Thus, the game Crocodile and the example words for it will become not only a logical, but also a funny task.

Board games for parties, Board games for large groups, Board games with simple rules, Board games with words

Purpose of the game

  • Guess the hidden word.

Preparation

Before starting the game, prepare several cards with words. Each player can write one term on a card and place it in the game deck.

Progress of the game

One player stands in front of the other players and begins to guess the hidden word. The task of the rest is to name the concept as they imagined it.

You can give any definition, but for children you can simplify the task and give a riddle only for nouns in the nominative singular. The exception is those forms that do not have a singular number, for example: scissors, watches, trousers.

During the show, it is prohibited to make any sounds, move your mouth, or answer “yes” or “no” to the assumptions of other players. It is also forbidden to show your hands or draw in the air the letters that make up the word.

Guessers can ask clarifying questions and list all the options that come to mind.

A certain amount of time is given to solve each idea (set individually for each group of players). After this time, the word is considered undeciphered.

Tasks

For those who have been familiar with the game for a long time, there are no restrictions on the use of words - every concept, phenomenon and action can become a mystery.

For beginners, it is better to offer several topics to choose from:

  • Movies;
  • Famous people;
  • Animals, etc.
  • Fairy tale characters;
  • Proverbs and sayings;
  • Sport;
  • Professions;

Every man for himself

Select the player to show the word first, then draw a card from the deck, choose one of the words shown (it's best to start with the simple ones marked “+2”) and begin showing it to the other players using facial expressions, gestures and other body movements.

While you show the word, other players guess it by saying their options out loud. Once the correct option appears (matching the word you chose from the card drawn), your turn ends. You return to the other players and now guess with them, and the player who guessed your word takes a new card from the deck, selects one of the words and begins to reveal it.

Once you have guessed the word, keep the word card and don't let anyone look at it. Later, when you guess someone else's word and want to show it again, choose another word or phrase from your card. The winner of the game is the one who is the first to show all the words on the received card.

Team game

Individual play is good for the first acquaintance with “Crocodile”, but this game is truly revealed only when playing in a team. By playing team against team, you simply develop team spirit and learn to understand your teammates in one move. Only in team play: you will be able to keep score and use U cards that will help you and make life difficult for your opponents. If your company has more than six people, we recommend dividing into two, three or even four more or less equal teams.

Special gestures:

  1. First, the player shows with his fingers how many words have been placed.
  2. A cross with hands means “forget.”
  3. Circular movements of the hand or palm indicate the selection of synonyms; the answer is close.

Review

The game "Crocodile" is also known as "Associations", "Mime", "Blue Cow" or "American Student". The goal and objectives are to think of words and explain them to other players using gestures. Usually this is not fun, but it is very fun when the word or phrase is non-trivial or the conditions on the card limit the ways of transmitting information.

Why is it called that and where is the logic here? There are different versions of where the name came from. The main and most plausible one is theatrical. In theater universities there was an exercise for young actors - to show a phrase without words. And so that the task did not seem easy, they asked strange phrases. Including the “red crocodile”. Which was later shortened to simply "crocodile". And the entertainment went to the people.

The desktop version of the game appeared relatively recently as a project and “Mosigra”. The game received a material basis - cards with tasks and additional conditions imposed on the explainer.

On average, the game lasts from forty minutes to one and a half hours

, despite the fact that the time to guess each word is limited. The basic set is designed for players over 10 years old. The optimal number of participants is from 4 to 12 people.

The basic set is packaged in a cube box with a side of eleven centimeters. In addition to it, the game “Crocodile Big Party” and travel sets were also released: “Crocodile of all sorts”, “Crocodile of children’s lungs”, “Crocodile Cinema-Book”, “Crocodile Historically Interesting” and “Crocodile Around the World”.

Options

There are two varieties of this entertainment, which are equally successful. This is a team and individual game.

In the case of an individual ending, each participant is for himself. The “actor” takes one card and presents what is written on it, and the rest of the audience guesses.

In the team version, all participants are divided into two groups, and each group takes turns showing and guessing the word.

Zoo

Each person takes turns pulling out a card from the box on which it is written which animal he should portray, and the group must guess which animal he is depicting.

