Bust of Samantha Fox and smile of Yura Shatunov: What posters hung on the walls of Soviet apartments

In the 90s, posters with your favorite musicians and movie characters became a real mainstream. Even decades later, this hobby has not died, although it has become no longer as popular as before.

At the end of the last century, almost every apartment was hung with photographs recognizable throughout the world. Sometimes the amount of paper on the walls reached such a level that it seemed as if the person had hung new wallpaper... out of paper!

Nowadays this hobby can be called retro art. And it arose against the backdrop of the release of a huge number of Hollywood films. In addition, it was during that period that music changed beyond recognition, and many different directions and genres appeared. Thus, successful actors and musicians have become role models for the common man.

Modern apartments still display posters from that era. We will talk about some of them in more detail in this article.

Poster for the film "Rocky" (1976) featuring Sylvester Stallone

“Rocky” is a film by John Avildsen, released in 1976. The main roles were played by Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire, who performed well in the first two parts of The Godfather. This is a sports drama about an amateur boxer, played by Stallone. Rocky Balboa works as a bouncer and does not shine with intelligence. But in his free time he trains and fights. Boxing is a hobby in his life, and working as a bouncer for loan shark Tony Gazzo brings him a stable income. One day, a world boxing champion arrives in Philadelphia for another fight. But suddenly his opponent gets injured, and the champion decides to replace him with someone new to create a huge promotion. This newcomer turns out to be Rocky Balboa, who was given the nickname “Italian Stallion” before the fight.

At this very time, the boxer’s thoughts are not so much the upcoming fight as his passion for one shy girl who works in a pet store, where Rocky often goes. Adrian Pennino is his friend's younger sister. After many unsuccessful attempts, Rocky finally gets the girl's attention, and she agrees to go on a date with him. At the same time, Balboa is training intensively under the guidance of a retired boxer, so as not to lose face in the ring in a few days.

As a result, Rocky Balboa showed himself worthy in the fight with the world champion, who managed to win only on points. But Rocky was not very upset about this outcome, because all this time he was supported by his beloved girl.

Poster for the film "Invasion USA" (1985) with Chuck Norris

Joseph Zito's action film starring Chuck Norris begins with Cuban illegal immigrants sailing by boat to the shores of the United States. Refugees are welcomed, inviting them to step onto the “shore of freedom.” However, such a greeting does not last long, since the inhabitants of Cuba who have not yet managed to go ashore are shot by people who came from nowhere. Then the villains take several bags of cocaine from a hiding place in their boat.

The boat with the dead bodies is found by US authorities. An investigation begins. Meanwhile, the militants sell drugs and receive weapons for this. The authorities turn to a former CIA agent, played by Chuck Norris, for help. But he refuses, despite the fact that he has personal scores with Rostov, the leader of the bandits. Rostov also wants to get even with Khantor, but unable to reach him, he kills his friend. A former CIA agent finds out about this and changes his attitude to the matter.

Meanwhile, in large US cities, militants are sowing chaos by shooting innocent citizens, often dressed in military or police uniforms. Now all this disgrace is opposed by Hunter, who even manages to prevent an attack on a supermarket and destroy an entire group of militants. Later, when the country is already in a state of martial law, Hunter manages to kill one of the most influential people in Rostov. As a result, the finale of the film turns into an individual confrontation between Hunter and Rostov, in which Hunter manages to destroy his enemy with a direct hit from a grenade launcher.

Poster for the film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger

Many movie fans call the second part of "Terminator" the best film in the history of cinema. First of all, what is striking about this film is its crazy budget for that time - more than 100 million dollars. In other words, the film paid off in spades. There have already been a lot of Terminator films, but James Cameron's Judgment Day is considered a classic.

Poster for the film “Bloodsport” (1988) with Jean-Claude Van Damme

New Arnolt's martial arts film was originally planned as a biography of Frank Dukes, but after the film's release the veracity of this statement began to be actively disputed.

So, Dukes arrives in Hong Kong to take part in the Kumite Championship, where his opponents will be the best fighters from all over the world. Frank Duke confidently crushes all opponents and reaches the finals of the tournament. In the final, he defeats Chon Lee, who tried to win by hook or by crook. Thus, Frank Dukes becomes the first kumite champion from the west.

