ISO
The ISO organization is responsible for creating international quality standards for all areas of human activity. Outside the scope of this organization are the areas of electronics, communications and electrical engineering. In these areas of human activity, the IEC is responsible for standardization.
Since its inception, the International Standards Organization has created approximately 7,200 standards, and 500 new regulations are introduced every year. This number also includes additions or improvements to existing standards.
According to statistics, the creation, development and implementation of a new international quality standard takes on average about 5-6 years of intensive work.
It is on the day of the creation of ISO that it is customary to celebrate Standardization and Metrology Day.
Competitions
Eye meter Before holding the competition, it is necessary to prepare in advance accurate scales and products that participants will measure: apples, potatoes, sugar, candies, etc. Contestants are asked to eyeball a kilogram of a particular product. The one who turns out to be the most accurate will win the competition.
Music competition Participants of the competition are divided into two teams. Teams take turns recalling and singing songs that mention measurement values. The team that manages to perform the most musical compositions wins.
The strongest Guests of the holiday who are not afraid to demonstrate their strength are invited to take part in the competition. It is necessary to prepare the props in advance: a dynamometer - a device for measuring strength in the hands. Participants in the competition take turns measuring their strength with a device. The participant who manages to demonstrate the best result wins.
What does the metrological service of Russia do?
Few people know when Metrologist Day is in Russia, but the domestic metrology and standardization service today is a complex and well-established system, including:
- an extensive network of a large number of research institutes;
- verification organizations;
- metrological control and testing organizations.
All these institutions and organizations perform many essential functions:
- provide research with measurements;
- carry out the development, production and operation of various technical devices;
- control the condition of material resources;
- monitor the medical care of the population, the state of the country’s defense complex, etc.
The purpose of standardization in the Russian Federation is to ensure safety for the health and life of humans, plants, animals, as well as environmental protection; creating optimal conditions for the most rational use of absolutely all types of national resources and compliance of any standardization objects with their intended purpose, as well as promoting the complete elimination of technical barriers and obstacles in trade relations.
The accuracy of measurements and their quality in modern times determine the impossibility or possibility of creating absolutely innovative technical devices.
Interesting Facts
- In Rus', the unit of length was the “span” or “elbow”. Initially, this measure was the distance between the ends of the thumb and index finger.
- In ancient times, people invented standard measures that served to maintain the unity of measures. They were treated with care and kept in temples and churches.
- In ancient times, in some regions, the width of the grain and the thickness of a camel's hair were used as a measure of length.
- The first definition of the meter was adopted by scientists from France J. d'Alembert and P. Mechain in 1791. It was defined as one ten-millionth of a quarter of the Paris meridian.
- The metric system of measures was first proposed in France in early 1840. In Russia it was appreciated and supported by D.I. Mendeleev, who promoted the adoption of metric reform.
- The system of units for the metric system is the International System of Units, or SI. It is used in most countries of the world. The SI contains 7 basic units: meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, modulus, candela.
How to celebrate Metrologist Day
World Metrology Day is celebrated not only by metrologists, engineers, manufacturers of equipment, measuring equipment, employees of standardization and certification centers. It is also celebrated by students, graduates and teachers of specialized universities. On this day, competitions, seminars, and conferences are held. Distinguished metrology workers are awarded certificates and diplomas.
Metrological science is important because it links together the practice and theory of all branches of knowledge and life. Just as in mathematics it is impossible to do without theoretical calculations, so it is impossible to do without metrology during the implementation of these calculations. Even D.I. Mendeleev clearly noted: “Exact science is unthinkable without measure.”
About the profession
Human activity is closely related to the measurement of physical quantities. They are necessary as initial information for process management, design, and decision making. There is a discipline that systematizes such knowledge. Metrologists are engaged in measuring physical quantities. For this purpose, devices are used that must undergo regular verification (establishing compliance with the accuracy class stated in the documentation). Their tasks include developing and monitoring compliance with state standards.
The path to the profession begins after graduation. The graduate must be proficient in applied computer program packages and basic subjects, including mathematics, physics, and engineering graphics. The job comes with a lot of responsibility. It is in demand mainly only at large enterprises and government agencies, where it is necessary to carry out certification and testing of products and materials. In Western countries, the work of metrologists is highly paid.
What is "standardization"
So, the term “standardization” means the process of creating and putting into operation standards for compliance with safety regulations and approaching maximum savings, subject to compliance with all functional conditions of activity in a specific limited area of office work or commodity production. Anything can be the object of standardization. These are products, scientific and technical terms, methods, requirements, rules, designations, norms and much more.
Standardization applies to all concepts that do not imply one-time use. It is used in the fields of technology and science, industry, agriculture, transport, construction, culture and healthcare and, of course, in international trade.
Standardization has a positive effect on increasing the level of international production and also enhances progress in the fields of science and technology.
Congratulations on Standardization Day are deservedly accepted by the employees of the two main organizations in this area that create global standards. These are ISO - International Organization for Standardization, and IEC - International Electrotechnical Commission.
IEC
The International Electrotechnical Commission was created much earlier than ISO. It was founded back in 1906 and is responsible for international standards in the fields of communications and radio electronics, as well as electrical engineering.
Today, the IEC includes more than 50 countries around the world. The USSR, and subsequently the Russian Federation, became a member of the organization in 1921. In 1967, ISO and IEC effectively merged into one organization, and IEC became one of the ISO divisions responsible for electrical and radio engineering.
Congratulations on Standardization Day are accepted in both of these organizations on the same day, since it is considered a worldwide holiday in all areas of human activity.
During its activity, the International Electrotechnical Commission has created more than 2000 different standards.

Metrology (from Greek - measure, measuring instrument and thought, reason) is the science of measurements, methods and means of ensuring their unity and ways to achieve the necessary accuracy. The metric system appeared in France in the 19th century. The founder of metrology in our country was Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev.
This science is so important that the activities of metrologists are determined by the articles of the Constitution of the Russian Federation concerning its regulation.
Metric instruments are needed everywhere - they are used in factories, factories, and various institutions. Modern technologies use ultra-precise measurement standards.
A new direction has been launched - nanometrology. And, of course, metrology specialists must have a large amount of knowledge, be careful and patient in order to work with such equipment.
Metrologist's Day is celebrated by metrologists, engineers, manufacturers of equipment, measuring equipment, and employees of standardization and certification centers. The holiday is considered by teachers and students of specialized departments of universities and colleges.
On International Metrology Day, we congratulate everyone who has devoted themselves to this profession on the holiday, we wish them success in their work and personal happiness.