Emotions and feelings

Players take turns drawing cards with different emotions and feelings (joy, sadness, boredom, surprise, disappointment, etc.). Each player has two minutes to express the emotions they feel.

Catchphrases

Assignment: Catch expressions known from films are written on a piece of paper. The players must introduce them to their team without words, only through pantomime. The team that completes the task faster wins.

Mute poet

Assignment: They have a poem written on a piece of paper, they read it out loud, then use facial expressions and gestures to show the words to their team so that the team can quickly guess them.

Famous personality

Prepare cards with celebrity names in advance, fold them and put them in a hat. The essence of the game: Players take cards out of a hat, read the name of the celebrity and try to imagine her without words (with gestures, facial expressions). The one who guessed right takes a card from the hat and imitates the celebrity. You can award a point for each guess and give the winner a prize at the end of the game.

Make up a song

Print out the lyrics to the songs you all know in advance, fold them up and put them in a bag. Then choose the first player to be the leader. He must take the song out of the bag and read the lyrics to himself, using pantomime so that the players understand the meaning of each line. The one who guessed the song changes places with the presenter and takes the next song out of the bag.

TV show

The players’ task is to present the TV show: to show its most striking, characteristic features. The rest must guess what the “TV” is showing.

Guess the item

Various items are prepared in advance: keychain, toothpaste, pen, soap, chocolate, balloon, notepad, etc. The names of these objects are written on separate sheets of paper, which are then folded so that the participants cannot see what is written. Then the participants unfold the sheets of paper and each participant must depict the object they were given, and the rest must guess what is depicted. The participant who names the item first receives it as a gift.

There is no way to make cards in advance

In such a case, you can use objects. Collect various small items in an opaque box. Then the player takes out a thing instead of a card and tries to depict it according to the same rules. Whoever guesses the item can take it for themselves. Thus, guests will not only have entertainment, but also symbolic memorable gifts.

For example:

toothpaste; tea bag; spoon; handkerchief; tie; pen; chocolate; pencil; soap; notebook; ruler; apple; banana; orange; toilet paper; candy; cookie.

Description

Number of players: from 3 people, without restrictions.

One of the players must show the hidden word or phrase without clues or objects, using only their ingenuity and resourcefulness. The participant can only use facial expressions, posture and gestures.

The one who guesses the word takes his place; for greater involvement in the game, you can award a prize to the one who turns out to be the most inventive, showing ingenuity.

Funny words for the game “Crocodile” can be printed in advance and placed in an opaque bag. Participants take out cards with words and present their contents, the one who guessed what they came up with takes the card for themselves (to make it easier to calculate who won), takes out a new card with the task, presents what was written, and so on.

You can take a pre-prepared mixture of all types of words or prepare it yourself, giving preference to one direction.

For example: professions; animals; plants; TV shows; hobbies and interests; films and cartoons; fairy tales; songs; celebrities; world brands or aphorisms.

Professions

Stewardess; firefighter; police officer; psychiatrist; plumber; truck driver; midwife; gynecologist; urologist; beekeeper; architect; archaeologist; miner; sculptor; artist; writer; electrician; accountant; lawyer; judge; elevator operator; promoter; director; actor; vet; astronaut; manager; salesman.

Clothespins

The partner’s task is to use his teeth and blindfolded to move the clothespins from the back of the clothes to the clothes on the partner’s chest. The pair that completes the task first wins.

Game "Crocodile"

Thus, the game “New Year of the Crocodile” will provide you with entertainment in between cutting salad and making wishes on the chimes, and “Crocodile: Feelings and Emotions” will help improve your acting skills.

Well, let me mention, especially for those who want to diversify the process, the compact board game “Big Crocodile”. In it you need not only to show words, but also to draw, and even explain using logical chains.

Children's version

“Crocodile” for children is simpler and more colorful than the standard version, each card has only 5 words instead of 10, they can not only gesture, but also draw. Suitable for participants aged 6 years (or even a little younger).

The historically interesting crocodile

This is a game for the most curious and erudite, but it also requires a lot of fun and creativity, since it is not so easy to use gestures to represent various historical events and great personalities.

