Today, builders not only erect new buildings, but also engage in equally important work - the reconstruction of old houses in need of repair. From year to year, the demand for construction services is growing, and the construction industry is developing.

Today, in Russia and many other post-Soviet countries, the already great variety of organizations providing a huge variety of high-quality construction services is increasing.

Each of these companies strives to use the latest innovations in the construction industry, to comprehend the most creative and original ideas and unique technologies.

All this ensures the safety of objects constantly under construction and the opportunity for our descendants to turn to the culture and way of life of our time.

It is not for nothing that a holiday dedicated to these hardworking and gifted people is celebrated every year. Everyone who is involved in the creation of construction projects, their direct construction, restoration, repair and maintenance, as well as relatives and friends who are not indifferent to this celebration can touch this holiday.

In addition to architects, designers, roofers, painters, installers, painters, concrete workers and plasterers, this date is also celebrated by workers from other industries working in construction companies.

As well as students, graduates and teachers of construction colleges and universities. How did this wonderful holiday come about?

Traditions

On this day, congratulations are accepted by everyone involved in construction. At the festive table there are toasts, the clinking of glasses, wishes for health and success in responsible work. The country's top officials make statements and speeches about the achievements, problems and objectives of the construction industry. The best workers are awarded with diplomas, medals, and valuable gifts.

Television and radio programs broadcast about the history of the creation of important structures. The commissioning of buildings, parks, fountains, road junctions, and bridges is usually timed to coincide with the celebrations. Cultural institutions host concerts of creative groups with song and dance performances.

On Builder's Day, traditional initiations into the profession are held. Newcomers to this industry are presented with bread and salt. This treat symbolizes the “pound of salt” that needs to be eaten in order to master the profession. Then young professionals are asked to hold their hands over the fire to feel how “hot” the chosen job will be. After this, construction helmets are put on the newcomers’ heads and they take a special oath.

How Builder's Day is celebrated these days

As with any other professional holiday, Builder's Day in 2021 is primarily celebrated within the teams themselves. As a rule, a small festive feast is organized on Friday evening after work.

On the eve of the holiday or on the day itself, large construction organizations and trusts organize large-scale celebrations. Artists are invited to perform at them. During holidays, the best employees of the enterprise are usually awarded and rewarded, etc.

This holiday is truly massive. Construction in modern Russia is approximately 3% of GDP, which is quite a lot. This industry employs up to 7 million people. Despite the fact that the construction boom in the country has slowed down a little, quite a lot of projects are still being built, mainly residential apartment buildings.

Of course, professionals in this industry can also be congratulated on Builder’s Day on August 12 by those who are not related to it. Relatives or friends, neighbors or just acquaintances congratulate those who are involved in the annual holiday of all builders on their day.

Signs and construction superstitions

Builders are superstitious people; when they build a house, masons or installers place coins in the corners. Also, when they lay out the fireplace, they also put in coins for good luck and prosperity for the future owners. Of course, a cat for a housewarming party, where would we be without it? What were the signs before? It turns out there are a lot of them, some predictable, and some surprising...

It was believed that there would be good luck in everything if you started building a log house during Lent (early spring) and on the new moon. It’s a good sign if the construction of the log house takes Trinity on time.

If you start building a log house on a day dedicated to a martyr, you will not complete the construction of the log house, but if you start building a log house on a day dedicated to the memory of the saints, everything will be fine.

There were also many beliefs regarding the beginning of the construction of a log house:

  • Construction of the log house should begin only on Tuesday or Thursday.
  • Stoves should be placed under the new moon (they will be warmer), but in no case on the waning moon;
  • If the first foundation of a house under construction is laid by a maiden in that house, it will always be warm in winter;
  • The first two beams of the frame must be laid along the house, and then across it (otherwise the life will be transverse);
  • Coniferous branches should be placed at the base of the house (to protect it from lightning);
  • In the front corner, on the first masonry, you need to put money (for wealth in the new house), wool (for warmth), incense (for holiness and so that the brownie does not joke);
  • Until the first crown is laid, the craftsmen should not leave the place of work, they should not stick an ax into a log or hit it with a butt;
  • If, when cutting the embryonic crown, the first chip flies inside the quadrangle, then all kinds of profit, luck and prosperity will come to the house. All the chips obtained when cutting the first crown must be collected in the middle of the quadrangle (so that what is happening outside is known in the house, but so that what is happening at home is not known on the street).
  • When building a log house, it was forbidden to place the pillars with the butt up (there will be no happiness). The floor in the house was laid only lengthwise, towards the threshold (if it was laid differently, there would be no happiness in the house).
  • If the carpenters and stove maker are poorly treated, then living in the house will be bad.
  • The house did not have windows or gates facing north.
  • When they installed the central beam on which the ceiling is laid, they baked pies and treated the carpenters to drinks.
  • Upon completion of the construction of the log house of a wooden house, the owner threw a consecrated egg across the house, which had to be immediately buried at the site of its fall; it was believed that after this ritual, the wind would not tear off the roof.
  • The new house was necessarily blessed by the priest, or at least every corner of the house was sprinkled with holy water from the church.
  • Before moving into a new house, a cat or rooster was allowed to spend the night in it (protecting the house from the entry of evil spirits, the animal will show in the morning how the owners will live here: if the cat or rooster is cheerful, they will heal well, if not, they will heal poorly).
  • It is best to move into a new house on some holiday, and best of all at dawn. It was impossible to move at sunset. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are considered unlucky days for moving. It is best to enter a new home during the full moon.
  • Traditionally, people entered the house for the first time with bread and salt. In addition, it was believed that all success in a new house would be greatly helped if, on the day of moving, exactly those objects for which the building was built were placed there, and no extraneous objects were allowed.
  • According to popular belief, the housewarming party itself should not be held on the actual day of relocation; you must wait at least three days.

Congratulations on Builder's Day

history of the holiday

The builders owe their professional triumph to the Zhigulevskaya hydroelectric power station and its creators, because it was its construction that Nikita Sergeevich Khrushchev, who at that time held the position of General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, was delighted with. The consequence of this was the publication of a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Union, which marked the beginning of this significant holiday.

On August 12, 1956, builders of the Soviet Union celebrated their professional day for the first time, and to this day in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, the second Sunday of the month of August of every year is dedicated to construction masters.

However, the grandeur of the constructed Zhigulevskaya HPP is not the only prerequisite for celebrating Builder's Day.

In the early 50s of the last century, in all corners of the USSR, the most pressing problem was providing residents of the state with their own housing.

The statistics of that time reflect the terrifying situation that developed at that time: a third of the entire population had the opportunity to live only in dormitories and communal apartments.

Therefore, plans to correct the current situation were truly colossal: everyone was promised a new separate place of residence within 1980.

In the implementation of these grandiose plans, the builders of the Soviet Union had to play the most important role, which is why they deserved their professional holiday.

The very first builder's day was carefully planned and then subjected to extensive preparation. After all, that day the government wanted to express its respect and concern for the workers in the construction industry and highlight their authority and significance in the life of the entire USSR.

This day was widely publicized, congratulations were continuously and with lightning speed scattered throughout the Union on radio and television, which could not but make every builder proud of the results of his invaluable work, his talented and hardworking colleagues and his grateful country.

The grandeur and scope of that day were long imprinted in the memory of all the people who witnessed it.

Numerous celebrations, reports, concerts and exhibitions dedicated to the art of construction were held throughout the country.

The most significant event of that day is considered to be a meeting of builders, which took place in the Moscow Gorky Park of Culture and Leisure, where a huge number of caring and deeply interested people gathered.

At that moment, the builders, who are considered the creators of the unique ensemble of buildings of Moscow State University, the Lenin Stadium and entire blocks of residential premises, discussed plans and their decisions for the further construction of residential buildings.

On the eve of the first builders' holiday, a phenomenon called social competition arose, thanks to which the Soviet Union acquired many high-quality construction projects that have survived to this day.

One of these objects is the popular Luzhniki Stadium, which was built on the first anniversary of Builder's Day in 1956.

This useful tradition has not lost its relevance in our time, and every year on the eve of Builder’s Day, new houses, bridges, hospitals, schools and other necessary and in-demand facilities are commissioned.

A striking example of the implementation of this tradition is the unsurpassed Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which was created over five long years and was reproduced in 2000 for the 45th anniversary of the Builders' Day.
