Creators of paths and directions: features of the celebration of Road Workers Day

Wherever we go, our path, one way or another, inevitably runs along highways and highways connected by a single transport infrastructure. And from a global point of view, the road network is of considerable importance for any state - it is along it that goods are delivered and people make daily trips. The quality and ramification of road routes, and at the same time the speed, comfort and safety of vehicle movements, largely depend on the daily work activities of road workers. It is not for nothing that a special holiday is dedicated to them, which is celebrated every year at the state level on the third Sunday of October. In 2021, Road Workers' Day falls on October 17.

Road Workers Day in Russia

Professional holiday of road workers

, which is currently celebrated in Russia on the third Sunday in October, appeared in 1996.

Initially, on the basis of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 14, 1996, it was called the Day of Road Transport and Road Workers and was celebrated annually on the last Sunday of October. But in accordance with Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 556 of March 23, 2000 “On the Day of Road Workers,” this professional holiday was renamed and began to be celebrated annually on the third Sunday of October

.

The road sector represents one of the largest segments of the Russian public domain. The road sector includes over 3,000 institutions and enterprises of various forms of ownership. The number of workers in the road sector and related industries is about 750 thousand people.

Road Workers' Day is a holiday for those who build highways and bridges, who ensure the maintenance and operation of complex road infrastructure and reliable and safe road communications between regions of the country all year round. Roads are one of the most important elements of a state's infrastructure.

Without a road network, the articles of the Constitution of the Russian Federation cannot be implemented,

which guarantee the rights to freedom of movement of citizens, to the free movement of goods and services, and the unity of the economic space. Highways play an important role in solving social problems and implementing priority national projects. The economic prosperity and defense capability of the country directly depends on the degree of development of the road network.

In recent years, the revival of production and increased incomes of the population have led to a sharp increase in the fleet of vehicles, the volume of freight and passenger transportation by road. According to the provisions of the Transport Strategy of the Russian Federation, the development of the road network must correspond to the pace of socio-economic development of the country and meet transportation needs in accordance with the growth of motorization.

Due to the harsh climate and the presence of a large number of various natural obstacles (forests, mountains, wetlands), road construction in Russia has always been fraught with significant difficulties. But thanks to the dedicated work of road workers, a powerful road network has been created in the country. Hundreds of thousands of kilometers of roads, from local to highway, provide stable communications in many directions and transport accessibility to remote Russian territories. Every year, new highways and artificial structures are built that make the life of Russians more comfortable and safer.

For whom is the holiday established?

Road Workers' Day is celebrated by all professionals involved in the field of road construction and maintenance. Thus, builders, installers, engineers, electricians, designers, repairmen and other personnel, as well as production employees who specialize in the manufacture of materials, equipment and components for road construction, are involved in the holiday. And, of course, the holiday is considered “theirs” by friends and family members of road workers, who are always ready to morally support them in their difficult and honorable work.

Who celebrates the holiday?

Roads and paths, paths and highways. How long ago has a person felt that his life is closely connected with transport communications? A long time ago. The roads of history were often laid parallel to the development of road infrastructure. Perhaps primitive man, living in a close community, did not need the ability to easily move overland.

With the advent of the first trade relations, the first primitive transport, the need for accessible routes became inevitable.

Looking into history, one can be amazed at the ingenuity of the first road builders. What are the Roman roads worth? This highway, the thickness of the stone layer of which reached almost a meter, had a width of 11 meters and high dumps and embankments. No wonder the famous phrase says that all roads lead to Rome. The truly ancient capital was connected to other cities and states by 29 man-made highways.

In the great ancient empires, road construction was associated with practical use and aesthetic pleasure.

Therefore, ancient road workers, in particular designers developing projects for tracks and bridges, were revered people. Their work was highly paid. Of course, the construction itself was carried out by slaves or hired workers, who were paid mere pennies. But without their insanely hard work, the world would not have seen such magnificent ancient structures. And civilization itself, which requires communication systems, would not be able to move forward.

Roads have always been a means of government, they were strengthened, expanded, and improved.

Our ancestors also developed road infrastructure. The first road surfaces were stone and wooden made of crushed stone. Emperors issued special decrees regulating the maintenance and improvement of roads.