Crocodile around the world

This set is designed for travel and requires you to stretch your mind to explain the names of exotic dishes, national holidays and customs of different countries. And explaining the names of cities, even Moscow, without words is not a trivial task.

Crocodile big party

Finally, a kind of expanded version of the board game “Crocodile: Big Party”. It contains up to 270 mission cards, 30 trap cards that can be used to harm enemies and help companions, as well as a playing field and small crocodiles. The game also features new mechanics, such as traps, that make words more difficult to explain.

However, if you are still at a loss for words, use the generator and print the Crocodile playing cards yourself. This could be even more fun!

You'll like it

"Crocodile" is an immortal classic. But why not try something new? Here are a few games that use similar word guessing mechanics:

  1. " Hat ". The simplest version of the game. For it you only need a hat (hence the name) and pieces of paper with words. Players take turns taking cards out of their headgear and trying to explain the written words to their team. You can talk.
  2. " Alias ". A variation on the theme of a hat, but more fun and spectacular. There is a playing field with chips and cards with words - although now the explanation is complicated by unusual and funny conditions. For example, explain a word by jumping on one leg and crowing. Great item for parties!
  3. "Activity". Another game similar to “Crocodile” only on a slightly larger scale. There is a playing field and as many as 400 cards with words and expressions. You can explain it any way you like.
  4. "Equivocals". A game made in Russia and for Russians. A colorful version of classic charades, where the explanation method solves the cube and players gradually move towards the final goal along the playing field. More than six thematic versions have already been released.

Rules

Krokodil's rules may change even from company to company. We'll look at the ones that come with the card set. The rules of the game “Crocodile” are different for playing individually and in teams.

Every man for himself

When everyone plays for themselves, the first participant draws a card, chooses one word on it and explains it through pantomime to the others. The guesser takes his place and draws a new card.

Attention: cards do not go to waste - you need to keep your card with you and not show it to anyone. When your turn returns, you do not draw a new card, but make another word with the old one. The first one to show all the words on his card wins.

Team game

It’s more fun to play in teams: the board game goes faster, “Crocodile” is solved more intensively, and team spirit is demonstrated. It is worth breaking up into groups if there are more than six of you.

The participant must depict a concept or phrase without words for members of his own team, and compose such a speech that his teammates will certainly give the correct answer. All team members go onto the “stage” in turn and each time draw a new card and choose a category from which to make a wish.

It is during team play that points are usually counted and U-cards are used. Teams take turns, one move – one minute. During this time, you can guess and guess several words and get points for each. Words from one category are guessed one at a time, without skipping.

Points are recorded in the standings. Game duration is 12 rounds. The team that scores the most points wins.

Cards

There are two types of cards for the game “Crocodile”: cards with tasks

and
U-cards.
Why do we need ready-made cards for the game if for decades the words were simply made up on the fly? The words were arranged according to difficulty, according to categories and, accordingly, according to the points they bring. This is important for game balance.

Each of the two hundred cards contains ten words and phrases, divided into five categories:

  • Objects – everything that can be touched. Three words worth two points each.
  • Actions are all verbs. Three words for two points.
  • Concepts are abstract quantities, ideas, states. One word for five points.
  • Names – famous personalities, names, brands. Two words for three points.
  • Expressions - proverbs, sayings, quotes. One word for five points.
  • U-cards

Special cards contain additional conditions that must be met. They can make the task easier or, on the contrary, more difficult. And bring extra points. It is your right to play with or without these cards. Each team starts with the same set of U-cards and can use one card per turn, strictly before the start of the explanation. But don’t rush to use them - for each U-card that is saved, the team gets a point at the end.

What can be found on U-cards:

  • First letter – as a hint, the explainer names the first letter of the word.
  • An extra minute - plus a minute to understand what exactly the teammate waving his arms is trying to say.
  • Player Substitution - This can be played against opponents to remove their main mime artist from the stage.
  • With your eyes closed, you will have to explain it blindly.
  • Hands in a lock - we clasp our hands and show with our legs, face and body.
  • With his back turned, the player turns away and tries to demonstrate that his acting talents extend to the rear.
  • Robbery is carte blanche to guess the words of someone else's team.
  • Bet - you can bet 10 points that the word will not be guessed.
  • Make a word - make your own word for the enemy player and watch how he gets out of it.

