Celebrations on the occasion of Traffic Police Day begin on July 3, 1936. On this day, the State Automobile Inspectorate of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs was created. The date became an unofficial holiday in honor of traffic police officers. In the Russian Federation, this service existed until 1998 and was renamed the State Road Safety Inspectorate (GIBDD). After 4 years, it received a second official name, which it had back in Soviet times - traffic police.

In Russia, the holiday was established by Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 502 “On declaring the Day of the State Road Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation” dated July 3, 2009. The document was signed by Rashid Nurgaliev.