Large-scale road construction in Russia is associated with the construction of the highway by Peter I between Moscow and Volkhov, which was later extended to St. Petersburg. It was a real giant construction site. Since the path was laid not only through open areas, but also through dense forests, where the road had to twist and overcome swamps. It was from this time that the experience of building paths through impassable and swampy places appeared.

The complexity of construction work in Russia has always been associated with the unavailability of building materials. The first paths were generally laid out from boulders, which were collected in the fields or simply from wood. And also with difficult climatic conditions. Rainy autumn, harsh winters, spring confusion, and the incredible heat of summer did not in any way contribute to the construction of good roads.

This is probably why there have always been incredible and terrifying stories about Russian roads. Oh, roads, roads - dirt and anxiety.

But off-road is more expensive, and already in the 18th century the use of multilayer technologies began. During construction, the properties of soil and climate are taken into account, and the first professional devices for laying road materials appear.

The development of the automobile industry gave a crazy impetus to the emergence of an extensive and completely new network of highways. Roads with new surfaces that could withstand heavy loads and speeds were required.

The first expressway, designed for an unprecedented speed of 120 km/h at that time, was built on the eve of the war between Moscow and Minsk. During the war, most of the routes, roads, and highways that played a strategic role in the victory were completely destroyed. The forces of many construction teams were thrown into the restoration work. Through the gigantic efforts of ordinary people, the country's road infrastructure was restored.

Modern roads are not just kilometers of travel. This is an important transport system for the country. Without it, the development of the economy, communications and trade is impossible. This is also the work of millions of workers. Indeed, in Russia, almost ¾ million people are involved in the road sector.

Their engineering thoughts and design solutions are embodied in highways and city roads, in beautiful stable bridges of incredible length and safe mountain serpentines. Behind the implementation of such ideas is the work of thousands of workers, hundreds of machines, mechanisms that are engaged in the manufacture, extraction, movement and laying of tons of building materials.

It is all these workers who should be congratulated on Road Worker’s Day or, as the name of the holiday correctly sounds, on Road Worker’s Day in 2021.

About the profession

The development of a state's transport infrastructure affects the growth of its economy. Traffic safety and the speed of delivery of goods and passengers depend on the quality and ramifications of highways. They need to be regularly maintained and updated.

If you don’t know how to inexpensively but originally congratulate a road worker on his professional holiday, you can purchase, for example, a convenient car card. Firstly, it will certainly be useful to him while driving, and secondly, the hero of the occasion will be able to proudly mark on it with flags those fragments in the construction and repair of which he personally took part. If the recipient of the gift is a draftsman in the road construction industry, then he will certainly be delighted with a new personalized paper tube or, say, a set of drawing tools. And finally, inexpensive souvenirs, selected with care and taste, can awaken pleasant memories of the giver for a long time.

Workdays of road workers

New technologies, industrial development of the region, region, country and high speeds require not only the best vehicles, but also good roads. Their maintenance and repair are carried out by road workers, who celebrate their professional holiday on October 21.

The safety of people traveling on roads depends on the work of road workers. Road workers not only repair the roadbed itself - they must ensure that the markings on it are installed, that the necessary traffic signs are installed everywhere, that the roads are sprinkled with PGM in icy conditions, and cleared in snowfalls... The total length of the maintained roads is more than 277 km.

Today, the team of the Koshkinsky Road Maintenance Department employs 53 people, and their number will increase in the winter season. All of them are professionals in their field. Most of the employees have decades of experience. Young people also work. The director of the department R.T. told us what results the team of road workers of the State Enterprise “OSADO” of the Koshkinsky Daewoo meets the holiday. Mustafin.

In the summer, road workers eliminated defects in the road surface, i.e. pothole repair and barrier fencing repair. This year, pothole repairs with hot asphalt concrete were carried out on more than 1,300 m2, and by the PPM method (pressure spraying) on 5,050 m2. We were engaged in trimming weeds and bushes on the roadsides and in reserves. We carried out painting of road sign posts, car pavilions and bridges. Roadsides were strengthened. This year, road workers have repaired 10 culverts. Currently, they are installing stakes on culverts and barriers.

