The decision to establish World Men's Day was made by the only President of the USSR M.S. Gorbachev. In addition to the countries of the former Soviet Union, this idea was supported by the Vienna city government and some international organizations, including the UN.

During one of his speeches at a meeting, he stated that male aggression is caused by testosterone acting on the brain. And in order to support the stronger sex in positive endeavors, he proposed awarding the “World Men’s Prize” to its deserving representatives. Only the man who learned “to direct activity in a different direction without resorting to violence” could receive it. This must be a man who has “proven fortitude and outstanding moral qualities, and has achieved success in the fields of politics, business, science, culture, and art.”

At the same time, Mikhail Gorbachev came up with an initiative - men should have a holiday, regardless of whether they served in the army or not.

The Vienna Magistrate supported the initiatives of Gorbachev and Kindell. Since then, the UN and many other international organizations have celebrated World Men's Day, which they decided to celebrate on the first Saturday of November. And Gorbachev became president of World Men's Day.

The prize was awarded until 2006. It was a small bronze copy of Rodin's sculpture "The Thinker".
