taken into account. The concept and program of the holiday will depend on the choice of the date of the celebration.

The format in which the holiday is planned to be held has also not yet been determined and will depend on the current epidemiological situation on the date of the holiday and the necessary measures to prevent the spread of infection.

How is City Day celebrated in Yaroslavl?

In previous years, the celebrations began with the laying of flowers at the monument to Yaroslav the Wise. A concert program was prepared for residents and guests of the city with the participation of popular pop artists and the best creative groups of Yaroslavl.

Brass bands performed famous compositions. There were interesting master classes, quizzes, games and competitions, animation areas for children and attractions. At the exhibition-fair of folk arts and crafts, one could purchase products from local craftsmen.

Entertainment events in Yaroslavl for children and adults took place at several venues: on Sovetskaya Square, Pervomaisky Boulevard, the upper tier of the Volzhskaya Embankment, in the park on Andropov Street, in the park on Damansky Island, in the park near the monument to F. Volkov, in Victory Park, in the park 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl, etc.

Sports competitions were held at the Spartakovets stadium. Also on this day there were demonstration performances by athletes, athletics cross-country, the open championship and championship of the city of Yaroslavl in kayaking and canoeing, the International Sailing Regatta and other competitions.

Yaroslavl – history, sights, interesting facts

It is known that even during the Neolithic period Scandinavian and Slavic tribes lived in these places. In 1010, Yaroslav the Wise founded a fortress here - this date is generally considered to be the founding date of the city. In the Tale of Bygone Years it is first mentioned in a record for 1071.

During the period of feudal fragmentation, Yaroslavl became the capital city of the new principality, which, as stated in the chronicle, belonged to “Ugliche Pole, Mologa and the Zavolga countries to Lake Kubenskoye.”

In 1238, the city was captured by Mongol-Tatar troops. In 1380, Yaroslavl squads took part in the Battle of Kulikovo. In 1463, the Yaroslavl principality, having lost its independence, became part of the Moscow principality.

During the Time of Troubles, in 1609, Yaroslavl was devastated by Polish invaders, but the Transfiguration Monastery, which operated here, withstood the siege of the enemy. In 1612, the city became the temporary capital of the state. Here the forces of the second people's militia gathered under the leadership of Minin and Pozharsky, which set off to liberate Moscow.

Yaroslavl flourished in the second half of the 17th century. It became the second largest city in Russia in terms of population and third in terms of trade turnover. If in 1614 there were about 900 households here, then by the middle of the 17th century there were already 2 thousand; 15 thousand people lived in the city; at that time there were only more in Moscow.

Leather production was developed in Yaroslavl, metal and clay products, wool and linen fabrics were made.

The city was a major spiritual and cultural center: over the course of a century, 3 monasteries and 48 churches were built here, 35 of which were stone.

In 1750, the actor Fyodor Volkov opened the first Russian drama theater, which now bears his name. At the end of the century, one of the copies of the famous “Tale of Igor’s Campaign” was discovered in the library of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery.

At the beginning of the 18th century, by decree of Peter I, the Yaroslavl Big Manufactory was founded - one of the largest linen production facilities in the country. In the 19th century, 50 large factories operated in the city, employing more than 15 thousand people. In 1870, a railway to Moscow was built; in 1913 the first railway bridge across the Volga was built.

In 1936, the city became the administrative center of the Yaroslavl region. The Great Patriotic War accelerated the development of industry in Yaroslavl, where several defense enterprises operated, but constant bombing caused damage to the city. More than half a million residents of the Yaroslavl region went to the front; Over 200 thousand people died or went missing.

In the post-war years, Yaroslavl was restored, many new industrial enterprises were put into operation here, and new residential areas appeared. By the 1950s, the city was one of the twenty largest industrial cities of the Soviet Union.

Now Yaroslavl is a significant economic and cultural center of the region. There are enterprises in the mechanical engineering, energy generating, oil refining, chemical, and food industries here. The service sector and trade are developing. There are airports “Tunoshna” (international), “Levtsovo”, “Karachikha”.

The city has preserved many ancient buildings. In 2005, its historical center was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as an urban monument.

The largest city of the Golden Ring of Russia, Yaroslavl has been its official capital since 2016. Every year it is visited by 320 thousand tourists, including 150 thousand foreign ones. It is one of the most popular cultural tourism centers in our country; The tourism infrastructure here is well developed.

After the unification of several city museums into a single system in 1924, the Yaroslavl museum complex was formed, including several churches, thematic museums, a scientific library, and the Spassky Monastery. The general fund of the complex includes more than 350 thousand exhibits, including valuable icons and manuscripts, household items, and church utensils.

  • The building of the Drama Theater on Dramatcheskaya Square, near the monument to F. Volkov. It is one of the oldest public professional theaters in the world.
  • Monument to the founder of the city Yaroslav the Wise on Epiphany Square.
  • Volzhskaya embankment, along which there are mansions built in the 18th-19th centuries, and a park on Strelka, at the confluence of the Kotorosl and Volga rivers. On City Day, folk festivals will be held here and entertainment events will be organized.

The early history of Yaroslavl begins in the Neolithic period. Scandinavian and Slavic tribes were located on modern territory.

As a result, we decided to postpone the celebration to September of this year.
