Interesting Facts

  • Industrial metal mining is carried out from ore, which consists of minerals and their mixtures. The most valuable are oxide and sulfide ores. To extract metal from ore, chemical reduction reactions with carbon, active metals and hydrogen are used. Direct electric current is also used.
  • Ferrous metallurgy is the production of alloys that include iron, cast iron, steel, chromium, and manganese. Non-ferrous metallurgy is the beneficiation of ores and the smelting of alloys from copper, lead, zinc, tin, nickel, aluminum, magnesium, titanium.
  • Only 7% of titanium mined in the world is used in the engineering industry. 13% goes to paper production, 20% to plastic production and 60% is used in the paint and varnish industry.
  • Over the history of mankind, about 165 thousand tons of gold have been mined. Half of this amount was produced in South Africa.
  • Russia is in 5th place in terms of production volumes of the metallurgical industry.
  • All Olympic medals are made of silver. They are coated with a thin layer of gold, which makes up about 1% of the weight of the medal.

Who's celebrating?

Metallurgy refers to a type of human activity whose historical roots go back centuries. Archaeological finds confirm that processing of such material occurred as early as the 5th century BC.

Metal BC

And with the beginning of the Iron Age, humanity entered a new stage of development, receiving material that entered all spheres of human activity. The metallurgical industry boasts unique developments and innovations, which made it possible to move away from working with metal in forges and create unique plants with electric arc steel-smelting furnaces and electronic process control principles.

But, nevertheless, the professions of blast furnace and steelmakers, foundry and rolling workers, pourers and blacksmiths, heaters remain in demand and respected.

An important link in the production cycle is the mining industry, where, thanks to the work of miners and fuses, operators of combines and drilling stations, raw materials for metallurgical enterprises are extracted.

Toasts

“Happy Metallurgist Day. I wish your life to be a reliable, durable, strong alloy of love, good luck, happiness and prosperity. “I also want to wish you great strength, impeccable health and supreme skill in work, as well as pleasant events, joyful meetings and happy smiles in every day of your life.”

“Who proves by their own example day after day that real heroes live and prosper in our country and in our families? Of course, these are our metallurgical industry workers. Congratulations, creators of steel rods, pipes, ropes, housings, cast products. May the fire of love, fidelity, and happiness always shine in your eyes!

“Metallurgist is the most difficult profession for men. Today, on your professional holiday, I congratulate everyone who welds steel and cast iron, everyone who is not afraid of hard work in the hot mouths of furnaces! Be happy and satisfied with life even on the busiest days, don’t worry and let your home be full of love!

The history of the emergence of Metallurgist Day

Interestingly, the status of Metallurgist Day was established by decrees in 1980 and 1988. It became established in the calendar after the collapse of the USSR in all countries that were previously members of it.

This celebration is especially bright in cities with well-developed metallurgy. These include Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk. Metallurgy has long been a significant contribution to the state budget, and professions related to this activity are still in demand and well paid.

How to congratulate and what to give a metallurgist

Metal gift

Considering that in many families entire dynasties work in metallurgy, the holiday often becomes a family holiday, where all generations gather with wives, husbands and children. And if friends and colleagues join them, then it turns out to be a real celebration or a kind of off-site corporate event with families. Many people prefer to go out into nature, because the date of the celebration always falls at the end of July.

To give the holiday a special flavor, and not turn it into a get-together for an occasion, take the preparation of the program seriously. Here funny toasts, skits, competitions and congratulations will come to the rescue.

Competitions

Associations Two teams with the same number of participants take part in the competition. The presenter gives them a sheet of paper on which various categories are written: industry, economics, metallurgy, etc. The presenter guesses a letter of the alphabet, and the participants must write as many words as possible that are associated with the guessed categories within the allotted amount of time. The team with the most correct answers wins.

Hot shop Participants of the competition are blindfolded with tight bandages. They put thick oven mitts on their hands. Blindly, the contestants must feel and guess the objects laid out in front of them: a wrench, scissors, a bolt, a screwdriver, a caliper, etc. The participant with the largest number of correct answers wins.

Blacksmith For the competition, you need to prepare the props in advance: a large number of balloons and tape. Participants in the competition are asked to “forge” figures from the proposed material: a bicycle, a castle, a submarine, etc. The most creative and dexterous participant wins.

Interesting things about metals and metallurgy

It would seem that man is designed in such a way that he is not capable of eating metal. However, this is precisely what the Frenchman Michel Lotito became famous for. At his performances, he shocked the audience by eating completely inedible things. Including metals and their alloys, of which there were a total of 8-9 tons. True, the exact figure has not been recorded anywhere.

  • Over the entire history of mining valuable metals, approximately 162 tons of gold were extracted from the bowels of the Earth; the value of this volume was estimated at 9 trillion. dollars. Meticulous scientists have calculated that if melted down, a huge golden cube with a side of 20 m would come out.
  • In the Land of the Rising Sun, in the city of Suva, they came up with the idea of extracting precious metal from... sewers. And more specifically, from the dry residue of sewage when it is burned. Such gold mining is feasible because factories there produce electronics, for which gold-containing alloys are often used.
  • Every 45 min. miners extract as much iron as precious gold has been found in the entire history of the existence of our race on the planet.
  • Pure gold is never used in gold jewelry. It is always an alloy with silver or copper, otherwise the jewelry would bend and break due to its softness.
  • In ancient times, Norwegians who smelted silver often got poisoned. They believed this was the revenge of the evil spirit of Kobold. Over time, scientists were able to explain this phenomenon. People were poisoned by arsenic oxides released when cobalt minerals were roasted.
  • For a long time there was a disdainful attitude towards platinum. It was valued even lower than silver and was called “silver”. And all because of refractoriness. For comparison: platinum is now 100 times more expensive than silver.

About the profession

Modern life is impossible without the use of artificial substances. They became the foundation of progress. One of the most popular materials are iron compounds. Extraction, processing of raw materials and production of the finished product have grown into a high-tech technology.

Industry specialists are engaged in the production of products based on iron compounds, and also provide work on the production of products and the supply of raw materials. They are representatives of one of the most important sectors of the economy. The financial prosperity of other areas of the country’s life largely depends on its well-being. Metallurgists produce structures for construction, the oil and gas sector, heavy engineering and many other areas of human activity.

To become involved in the profession, you must undergo training at a higher or secondary specialized educational institution. Graduates receive the right to occupy positions in accordance with their education. Work in workshops is classified as hazardous to health and requires strict safety measures.

Who's celebrating?

Metallurgists include representatives of various professions, such as:

  • steelworkers;
  • blacksmiths;
  • distributors;
  • foundry workers;
  • turners;
  • quality experts;
  • blast furnace workers;
  • welders;
  • fitters;
  • other professions.

It does not matter whether the industry belongs to non-ferrous or ferrous scrap. Each of the metallurgical industries deserves attention and reverent attitude.

Representatives of the mining industry, who are engaged in the extraction of ore from the bowels of the earth, also consider this holiday theirs. All of these professions rely on the hard work of skilled workers. Thanks to such people, it was possible to restore the country after the Great Patriotic War. And today, most of the income and vitality of the country's economy depends on the labor of ordinary miners and metallurgists.