Despite the mostly unfavorable assessments of film critics, “Bloodsport” appealed to domestic audiences, as evidenced by numerous posters for this film, popular among young people in the 90s.

How to dress?

By and large, the main atmosphere of the holiday will be created by the guests who will prepare the appropriate outfits. Girls wear bright leggings, T-shirts, bright skirts, well, if you really want to create an atmosphere, then find that same top with the Titanic.

Party in 90s style

Did you spend your childhood in the 90s? Or do you want to go the party route of shoelaces? Then a 90s style party is for you!

It seems like the nineties ended just yesterday, but many years have already passed. This time is remembered with sweet longing and nostalgia for the old days. A party in the style of the 90s is a time machine that will take guests back to youth, adolescence, and for some, to childhood. And for this machine to work one hundred percent, you need to think through all the moments of the holiday in accordance with the specifics of the 90s.

Choosing a venue for a party

Of course, a party at home is only recommended if you have excellent relations with your neighbors and they are willing to tolerate an evening of loud music, accompanied by noise, shouting and stomping. Unfortunately, neighbors so loyal to parties are rare, which means you need to find a more spacious place (in all respects). We offer the following options:

  1. If you are going to have a holiday with friends in the summer, why not go with the whole group to nature? This is very convenient, fortunately, today is no longer the nineties, which means you can’t take anything other than a washing machine with you on the road. A good car with climate control allows you to stay cool in extreme heat, and drinks in the car refrigerator will refresh any of your friends. Delicious treats in a camp basket, spinning rods in the trunk, beach umbrellas, cozy tents will turn your 90s-style party into an unforgettable event.
  2. If nature doesn’t inspire you for a “wild holiday” or the weather doesn’t allow it, go to a country complex. There you will find all the amenities for a comfortable stay.
  3. The ideal choice for a party is a cottage or a country house. This is where you can have fun from the heart and no evil neighbors banging a mop on the ceiling with hatred! Here you can turn on the music louder, fry a barbecue, and walk until the morning.
  4. And finally, another completely acceptable option is some suitable establishment: bar, club, cafe. There are undoubtedly some advantages here, and very tempting ones. For example, there is no need for cooking, decorating the room, subsequent cleaning, washing dishes and other burdensome activities.

Once you decide on the venue, it’s time to move on to the next stage of preparation.

The evening begins with an invitation

Chewing gum with bright candy wrappers was very popular in the 90s. Who hasn't collected these treasures? Therefore, you can use gum wrappers “Love is...?”, “Turbo” as the basis for the invitation.

And back in those days, everyone listened to cassettes. A case from such an artifact can serve as an excellent basis for an invitation to a party.

Print out a picture of some famous 90s band, write the invitation text on a blank side of the paper, and deliver the finished ticket to your friends. They will probably be pleased.

To simplify your task and give you a vector for creativity, we found several original design examples:

You can find even more interesting examples on the Internet.

Transport for delivering guests

It is better to think about this issue in advance. It would be nice if you found a car not only to transport guests home, but also to the event itself. Since your party is themed, it means that the car must correspond to the intended idea. In those years, the VAZ-2109 (nine), Mersedes Gelendwagen (Gelik), BMW E-38 7 series (Boomer) and others were very popular.

Try to have one of these cars come for your friends. They will be very pleased!

We welcome guests

To work through the issue of meeting invitees, answer yourself a few questions:

  1. Will you be doing this yourself?
  2. If yes, then in what form?
  3. Do you need to prepare some kind of solemn speech or will you do without it?
  4. Would you like to invite a presenter for this purpose?
  5. How do you see all this for yourself?

If you decide to use the services of a holiday agency, you need to carefully formulate all your wishes and outline them in detail to the person who will do it. Do you want to do it yourself? Imagine a “outfit” like the one Foma had from the TV series “Fizruk”. This is, of course, the male version. There is more choice for women. Just flip through a 90s fashion magazine and you're sure to find a lot of different outfits.

