Teacher's Day 2021: what date is celebrated in Russia, history and traditions

The role of teachers in the life of every person cannot be overestimated. From an early age, teachers share more than just knowledge with students. They teach you to think, be kind, honest and responsive, and achieve your goals. Thanks to the hard work of their mentors, the children are drawn to new knowledge, move forward, and discover their talents and abilities. Every year, education in Russia gets better and gives children the opportunity to get the desired specialty in order to realize themselves in later life. Each educational institution celebrates Teacher's Day every year, and in 2021 in Russia it will be celebrated traditionally on October 5.

Traditions

Students and their parents congratulate teachers on their professional holiday, wish them health and success in their hard work, and present bouquets of flowers and gifts. Schools host festive assemblies and performances by creative groups with song and dance numbers. Exhibitions of students' works are held, and wall newspapers are posted. Some schools organize Self-Government Day, when students lead lessons.

In cultural institutions, the management of the Ministry of Education congratulates teachers, rewards the best employees and winners of the “Teacher of the Year” competition with certificates, medals, and valuable gifts. Teachers with more than 15 years of experience who have made a significant contribution to the education of children receive the title “Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation.” The top officials of the state give speeches of gratitude, mention the role of this profession in the development of society, and note the achievements and difficulties of the education system.

On Teacher's Day, colleagues organize feasts. The educational process is reduced or completely devoted to special events.

October 5 - Teacher's Day in Russia and the world

The date October 5th was set by UNESCO. In some post-Soviet countries - Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Ukraine - Teacher's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.

Is Teacher's Day a day off in Russia or not?

Unfortunately for many teachers who would prefer a day of rest instead of pictures, poems and songs, October 5 is not a day off in Russia. This is a regular working day, although celebrated in every school.

Sometimes, by decision of management, this day is made “short”, but it is not a day off. At least in Russia. And, for example, in Uzbekistan, Teacher’s Day is a day off, however, it is celebrated on October 1st.

How is Teacher's Day going?

On this day, as a rule, students and their parents prepare a festive concert. A script is drawn up in advance according to which the solemn event will take place. Children learn poems and songs, prepare pictures for the holiday wall newspaper, and create drawings in advance that they present to teachers. Some take the script for Teacher's Day from ready-made collections, and the most active parent committees independently develop such scripts. Quite a lot of songs and poems dedicated to teachers have also been created. Often, October 5 is designated as self-government day in schools.

Why Teacher's Day is celebrated on October 5

It was on this day, October 5, 1966, that an intergovernmental conference on the status of teachers took place in Paris. At the same time, the most important document “Recommendations concerning the status of teachers” was signed. It was signed by UNESCO and the International Labor Organization.

This holiday was established in 1994, at the same time in Russia, for the first time, Teacher’s Day was celebrated on this day. However, a holiday dedicated to the teaching profession existed in the USSR long before that. His date was “floating” - the first Sunday in October; accordingly, Teacher’s Day always fell on a day off and was celebrated differently.

However, not all over the world the celebration of Teacher's Day falls on October 5th.

In Albania, for example, it coincides with International Women's Day and is celebrated on March 8th. In Argentina, it is celebrated on September 11, the day of the death of the country's outstanding teacher and modernizer Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. In China - September 28, the birthday of the outstanding thinker Confucius.

The role of the teacher in shaping society

The teacher not only instills in children basic knowledge that they will use throughout their lives - he educates them, along with the family, shaping their future personality. School plays a huge role in a child’s life, and a good teacher is able to influence the student’s future, not only give him a love for his subject, but also give him an idea of what path in life is best for the student to choose. Whether a child wants to go to college or vocational school after nine grades, whether he chooses the path of a physicist, historian, biologist - all this largely depends on what kind of teachers raise him in high school.

Songs and poems by Soviet classics dedicated to teachers are still relevant today and are still often heard at school concerts on Teacher's Day.

Story

Teacher's Day was first established by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on September 29, 1965. It was celebrated on the first Sunday in October. Since 1994, Russia has been celebrating the holiday on October 5, in accordance with Decree of the President of the Russian Federation B. Yeltsin dated October 3, 1994 No. 1961.

Working as a teacher in Russia

The work of a teacher is intense and difficult; people who devote themselves to school certainly deserve our kind words and attentive attitude towards themselves. Not only on Teacher's Day 2021, but on all other days of the year too. To be able to prove yourself in this profession requires great dedication and great patience. In addition, the teacher must devote a lot of time to constant self-improvement; he must not only perfectly know the subject he teaches, but also be able to explain it to his students in a way that is intelligible and interesting. In addition, a bad teacher is one who is interested in his students only during the lesson; a good teacher must know the family situation, interests and capabilities of his students, be strict, but always fair.