The most important, intense winter period is ahead. From November 1, work will begin in two shifts. And with the first heavy snowfall, snow removal and other equipment, which is now in readiness, will come on line. Anti-icing materials are currently being imported. 750 tons of sand-salt mixture were delivered out of a requirement of 2000 tons, 300 tons of salt.

The work of a road worker is hard, but honorable and responsible. This profession forces you to work all day long in the fresh air, regardless of rain, cold, or wind. Not everyone can cope with such a rhythm of life. The loads are enormous, especially in winter. The working day begins early in the morning and ends late in the evening, often lasting around the clock.

Rinat Talgatovich is proud of his team. Each worker is assigned several pieces of equipment, which are always in good working order and ready for work.

The photo shows those whom management decided to highlight in the foreground this year. And not because the rest of the team members are not worthy of attention. Every time we come here before their professional holiday, one or the other of the best workers is introduced to us here in turn.

What to give on this day

In order for Road Workers Day to be somehow remembered and leave behind a pleasant impression, it is customary to give gifts to the hero of the occasion:

  • Souvenirs suitable for any special occasion. These can be cups, T-shirts, themed keychains, cute refrigerator magnets and other nice little things.
  • Motorist card. Contains a description of all Russian roads. A memorable present and a useful thing for every road worker or traveler.
  • Draftsman's kit. Includes all the tools necessary for drawing work (compasses, tubes, measuring instruments). In the professional activity of a road construction engineer, you cannot do without these items.

You can also celebrate the holiday by sending a greeting card to a road worker you know:

Road Worker's Day in 2021 is not the most high-profile date, but it allows us to remember at least once every 12 months those who work for the benefit of motorists, the number of which is growing rapidly every year. The holiday provides an opportunity to pay due attention and show honor to the people who make Russian roads convenient and reliable for the movement of massive flows of trucks and cars.

Russian road workers celebrate their professional holiday

This industry employs about a million people, and the same number in related industries. Surveyors, designers, engineers, and builders are heroes who every day contribute to the development of the domestic road infrastructure and ensure the successful implementation of the national project “Safe Quality Roads” in 84 regions of the country.

During the implementation of the national project, more than 40,000 km of roads were repaired and built - these are sections of major highways, interregional and local roads. A separate priority area is the construction and reconstruction of roads to medical and educational institutions. During the implementation of the national road project alone, 120 capital-intensive objects were put into operation - these are bridges, interchanges and overpasses.

Every day, thanks to representatives of various professions, our country is confidently moving towards achieving national goals, and the quality of life of the population is improving. Road Workers Day is another reason to thank specialists for their hard but important work.

Even in difficult circumstances associated with the spread of coronavirus infection, road repairs did not stop: thanks to the dedicated work of road workers, it was possible not only to stay on schedule, but also to exceed the work plan.

Among the road workers there are many representatives of entire dynasties: some follow in the footsteps of their parents, others share the secrets of their professional skills with their children. Mikhail Fedorovich Klimov is the first deputy head of the Highway Department of the Vladimir Region Administration, a third-generation road worker: his father and both grandfathers were engaged in the construction and maintenance of roads. The family lived next to the road repair and construction department, and, as Mikhail Fedorovich himself says, as a child he went for a walk to the DRSU. In this organization, he subsequently worked his way up from foreman to manager. “I remember very well what roads there were in the Vladimir region during my childhood. Half are dirt, half are cobblestone. In the 60s, a limestone quarry opened near the city of Kovrov and roads began to be laid with crushed stone. In the 70s, asphalt appeared, first cold, then hot. Many processes looked primitive, mixtures were prepared by eye, and a lot of manual labor was used. Now the asphalt concrete mixtures are prepared at a high level, the materials have become more durable, and the technology has become perfect.” After graduating from the Vyaznikovsky school, he succumbed to the persuasion of his friends and, together with them, entered the Ivanovo Energy Institute. But you can’t escape fate - Mikhail Fedorovich did not study there. After working for a year at a plant in Vyazniki, he passed exams at the Vladimir Polytechnic Institute at the Faculty of Automobile Roads. Since then, road construction has become Mikhail Klimov’s profession of life. With the direct participation of Mikhail Fedorovich, dozens of kilometers of roads were built and repaired in the Vladimir region. Particularly significant construction projects are the bypasses of the city of Murom and the village of Baraki, as well as key objects of the national project “Safe Quality Roads”.