By showing the word you can

  1. Move your arms, legs, body, eyebrows, ears and remaining parts of the body as you please, take any pose.
  2. Answer questions – but only with gestures.
  3. Draw with your finger on the wall or air. Quick schematic drawing techniques will be very useful to you.
  4. Point to anything you were wearing, in your pocket, or in your hands when you started explaining.
  5. Show not the entire phrase, but the words separately. For example, when you need to think of proverbs, sayings, aphorisms.
  6. Showing the word you can't
  7. Make any sounds. Even moo, growl and groan.
  8. Write the word in the air and use deaf-mute language if those present are familiar with it.
  9. “Pronounce” the word with articulation so that it can be read on the lips.
  10. Point to the hidden object and any object that is not on you.
  11. Draw, leaving a mark; pen on paper, finger in the sand, if you’re outside, it doesn’t matter.
  12. Show words in parts or by syllables or letters.

Special Gestures

With the help of various body movements, you can show not only the words being asked, but also hints that are allowed to be demonstrated with certain gestures. They sometimes help a lot in completing this quest, and if the tasks and explanations themselves are funny, cool and amusing, then the hint gestures are more often universal, some are used in tournaments, some in amateur games. There are about two dozen of them. For example:

  • Hands crosswise in front of you - forget everything that was “said” before, the explanation begins anew. It can come in handy when those guessing have gone “into the wrong steppe” or the guesser has had a brilliant idea on how to quickly and simply explain everything to others.
  • Hitting your palm with your palm or making a circular motion with your hand at the elbow is already close, look for synonyms.
  • A large circle is outlined with your hands - look for a broader concept, less specific.
  • Circular movements with the index finger are a word with the same root.
  • Several raised fingers - the number of the word in the hidden phrase.
  • Right hand to the right and back, as if you are shifting the reverse gear in a car - you need to go back in your reasoning.
  • The index finger touches the forehead - you need to remember what you just said.
  • The index finger touches the forehead and immediately returns - remember what was stored in memory.
  • Cross movement of the index fingers in the vertical plane - select an association.
  • The same gesture, but followed by touching your ear with your finger - look for a consonant or rhyming word.

Team to team

The task cards are divided into three decks by type, each team draws from 2 to 4 cards from each, shuffles them and places them face down in a “path” in front of them. During the game, players will take cards from the “track” one by one.

Trap Bun cards are close to U-cards; there are 3 of them per team. When a player accepts a task, he must show it to one of the enemy teams, which has Trap Buns, and they can complicate his life at their discretion.

Correctly solved tasks allow you to move the card to the winning pile and get 1 point. If you fail to guess, it is simply put aside.

For the final challenge, a player on the team behind draws a card from any challenge pile, looks at what difficulty is written on the finish card, and begins to explain. Teams try to race to guess the word, and those who succeed take both cards into the winning pile and, accordingly, receive 2 additional points.

Among family and friends. For example, play your favorite “Crocodile”!

Other options

There are many ways to play outside the written rules. For example, “children’s lung crocodile” can be used to train a child’s imaginative thinking. Just eliminate the competitive element and give your child simple tasks from cards.

With a box of “all sorts of crocodile” you can spend a nice evening together with someone, entertaining each other with pantomime, taking turns, filming home videos or videos for YouTube.

You can also mix all the add-ons together - you get a voluminous game “Grand Crocodile”. By the way, there really is a game with that name, but from a different publisher. Just like Mini Crocodile.

If you have time, you can make cards yourself and simply print them on a printer.

Beginners

Some people immediately understand how to play Crocodile, but for others this game is very difficult. For beginners, you can use basic words. You can start with the simplest associations. For example, if you see a glass on the table, try to show it.

Then you can use abstractions. For example, show your friends the word set. If a company plays the same computer game, you can show characters or artifacts from it. This is also always very fun and funny.

If an experienced team has gathered, you can take not only words and phrases, but also entire sentences. For example, words from songs or films.