How to Dress for a 90's Party

Outfits for girls

Several fashion trends that were popular at that time allow you to choose an outfit to suit your taste. These are wide raver pants with acid stripes on the sides, high platform shoes. Girls wore bright leggings or high-waisted jeans, wide blouses with belts. Miniskirts, fishnet tights and sequined tunics were also in demand.

An interesting “schoolgirl” outfit consisting of denim overalls or a skirt, golf and a plaid shirt will also fit the theme. To complete the look, add a pair of ponytails.

Another win-win option is a shiny skirt with a blouse or a dress of the same type.

The main condition is increased brightness, including in cosmetics. No need to skimp on hairspray, and be sure to curl your bangs. For guys, a good option would be a crimson jacket, a tracksuit and a gold chain, of course, thicker.

Outfits for guys

Men will look stylish in tracksuits or jeans, shirts and crimson jackets. The look will be completed with dark “gangster” glasses and a leather jacket.

And you can also wear rustling sweatpants, a black T-shirt, and white sneakers. Here's a guy from the 90s!

90's disco vibe

Hands Up, Ivanushki Int., Freestyle, Lada Dance, Hi-Fi, Tattoo, Decl - the list of groups that were popular in those days is very wide, so creating a fairly large playlist for every taste will not be difficult. Most of the song lyrics will come to mind spontaneously, so everyone will want to sing and dance. By the way, we can please fans of rock music and include hits from Nautilus and Nirvana in the list.

Here are just a few striking examples to create the right mood in Russian:

Inveterate Scoundrels - Love Me

Virus - Well, where are your pens?

Disco accident - Come on accident

Playlist of Russian dance songs of the 90s

The best dance hits from the gurus of the 90s: Disco Crash, Hands Up, Demo, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Virus, Strelki, Ivanushki International.

And these are the well-known foreign hits for the sausage crowd:

Scooter - Fire

Sash - Ecuador

Ace of base - All that she wants

It is mandatory to have a cassette recorder and light music in the hall. The walls can be decorated with rare posters of famous bands of that time. And what celebration in those days could not be complete without a carpet on the wall!

You can get a VCR and play clips from those years in the background. What else? A huge number of accessories that filled life in the 90s! Collages will tell you about this best:

Menu “Born from the 90s”

Olivier, herring under a fur coat - the names alone make your mouth water. Make more salads and hot dishes. Sandwiches with caviar, cheese and cucumbers will fit perfectly into the party atmosphere. In general, the table should be rich.

For sweets, you can prepare nuts with boiled condensed milk, Skittles candies, toffees, Snickers, Bounty, Mars chocolate. Do you remember “Invite – just add water”? This is the drink you can pamper your guests with.

90's Entertainment

Most young people in the nineties “had a blast” at discos in school gyms. Therefore, the dance part of the program is a prerequisite for a successful return to the past. You can place school chairs or benches along the edges of the dance floor.

Karaoke with songs from the 90s will cause delight; you can organize a competition for the best performance, dress up as artists of those years, and try to repeat the success of famous musical teams.

A game of “Fanta” is simply an obligatory attribute of such an evening. For it, you will need to collect something small from each guest as a phantom (scarf, watch, bracelet), then it is collectively decided what the next player will do, and when an action like “Run out onto the porch of the restaurant and shout “Viva, the nineties!” will be selected by the task, you need to pull out one item from the general pile of forfeits. The one who owns it and will carry out what was invented.

Party in the style of 90 contests

Where would we be without them!? To be 100% prepared for the party and create a great atmosphere, don’t forget to spice up your event with competitions. To do this, use our selection of competitions, games, sweepstakes and quizzes that are perfect for any party.

.

I also remember the mass craze for the Dandy consoles. Therefore, playing for several people, for example, in “Mario”, is very relevant.

Compete in blowing bubble gum bubbles to see who has the most.

Play the famous “Guess the Melody” game, arrange a quiz on knowledge of the era of the nineties, TV series of that time, music. You can invite all guests to fill out a questionnaire, remember, which was written by hand in notebooks, with questions from the category “Who do you love most?”

The nineties left many memories in people's memories, and if you skillfully use this knowledge and reproduce them with precision, you will get an amazing party that will help you go back in time and remember your youth with the fiery hits of yesteryear.

