City Day in Moscow in 2021 is an anticipated event by both city residents and tourists. It has already been definitely decided that the celebration will take place. The program of events is already being prepared, and the event, dedicated to the 874th anniversary of the city, promises to be bright and memorable. The date is set for a weekend in September, but has been pushed back slightly in 2021. Current information about the capital's City Day is described in the article.
What date is Moscow City Day celebrated in 2021?
In accordance with the annual tradition, Moscow City Day is celebrated on the first or second (a week later) Saturday of September. This year, 2021, the mayor of the city decided to postpone the date to a later date. Tweeted this on August 12, 2021.
Thus, Moscow City Day in 2021 will be celebrated by Muscovites and guests of the capital on the weekend of September 11 and 12, instead of the traditional 4 and 5. However, the exact program of events is still unknown; much depends on the epidemiological situation in the capital.

history of the holiday
Moscow City Day has quite an interesting history. It was first celebrated in 1847, when they celebrated the 700th anniversary of the founding of the capital. This holiday was organized on the initiative of Moscow Slavophile publicists. Among them were a large number of writers and scientists. Historians K. Aksakov and M. Pogodin played a significant role in this event. Thus, a year before the celebration, historian I. Zabelin suggested that the first mention of the current capital of the Russian Federation in chronicles appeared on April 4, 1147. Subsequently, all past ideas were refuted, and the statement of this scientist was recognized as the only correct one. Thus, the idea of celebrating Moscow City Day was supported by Bishop Philaret and Adjutant General A. Shcherbatov.
So it was decided in the spring of 1847 to celebrate Moscow Day for 3 days. In accordance with the plan, they first planned to celebrate in the church, after which a program was established for high society, held at Moscow University and ending with points from the Governor General. Those finishing the day wanted to party. However, it was not possible to implement the plans, since the emperor did not approve of the activities of Slavophile publicists, which were of an oppositional nature.
At that time, the exact date when Moscow was founded had not yet been decided. Based on this, Nicholas was the first to issue an order that the celebration in honor of the anniversary of the capital should be held on January 1, 1847. On this very morning in the Chudov Monastery, during the liturgy, the prayer of the Moscow Metropolitan for the Glory of the city was voiced. Afterwards, solemn services were held in all the temples of Kakovy. On the Main Square of the capital, people could see how brightly a specially composed composition of oil lamps installed on the building of the Moscow Kremlin burned. The foot of the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Shcherbatov house on Tverskaya Street, the oldest university in Moscow, as well as the Novodevichy Convent were decorated similarly. Despite the fact that due to the weather worsening, a significant number of lamps were soon installed, the lighting had a strong impression on the residents of Moscow. However, the members of the circle of Slavophiles said that the celebration was rather modest; they also did not hide their own dissatisfaction with this matter.
The next time after the day of the city of Moscow is only after 100 years. In 1947, G. M. Popov introduced the idea of holding a city event dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Moscow. Let's welcome this initiative; the celebration was planned for September. That year, City Day was celebrated on the 7th day of the first month of autumn.
The next time Moscow celebrated its day was 39 years later. Then Boris Yeltsin was the City Committee of the CPSU. In this regard, in September 1986, fairs began to open in various areas of the capital, where, for the most part, products were sold.
On September 19, 1987, the next celebration of Moscow Day was held. In 1991, this holiday was celebrated on the last day of summer.
When the USSR collapsed, City Day began to be celebrated only in 1997, this celebration was dedicated to the 850th anniversary of the founding of the capital. The holiday was planned for the first weekend of September and was celebrated for two days. The celebration was quite large-scale.
In the year 2000, Moscow City Day was celebrated in a shortened manner due to the tragedy - the Kursk submarine sank, a terrorist attack was committed in the passage under Pushkin Square, and there was also a fire in the Ostankino TV tower.
In 2004, the celebration was completely canceled. This is due to the fact that school number one in Beslan was captured by terrorists. Subsequently, Moscow City Day was celebrated annually.

