History and traditions of the holiday
The event dates back to 1985. At a meeting of the International Union of Architects, a decision was made to establish a professional holiday. 11 years later, at the 20th General Assembly, the event was approved to be moved from the first Monday in July to the first Monday in October.
The date chosen has a symbolic meaning. It is dedicated to World Housing Day, held under the auspices of the United Nations. Both holidays are ideologically very close, professing common goals of increasing the comfort and ergonomics of populated areas and places of residence. They have themes that are set in advance.
International Architecture Day is marked by exhibitions, symposiums, seminars and conferences. Participants make presentations on industry issues. Proposals are being put forward to improve legislation. The possibilities of using new technologies are being considered. Particular attention is paid to environmentally friendly materials used in the construction of structures, as well as increasing energy efficiency. It allows you to reduce the cost of purchasing coolants and electricity.
At the beginning of October, the head of state issues a decree conferring the honorary title “People’s Architect of the Russian Federation.” It is awarded to people who have made a significant contribution to the development of the industry. Festivals are held that have become gathering places for leading experts in the region. Excursions and exhibitions are organized, models and photographs of objects are demonstrated. You can see outstanding works in person.
At the festive table, those gathered say warm words, wishes for health and success in responsible work, and exchange gifts. Congratulations and toasts are heard, ending with the clink of glasses.
When is Architect's Day celebrated?
It must be said that there was some confusion with the date of this holiday. The fact is that back in 1985, the International Union of Architects established a holiday called World Architecture Day. This organization was created in the difficult post-war year of 1946, when most of the cities and settlements of Eastern and Western Europe lay in ruins. They had to be rebuilt, which required the efforts of the entire world community and, of course, architects around the world. To emphasize the special importance of architecture and architects for peaceful life, the day was designated - the first Monday of July.
However, 11 years later, the General Assembly of the International Union of Architects decided that it would be more correct to celebrate this professional holiday simultaneously with Housing Day - on the first Monday in October. As a result of this confusion, two independent holidays were formed - Architect's Day and World Architecture Day. The first of these is now celebrated on July 4th. This will be the case in 2022. But World Architecture Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October. This means that in 2022 this day falls on the 3rd.
But be that as it may, these are two important holidays not only for those people who are directly associated with this profession, but also for all those who love and appreciate architecture, which, we remind you, is nothing more than frozen music. And many of her works are rightfully considered an achievement of all mankind.
About the profession
Architects carry out work related to the construction of structures. Their research is included in the initial stage of construction, embodied in the form of drawings, estimates, and models.
The path to the profession begins with obtaining an education at a specialized higher educational institution. The graduate must be proficient in fine arts, mathematics, physics and a number of special disciplines. The ability to use application software packages for automation of calculations and computer visualization tools is required.
The activity requires compliance with building codes, government standards and safety measures. Errors at the design stage can lead to significant losses. The profession of an architect is highly paid and in demand in private companies.
How to celebrate Architect's Day
On the first Monday in July, various events are held annually to celebrate Architect's Day. Scientific symposiums, professional conferences, and congresses bring together prominent representatives of the profession, where they share their wealth of experience and discuss current issues related to building design and restoration.
On Architect's Day, various competitions are held among architects, both professional and beginners, in different cities of the country. The celebration ends with summing up, honoring and awarding the winners.
Who's celebrating?
Man differs from other representatives of the living world not only in the presence of intelligence, but also in his needs for housing. Any family begins its life by searching for suitable housing. Even ancient people tried to create basic comfort in caves. And later the first clay, wooden, and stone buildings began to be erected. With the development of civilization, new technologies and construction methods appeared.
But as it turned out, it is not so easy to put together a reliable building from the same stones and metal. The slightest mistake or miscalculation leads to catastrophic consequences.
Therefore, there was a need for clear developments, an action plan, where all the details of the construction of the facility were provided for and calculated. It was this kind of work that became the main activity of architects.
But simple worked out schemes are so boring. And most architects are not just draftsmen who carefully draw lines on paper in accordance with GOST standards, but, for the most part, creative and extraordinary people. Thanks to their imagination and flight of thought, unique structures appeared that are classified as cultural world values.
Humanity still cannot understand the architectural decisions of the creators of the pyramids, admires the beauty of the Colosseum and the Taj Mahal, and is amazed at the stability of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Alexander Column.
Behind all these masterpieces is the originality, calibrated calculations and unconventional solutions of the architects.