Poster for the film "Rambo 3" featuring the main character Sylvester Stallone

This film about the adventures of Rambo was criticized, however, the movie character was loved by the audience, and the number of different posters and posters with his image only confirm this. In terms of criticism, Sylvester Stallone was nominated for a Golden Raspberry as Worst Actor. In addition, the film has been repeatedly criticized for its strong anti-Soviet message, as well as an abundance of technical and historical mistakes.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a rare exception for an action hero: he could be found in both boys' and girls' rooms

The carpets on the walls are for sound insulation, and the posters... Probably, after all, for beauty, to at least somehow decorate your apartment or your former children's, and then teenage, corner. But what kind of posters hung on the walls of the average resident of the Soviet Union or the first years after the collapse of the USSR, we decided to ask listeners of the “Deja Vu” program on Radio “Komsomolskaya Pravda” (97.2 fm).

Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Norris

The era of video salons gave the younger generation new heroes. Arnold from the movie “Commando” looked sternly from someone’s wall, hung with weapons like a Christmas tree. Or the same Schwarzenegger, but in dark glasses, a leather jacket and the ominous inscription “Terminator” below.

Some preferred Marrion Cobretti - or simply Cobra - Sylvester Stallone's character. Although many had Stallone with a machine gun at the ready, with a distorted face from “Rambo 2” or on a horse with a grenade launcher on his back with the accompanying inscription “Rambo in Afghanistan” - “Rambo in Afghanistan”.

The era of video salons gave the younger generation new heroes

Van Damme, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan

Separate posters were dedicated to martial arts and movie characters, where weapons were completely replaced by legs and arms. Beyond competition, of course, was Bruce Lee. And although during his short life he starred in only five films, where he played the main roles, in these films one could find so many impressive shots - you could hang the whole room. Here is Bruce in a crown stance and with four bloody stripes on his chest. Here with nunchucks. Here, against the backdrop of the Colosseum, stands opposite Chuck Norris. Here comes Bruce's jump. There were a huge number of options with his images - just choose.

The posters with Sho Kosugi were of the same type - they depicted a ninja wrapped from head to toe in black. Sometimes, for the sake of liveliness, shurikens, katanas and the already mentioned nunchucks were added as design elements.

Brussels-born Jean-Claude Van Damme is a rare exception for an action hero: he could be found in both boys' and girls' rooms. The boys usually chose photos where Van Damme showed off his famous stretch marks, while the girls had a smiling Jean-Claude showing off his impressive biceps.

Sabrina or Sandra

Western singers also often decorated Soviet apartments. And if the ex-soloist of “Arabesques” Sandra or the German CC Ketch got on the walls thanks to the musical taste of the owner or hostess, then Samantha Fox and Sabrina were chosen solely because of their spectacular forms. Some people had to take very candid photos with breasts showing through a wet T-shirt from the trash can, where a poster with the word “Shame!” sent by mom. Therefore, the boys most often chose a neutral option - either a bikini or an unbuttoned shirt on the model.

Everyone could choose a poster to their liking. And if no one liked it, you could hang reproductions of paintings by famous artists from the magazine. Photo: twitter.com/samfoxcom

Boy bands

“Tender May”, “The Little Prince”, “Commissar” - these are ours. Take That, New Kids on the Block, East17, Backstreet Boys, Boyzone - these are foreign ones. All this is a typical decoration of the walls of the room in which the girl grew up.

Young boys, smiling with white teeth, looked invitingly from the walls. Those who preferred import substitution received Yura Shatunov.

Japanese women in bikinis

Almost every second person in our impromptu survey remembered posters with a Japanese-Korean woman in a bikini. Unknown models in swimsuits stood against the backdrop of the sea, palm trees, azure sky and... that's it. They just stood there. Nobody remembered where such posters came from: “They bought it somewhere.”

Nobody remembers where these posters came from.

AND

- Foreign film stars - Belmondo, Delon, Celentano.

— Signs “taken” from the street: “There is no way out,” “Don’t get in, he’ll kill you,” “Take bread in moderation for lunch.”

— Advertising posters hung, as a rule, not in apartments, but in enterprises - “Fly with Aeroflot planes,” “Slava watches,” etc.