The head of the highway construction site No. 2 of Avtodorinzhiniring LLC from the Samara region, Ivan Aleksandrovich Sharkov, also chose his future profession following the example of his parents. “In our family, everyone worked in the road industry, and this was passed on to me,” says Ivan Sharkov. “I decided to continue working in the family business and entered the Samara Construction College.” Later he worked in Syzran: he repaired and built sections of the city’s road network. He says that he is proud of his work: “When you first come to a new facility that is in poor condition, and then you repair it and see the result, you become happy. It’s nice for you and for the people!” Among the significant objects in which Ivan Aleksandrovich took part is the major repair of the Ural - Syzran-2 road under the national project “Safe High-Quality Roads”.

Evgenia Anatolyevna Mishareva, deputy head of the production and technical department of the Department of Road, Utilities and Improvement of the Novokuznetsk City Administration, also followed in the footsteps of her parents. “Everyone in my family is a techie, so I didn’t have a choice of future profession,” says Evgenia. — I studied at a mining and technical college, and later graduated from the road transport department of the Tomsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. I started working as an engineer in an organization involved in construction and landscaping.” During her 13 years of work at the company, Evgenia participated in such large projects as the development of road infrastructure in a new area of the city, the improvement of the Kuzbass Fair exhibition complex, several mines and coal mines. The most interesting object was the reconstruction of the southern entrance to the city - a 3.5 km long highway. The work was difficult but exciting. It was necessary to make operational decisions regarding not only the construction of the road, but also all underground communications. “In 2018, I came to work at the road and communal services department. Previously, she was responsible for the construction and repair of roads - one can say that she studied the entire kitchen from the inside: the process, the production technology. But now I supervise and control the work of contractors. I have a direct connection to the national project “Safe Quality Roads”. It’s nice to drive on roads whose construction you have a direct connection to. I believe that one should choose a profession with one’s heart, because it is to work that we devote most of our lives.”

The director of Kurskavtodor, Roman Evgenievich Paramonov from Kursk, also a hereditary road worker, says that he did not see any other professional path for himself: before his eyes there were always vivid examples of his father and grandfather, who devoted their entire lives to the road industry. He has never regretted his choice and is proud of the projects in which he took part. For example, this is the construction of a section of the Fourth Transport Ring (currently the North-West Expressway) in Moscow, transport infrastructure facilities for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, a ring road in Turkmenistan and the Tavrida highway in Crimea. In the Kursk region, he worked on a project for the construction of an overpass across the railway in Kurchatov. This is one of the largest projects of the national project “Safe Quality Roads” in the region. “The main thing in the profession is to adhere to regulatory requirements and design decisions, to ensure production standards. The quality of the product, be it a road, an interchange, an overpass or a bridge, depends on the immediate desire of everyone - from workers to top management - to do their job well,” says Roman Paramonov.

Andrei Alekseevich Ovchinnikov from the Kurgan region was brought into the profession by his love for technology: collecting, repairing and repairing - his passion has been since his school days. Andrey Alekseevich has been in the road industry for more than 28 years, and at one enterprise. Now he works as a machine operator. “Vargashinsky DRSP is my second home, I feel responsible for my work, good people work with me and always support me,” says the specialist. Colleagues of Andrei Ovchinnikov say that he can handle any task - he can cope with any equipment, be it a roller or a road milling machine. “You can completely rely on him to do an excellent job. And all this is thanks to the love of work, the ability to carry out one’s work responsibly and with soul,” they say in the team. In the Kurgan region, with his participation, such important objects of the national project “Safe Quality Roads” were repaired, such as sections of the Kurgan - Zverinogolovskoye (border of Kazakhstan) highway, Lebyazhye - Mokrousovo - Shchigry - border of the Tyumen region.