It is the people of this profession that we will congratulate on Architect's Day in 2021 - it is better to find out what date this holiday is in advance, since the date is not constant and falls on the first Monday of October.
The development of the modern economy is proceeding at a rapid pace: cities are expanding, industrial facilities are being built, and more and more agricultural buildings are appearing. And all this requires a competent approach and responsibility in the work of managers, engineers, design department employees, builders, and support staff. Therefore, on this day it is impossible to ignore the people who contribute their treasure to the construction of architectural structures.
It is worth congratulating both the students - future designers, and the teachers who are introducing young people to the intricacies of this craft.
Celebration traditions
As a rule, various events are held on Architect's Day. These can be scientific symposiums, conferences, congresses, to which prominent representatives of the profession are invited. At these meetings, famous architects share valuable experience, solve various issues related to the design of buildings, as well as the implementation of restoration work on architectural monuments.
Various exhibitions are organized for people whose profession is not related to building design, as well as for teenagers and young people. After viewing the exhibition, the visitor can become more familiar with the art of architecture, and someone may decide to devote their life to this profession.
Architecture Day is celebrated around the world in a very unconventional way
The celebration of Architecture Day is somewhat different from other holidays. On this day, there are practically no entertainment events or concerts, no fireworks or fireworks. But this holiday provides an excellent opportunity for architects from different parts of the world to get together and discuss important issues. Representatives of this profession organize exhibitions, lectures, conferences and discussions at which they raise current issues and exchange the results of their work, as well as acquired knowledge and experience.
This holiday should not be confused with Architect’s Day, which is celebrated in the country on July 1. Architect's Day is dedicated primarily to people working in this difficult and noble profession. Various concerts and entertainment events are organized in their honor, they congratulate them on their professional holiday and wish them all the best. Architecture Day is associated with the possibilities of solving current problems and improving the quality of education in this field.
Traditions
On the first Monday of October, it is customary to hold various lectures and seminars on architecture. Gatherings of industry experts in conference format are also common. Everyone is invited to thematic exhibitions. These events are often free and designed to educate the general public. They discuss the latest developments and promising scientific theories, and recently environmental issues have been given priority. Popular reports on the use of materials in construction, the process of creation and operation of which does not release substances harmful to the environment. In addition, public displays of models of the most famous buildings in the world or those that have yet to be built are popular, but they are non-standard and difficult to implement.
In the Russian Federation, a significant award is dedicated to the holiday for those who design structures - “People's Architect of the Russian Federation”. The President personally signs a decree confirming who will receive the honorary award.
World Architects Day
World Architects Day 2021 is celebrated on October 4th. Traditionally, this holiday is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October. Humanity admires the great architectural discoveries and design solutions of designers. But few people think about how much time, labor and effort goes behind each building. There is a special holiday in October when there is a great opportunity to congratulate these creators of thought frozen in stone - architects.
Great man-made structures and small buildings, historical and cultural monuments and private buildings - not a single building, not a single construction project would be brought to life without the creative approach of architects. It was the work of these extraordinary individuals that became the reason for the emergence of the original holiday - Architect's Day.

history of the holiday
You can find several interpretations of the official date of celebration of this event. The confusion stems from the postponement of the official date. The holiday first appeared in 1985, when the International Union of Architects - UIA initially set a date set for the first Monday in July.
The ISA itself appeared in the post-war years. The need to create such an organization was dictated by life itself. Most European countries tried to return to normal life after terrible devastation.
It was extremely important not only to restore destroyed cultural sites, but also to provide citizens with housing and breathe new life into production. It was much easier to do this by joining forces. For these purposes, a union was organized that united people who sought to create a “new life.”
The July holiday did not last that long. Literally at the 20th meeting, the General Assembly of the Union decides to postpone the holiday. And, since 1996, it has been celebrated in October, also on the first Mondays. The name of the holiday has also changed, now it sounds like World Architects Day.
According to some reports, the date change is associated with the establishment of World Housing Day by the UN, which coincided with the date of the main celebration. Both holidays have similar tasks and themes. Therefore, it was logical to combine them. But the memory of the first architectural festival remained. For example, in Ukraine and Belarus, professional day has remained unchanged - its celebration takes place in July.
The topic is chosen annually to be relevant to current problems in architecture. At symposiums and forums, conferences and seminars, issues of improving the legislative framework and introducing modern technologies are raised. The problems of energy efficiency and environmentally friendly materials are quite acute.