Perhaps one of the main qualities of a real teacher is his goodwill. After all, the student might not have learned his lesson simply because he did not understand something or missed something. In this case, it is important not just to evaluate his knowledge, but to find out what exactly remains unclear and try to eliminate this gap through joint efforts. The teacher's job is to teach, not to give a bad grade.

Each child is unique, which means they may require an individual approach. Therefore, a teacher also has to be a good psychologist. By the way, communication with parents often requires the same. A bad grade from a student is often a bad grade from the teacher himself, and a real teacher understands this well. In addition, a teacher needs such qualities as politeness, accuracy, attentiveness, the ability to take on certain obligations in relation to his students, as well as responsibility.

Students always come to class with a good teacher with great desire. They are never bored in his lessons. Creativity, resourcefulness, tact, flexibility, tolerance - all this also distinguishes a truly good teacher from the rest of his colleagues.

But, of course, the most important quality of a teacher is love for children. If a person does not have this quality initially, he has nothing to do at school.

And, of course, one of the main qualities of a teacher is fair treatment of all students, his impartiality. Children are very sensitive to these qualities and subtly sense prejudiced attitudes towards themselves; they immediately lose interest in learning. But there is no greater pleasure than congratulating your favorite teacher on Teacher’s Day.

About the profession

Teachers educate and educate students, shape and change their personalities. They owe much to the successes and failures of their wards in their later lives.

To become a teacher, you must complete higher or secondary specialized pedagogical education. To do this, you need to master knowledge that is associated not only with specialized subjects, but also with educational activities.

The graduate must be diversified, strive for self-improvement, have empathy (the ability to feel in the place of another person), reflection (awareness of one’s own thoughts and actions). The fundamental personal qualities of a teacher are goodwill, willingness to help and selflessness in work.

A teacher is a creative profession. It requires the ability to find unique approaches to each student, regardless of his characteristics, to achieve understanding of the material and logical thinking.

History and traditions of the holiday

The teaching profession has a long history. As a matter of fact, it originates at the dawn of human development, as soon as our ancestors developed the first fixed skills. After all, someone had to teach them to growing youth? It was thanks to the first teachers that old skills were preserved, developed and new ones appeared.

However, the very first mention of a teacher can be found in the ancient Chinese philosopher and thinker Confucius. He said that the task of teachers is to reveal new knowledge to students. In Ancient Greece there were already real schools in which not only young people, but also adults studied.

In the Middle Ages, schools and pedagogy developed under the wing of the church, where monks often acted as teachers. Then came the heyday of the Renaissance, when schools became elite closed institutions, often inaccessible to ordinary people. They provided separate education for girls and boys from noble families. The teachers taught good manners, reading, writing, and various languages - in general, everything that a noble person needed to know. But mere mortals were forced to remain without knowledge - after all, hiring teachers was an unaffordable luxury for them.

But already at the beginning of the 19th century, public free schools appeared in many countries, including Russia, the maintenance of which was assumed by the community or philanthropists. Then ordinary people could begin to learn to read and write. Teachers become one of the most respected people in society, and this attitude towards them continues to exist today. Don't forget to congratulate them on Teacher's Day 2021.

What to gift?

As a rule, teachers receive flowers, a sweet present and some general gift from the parent committee of the class for their holiday (not counting, of course, hand-made tokens from students). It is considered unethical to give a teacher items of clothing or perfume, as well as household appliances - the first may not be suitable, the second is too expensive a gift that will be inconvenient to accept. The best option is a certificate to a store: the teacher himself will be able to choose what he (she) likes. You can also donate something to the class: a projector, a printer, and so on.

Teacher's profession

Teaching is the oldest profession. This term itself comes from Ancient Greece, where teachers were people who were involved in children's education. At that time, such people were slaves who accompanied the little master to school, watched over him at home, and provided him with the necessary assistance.

The first schools arose in the Ancient East and were conventionally divided into three types: priestly, where religious ministers were trained, scribes, where future officials were taught, palace schools, where the children of the nobility went there. Education in these schools took place according to one of three systems - Spartan (the main thing is the military spirit), Athenian (diversified development) and Roman (synthesis of Spartan and Athenian). Schools began to exist because there was a need to transfer accumulated life experience. The word “school” itself also comes from ancient Greek. Interesting fact: their "schole" means leisure - the Greeks believed that the best relaxation was doing something.

Who is a teacher today? Someone who has certain professional knowledge and is willing to share it. Someone who loves children (this is an indispensable condition, unfortunately, often forgotten nowadays) and is sincerely interested in their lives. Who is patient, friendly, smart, persistent, capable of self-education. There are more than three million teachers in our country, half of them are school employees. At the same time, despite such a significant figure, the teaching profession is not considered prestigious: you need to work a lot, the work is hard, and the pay, unfortunately, is very small. This is why many who have received a pedagogical education never enter this field. By the way, an interesting observation: in ancient times, and even in the Middle Ages, teachers were mostly men. Now, for some reason, this profession has begun to be considered female.