It is simply impossible to imagine the road construction process without road laboratory workers, so competent specialists are always held in high esteem. Elena Vasilyevna Vyushkina is the head of the road laboratory of a contractor company that participates in road repairs under the national project “Safe Quality Roads” in the Yaroslavl region. Their objects this year: Uglich - Nekouz - Breytovo, Nagorye - Berendeevo, Vladimir - Pereslavl-Zalessky, Govyrino - Dmitrievskoye - Nagorye, Ostapkovo - Zaozerye - Kolokarevo - Staroe Volino. They also began work on the 2022 facilities: Karachikha - Shirinye and Rostov - Markovo - Stroganovo. Elena Vasilievna is directly involved in the development and selection of new asphalt concrete mixtures. In 2021, with her participation, the company began a major reconstruction of the asphalt concrete plant and modernization of the laboratory. Under her leadership, the latest developments of the latest equipment were introduced into the work.

“Thanks to the national project “Safe Quality Roads”, work has recently increased, there are more facilities, new technologies and materials are constantly being introduced. Three years ago, new GOST standards for asphalt concrete mixtures were introduced throughout Russia; we updated our laboratory to meet these modern requirements. This year it’s easier for us to work, we already know these mixtures. We continue to keep up with the times, and next year we plan to study a new methodology for selecting asphalt concrete mixtures and their recipes using “Superpave,” says Elena Vyushkina. She admits: the work can be dirty, dusty, and physically difficult; there is a lot of travel throughout the region. But, despite her extensive work experience, she always learns something new and she loves it!

People are the industry's most valuable resource. Any creative work (road construction can be classified precisely in this category) is impossible without mutual assistance, mutual respect, and mutual assistance. And the result of the common cause depends on how strong the team is, how professional it is. The fact that the quality of roads in the country is becoming better and better, and the profession of a road engineer itself is becoming more prestigious, indicates that excellent specialists work in our country! And each of them makes a huge contribution to improving the quality of life in Russia.

The national project “Safe Quality Roads” is one of 14 national projects implemented in Russia. Under the national project “Safe Quality Roads”, more than 16,000 km of roads were built, repaired or reconstructed in 2021; the same figure in 2020. The goal for 2021 is no less. Large-scale work is underway in 84 regions.

When does it take place?

The construction of new cities and buildings, the appearance of a large number of cars and motorcycles leads in turn to an increase in the number of roads. In order to focus on the problems of development of the road industry, it is necessary to show the importance and invaluable contribution of the common man in resolving issues related to the construction of highways that meet the latest standards of our time. In this regard, it was dedicated work in the unfavorable weather conditions of Russian reality, as well as the desire to popularize professions in this field of activity, that led to the creation of Road Worker Day, which is usually celebrated on every third Sunday of October.

The small workforce of Vizir LLC, which employs about 30 people, has been headed by road foreman N.V. for a very long time. Trofimov. Nikolai Vasilyevich is a high-class professional, a deeply knowledgeable person in the road business. And over the several decades he worked on the Oleninsky section of the M-9 “Baltia” road, he saw everything. On the eve of the professional holiday - Road Workers' Day, we asked an experienced specialist and respected manager several questions.

— Nikolai Vasilyevich, what has changed in your work in recent years, in connection with the transition to a different subordination and major repairs of the highway, for the better or vice versa?

— I think we’ll start our conversation with the main thing. I remember how several years ago you and I discussed the deplorable state in which our section of the M-9 “Baltic” highway was located. I say “ours” because not only me, but also many members of our small team have been working on this route for decades, and have become attached to it with their souls; this road is very dear to us. It connects not only cities, regions, countries, but also the people who serve it. The highway, put into operation back in the 60s of the twentieth century, was then almost completely destroyed by multi-ton vehicles. And we didn’t have time to patch it up. But four years ago, one might say, a small miracle happened: the M-9 “Baltic” highway was completely repaired. The road surface has finally become smooth, acceleration and deceleration lanes have been created in the right places, special extensions have been made, bus stops have been put in order, etc.

— Has it become more difficult to work on the updated track?

— In the new conditions, working has become both easier and more difficult. There is no longer a need to patch holes in the asphalt almost every day. On the other hand, control over our actions by a higher organization has increased significantly. Video cameras are installed at 277 and 298 kilometers of our section. There is constant video monitoring of the condition of the road surface, the requirements for which have increased greatly.

— Nikolai Vasilyevich, what types of work do you perform to care for the road surface?