The honorary title “People's Architect” has been established in Russia. It is awarded to people who have made a significant contribution to the development of the industry on the basis of a Decree signed by the President on the eve of the holiday.
About the profession
An architect's scope of work includes design work, which includes drawings, estimates and models. In fact, this is the first stage of any construction of a residential or public, industrial or agricultural, administrative facility.
Training in this specialty takes place in specialized educational institutions. A specialist who has received a higher education must have skills and knowledge in the field of fine arts and special disciplines, mathematics and physics. Modern realities oblige designers to master application programs and computer methods of calculation and visualization.
An architect in his work must rely on construction standards and GOSTs, rules and safety requirements. The future fate of construction depends on the correct execution of the drawings. Mistakes at this stage are fraught not only with colossal losses, but also with catastrophic consequences.
The world is well aware of historical examples of both grandiose and erroneous architectural decisions. The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa became famous precisely because of an architectural mistake. The inclination of the building from the vertical reached 5.50, but after repair work it was stopped at 40.
But this is not the most falling structure. In China, there is a 10-meter-high tower that tilted as much as 120 centimeters, but remained stable. The designers' miscalculation was reflected in the annual immersion of the Library of Alexandria into the ground by as much as 2 centimeters. At the beginning of the work, the weight of the books was not taken into account.
It was thanks to a typo in the drawings that the smallest skyscraper was born. Initially, it was planned to build a grandiose high-rise building 146 meters high in the town of Wichita Falls. But the drawings indicated inches instead of feet. This oversight resulted in a huge scandal. The customer ultimately received not a 480-foot building, but an ordinary 4-story house.
There are both grandiose and record-breaking buildings that are included in the list of earth records. From space you can easily see the grandiose pyramids pointing their cones into the sky. The longest building was erected in Volgograd. The nine-story building stretches 1,140 meters and has several addresses. The building contains 1,400 residential apartments, and it was built back in 1927-1930. And in Warsaw, the narrowest building is being built, the width of which will be only 152 centimeters.
But it is not enough for an architect to become familiar with a set of standard requirements. This is a creative profession that requires a creative approach and non-standard solutions. It was thanks to the unique ideas of the miracle planners that the world was able to see a dam that transmits whispers over a 100-meter distance, a skyscraper with a cascading pool on the roof, a bridge built according to 3-century-old drawings, a building through which a highway passes.
Folk traditions of the holiday
The main tradition of the holiday is the choice of a specific theme. Meeting at the congress on the specified day, architects discuss the results of activities in this direction, consider ways to develop and improve architectural work. At conferences and meetings, they consider the pressing problem of our time and outline ways to solve it. In recent years, the main agenda has been concern for nature conservation and the use of environmentally friendly materials for the construction of buildings and structures.
The holiday of architecture in Russia is distinguished by days of architecture
Like the rest of the world, Russia does not celebrate World Architecture Day on a grand scale. However, some cities in our country have distinguished themselves with their own celebration traditions.
The city of Nizhny Novgorod was one of the first to create the so-called “days of architecture”, held on the day of the architecture holiday. Since 2006, thematic festivals, exhibitions, conventions, lectures and seminars are regularly held at the city's venues. All of them are dedicated to architecture and have the goal of introducing and introducing young people to this profession.
In the capital, architecture days are held in the form of excursions to get acquainted with the historical and modern architecture of Moscow. In addition, on the eve of the holiday, the city holds various competitions among venerable architects and amateurs. And on the day of the holiday, the results are summed up and the winners are awarded.
Signs of the holiday
By 2000, half the population of our planet lived in cities, and gradually, every year, the number of urban residents increases. Therefore, it is important to properly organize the space for living in a city. Architectural activity in organizing places where people live is becoming more important, developing new directions for the development of the urban atmosphere.
Since the holiday is young, signs reflecting the meaning of Architecture Day have not yet been formed. But according to popular beliefs, on October 4, 2021, you need to work hard. This will be the key to prosperity in the near future. This sign echoes the activities of architects: careful, painstaking work, taking into account many nuances, will satisfy the needs of city residents.
Without architecture, it is impossible to make life more convenient, since it is impossible to coordinate the location of residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and public places without knowledge of the laws of urban planning. It is she who creates the shell in which a person exists. The life and attitude of society depends on its condition.