The rise of Moscow in the first half of the 14th century is directly related to Mongol-Tatar rule in Rus'. The Golden Horde collected tribute from the Russian principalities, and from time to time waves of destructive raids of the Horde rolled into Rus'. The princes had to obtain permission to reign from the Horde - a label. For a long time, the Tver princes had the Grand Duke's label, until, as a result of intrigues, the Moscow Prince Yuri Daniilovich (1303-1325) received it from the hands of the Horde Khan, who became the first Moscow prince to receive the label for the Grand Reign of Vladimir. However, the prince did not celebrate his victory for long - he was hacked to death right in the Horde by the son of the agreed Tver prince. But the label was retained by the heirs of the Moscow prince and Ivan Kalita reinforced the grand-ducal power with the right to collect tribute from Russian lands for transfer to the Golden Horde; this circumstance became one of the serious factors in strengthening the position of the Moscow principality. Another factor was the remoteness and relative protection of the Moscow lands, covered with dense forests, due to which people flocked here, seeking shelter and protection from foreign troops. In 1325, Metropolitan Peter of Kiev and All Rus' moved his residence to Moscow from Vladimir-on-Klyazma, after which Moscow became one of the main centers of Orthodoxy.
By collecting tribute for the Horde, Ivan Kalita (1325-1340) managed to accumulate significant wealth, which he used to expand the influence of Moscow. He bought a number of lands: Uglich, Galich Mersky, Beloozero; maintained grand ducal control over many other territories. The main rival of Moscow at that time was the Tver Principality. Ivan Kalita used the power of the Horde to establish his own dominance and defeat the Tver princes, although the rivalry with Tver continued for many decades. Under Kalita, large-scale construction began in Moscow, the first stone buildings appeared (until then the city was entirely wooden)[25]. In 1329, the church-bell tower of St. John the Climacus was erected, in 1330 the construction of the Church of the Savior on Bor was completed - the oldest Moscow church that survived into the 20th century and was destroyed in 1933; in 1326 and 1333, instead of wooden churches, the white-stone Assumption and Archangel Cathedrals were erected, the latter of which became the tomb of Moscow rulers. In 1339, the Moscow Kremlin was surrounded by new walls and oak towers. The position of Moscow continued to strengthen under the heirs of Ivan Kalita: Simeon Gordom (1340-1353), Ivan the Red (1353-1359) and, especially, Dmitry Donskoy (1359-1389). Under them, the title of Grand Dukes was finally established for the Moscow rulers: with the exception of a short period during the childhood of Dmitry Donskoy, Moscow firmly retained the Grand Duke's Vladimir table.

In 1353, Moscow suffered a terrible disaster - a plague epidemic that claimed many thousands of lives, including Grand Duke Simeon and his sons. In 1365, Moscow burned down during the terrible All Saints Fire (named after the Church of All Saints, from which the fire spread). This fire was not the first; Moscow had previously burned out in 1331, 1337, 1343 and 1354. After the fire of 1365, Prince Dmitry and the boyars decided to build a stone fortress. It was built with exceptional speed in 1367-1368, and the area of the protected territory expanded noticeably. The perimeter of the walls increased, according to calculations by N. N. Voronin, to 1979 meters [25]. At the same time, a stone bridge was built across the Neglinnaya River. From then on, Moscow began to be called white-stone. In addition to the fortifications of the Kremlin - the most powerful fortress in North-Eastern Rus' at that time, the defensive system of Moscow during the time of Dmitry Donskoy and his successor Vasily Dmitrievich (1389-1425) was supplemented by a ring of monasteries on the approaches to the city: fortified Andronikov (founded around 1357), Zachatievsky (about 1360), Simonov (about 1370), Petrovsky (about 1377), Rozhdestvensky (about 1386) and Sretensky (1397) monasteries. During the reign of Dmitry Donskoy, Moscow, having withstood a number of clashes with its rivals - the Tver princes and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, took on the role of a unifier of Russian lands in the fight against the Mongol-Tatars. In 1368 and 1370, Moscow was besieged by the Lithuanian prince Olgerd. Dmitry managed to inflict two serious defeats on the Horde: in the Battle of the Vozha River (1378) and in the Battle of Kulikovo (1380). However, he failed to save Moscow from ruin in 1382 - Khan Tokhtamysh captured the city by deception, plundered it and burned it. Dmitry resumed paying tribute, and the khan secured the great reign for Dmitry and his descendants (1383). In subsequent years, the destruction was repaired, the city was rebuilt and strengthened.