“Every day we remove garbage, replace worn or stolen road signs, and mow the grass in the road right-of-way several times a summer. Well, in winter there are other worries. Sprinkling the track with a sand-salt mixture, we fight ice and clear it of snow. The road surface in winter should be clean and dry, as in summer. These are the requirements of management. Therefore, our workers are on night duty during the winter season. Often you have to be alerted; urgent work appears at night. Of course, winter is a special challenge for us. The climate in our region is quite unpredictable - today it’s warm, and tomorrow there’s severe frost, followed by a sudden thaw and even rain.

- So, in recent years you have not been doing your “favorite” business - pothole repair?

- Unfortunately, it is not. One part of our section of the highway was extensively repaired earlier, probably about 8 years ago. And in this place potholes and cracks began to appear on the road surface. We seal them with so-called “cold” or hot cast asphalt. All the material necessary for repairs is delivered to us from Moscow. He is transported in a special heated car. And we have equipment that heats the road mixture to the required temperature. By the way, these materials are very wear-resistant.

— Nikolai Vasilyevich, has your company’s tractor fleet been updated in recent years?

— The last time we received new equipment was three years ago, when we became part of Vizir LLC. These are four KAMAZ trucks, two MTZ tractors, a loader, a T-150 and a grader. This equipment is properly maintained, so it does not let us down.

“We are all road users and we see that after the renovation of the M-9 Baltic highway, the speed of traffic has increased significantly. Does this create any difficulties for you, the people working on it?

— After repairing the highway, after creating excellent conditions for movement along it, many problems arose. Previously, drivers, rolling over holes and potholes, swore strongly at the road workers. Now, despite the fact that traffic on the M-9 “Baltiya” is regulated by signs and bright, clear markings, they are not just driving, enjoying calm, safe traffic, but are literally “flying.” Even past road workers working on the highway, these “racers” drive at great speed, not paying attention to the fences and warning signs. Hence the increased accident rate. Drivers do not comply with traffic rules, behave arrogantly and disrespectfully towards each other. And if an accident occurs, the road workers are blamed for everything. Not long ago, a man sitting behind the wheel of a “cool” jeep, in a hurry somewhere, decided to overtake a convoy of cars at a bend in the road. Jumping out from behind the hill, he collided with a light truck walking in the oncoming lane. The impact was so strong that the doors of the jeep fell off. Thank you, everyone survived. But even in this case, the culprit of the accident blamed us, the road workers, for his sins. We installed noise strips on the “ring”. This is the equivalent of a speed bump. They are intended to shake up an inattentive or dozing driver, as there is a dangerous intersection ahead. But this doesn't help either. A few days ago, a driver from Olenino, crossing the M-9 “Baltia”, missed five cars, but did not notice the sixth; a collision occurred. Citizens sitting behind the wheel should be more attentive, cautious, and strictly follow the traffic rules, because any human life is precious. Believe me, we have seen a lot in our lifetime.

— On the eve of your professional holiday, name the best employees of Vizir LLC.

-We employ responsible, trouble-free people who understand that much of our work depends on them. They also know that the work of road workers is visible to everyone, and everyone, even a person who has little understanding of our affairs, tries to evaluate it. It’s hard for me to name the best, we have all the best, as they say, we don’t keep the bad ones. And yet, this is KDM driver E.A. Krymov, loader driver V.V. Trofimov, tractor driver A.N. Molchanov and his colleague M.V. Alekseev.

— Nikolai Vasilyevich, on the eve of your professional holiday, what would you wish to the people working next to you, to your colleagues from other road organizations?

— I sincerely congratulate the workforce of Vizir LLC, my colleagues - road workers, on the Day of Road Workers! I wish everyone good health, prosperity, personal happiness, patience and success in our difficult work!

history of the holiday

Road Worker's Day in Russia is an official holiday date. It owes its appearance to Decree No. 1435, issued by Russian President Boris Yeltsin on October 14. At first, this holiday was combined with Motorists' Day, and it coincided every time with the last Sunday of October. Later, with Vladimir Putin coming to power, Road Worker Day began to be celebrated separately. The holiday date has shifted to the third Sunday in October. The new holiday was established on March 23 in 2000 by presidential decree No. 556.