During the long 36-year reign of Vasily Dmitrievich, relatively calm times came for Moscow. Real danger threatened it only once during this period, in 1408, when the army of the temnik of the Golden Horde, Edigei, besieged Moscow, but failed to take it. The result of Vasily's reign was a new expansion of the lands subject to Moscow - the Nizhny Novgorod and Murom principalities and other lands were annexed to his possessions. At the end of the 14th - first years of the 15th century, Theophanes the Greek worked in Moscow, who ran his own workshop and carried out church and secular orders, painting princely towers and Kremlin cathedrals.
The second quarter of the 15th century became for Moscow a restless and destructive time of a great feudal war, from which Prince Vasily Vasilyevich the Dark (1425-1462, with interruptions) emerged victorious. Strengthening his power in subsequent years, Vasily eliminated most of the appanages within the growing Moscow principality and made a number of neighboring lands dependent on it. In 1439, the Moscow suburbs were burned by the Tatars of Ulu-Muhammad. In 1451, the Tatars of the Nogai prince Mazovsha appeared again under the walls of Moscow. In 1448, for the first time, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus' (with residence in Moscow) Jonah of Moscow was installed not by the Patriarch of Constantinople, but by a council of Russian bishops in Moscow, which marked the beginning of the independence of the Russian Church. After the fall of Constantinople (1453), the importance of Moscow as a religious center grew.
In 1488 there was a big fire in Moscow. In the late 1480s, construction of new brick walls and towers of the Kremlin began, led by Italian architects, and which have largely survived to this day.
Program of events for City Day 2021 in Moscow
Currently, city officials are closely monitoring the number of coronavirus cases. Based on these statistics, the final decision will be announced on whether the program for celebrating Moscow Day 2021 will be held offline, whether fireworks will be launched, or whether it will be canceled, as in 2020.
Despite the fact that Muscovites and guests of the capital are looking forward to the festive events, in accordance with the words of the mayor of Moscow, the health of citizens remains a priority. If the holiday is still held in the classic offline mode, the most spectacular program will be on the following sites:
- VDNH;
- Tverskaya;
- Arbat;
- Victory Park;
- Flower Boulevard;
- Sokolniki;
- Hermitage Garden;
- "Zaryadye"
- Gorky Park.
Events are also usually organized in the Tsaritsyno and Vorontsov estates, Izmailovsky Park, Kuzminki-Lublino Museum-Reserve, as well as other recreation areas. However, to visit most of them, you will need to pre-register. However, online programs are organized in cultural spaces, as well as in museums, in any case.
On a note!
Regardless of the restrictions, the official part must still take place. It will begin with the Moscow anthem, as well as a ceremony on Red Square. Everyone will be able to watch the broadcast of this part of the city day celebration.
Where to go on City Day in Moscow
Some time ago, it was not yet known whether events would be held to coincide with the date of City Day celebrations in Moscow 2021. However, now virtually no one has any doubts that they will still celebrate the 874th anniversary of the capital.
These 2 days are always distinguished by the scope of celebrations, so it is worth making a list of places, events and activities where you would like to visit. On City Day there are many museums and exhibition halls that open their doors to everyone, admission is free. There are also other options for both free and paid entertainment dedicated to the celebration of the 874th anniversary of Moscow.
