Viber, social networks and a group of like-minded people - Dmitry Ovchinnikov shared his experience of organizing a meeting evening using modern technologies.
Remember the words from the song “Dedication to Classmates” by Sergei Trofimov: “So I was attacked by the anniversary - 25 years since I graduated from school”? This is the date that “attacked” me this year. Once again, I set myself a goal - to gather my classmates, and in as many numbers as possible.
Last Saturday, February 6, Highlander schools opened their doors to their former students. Arriving with some of my classmates at 18:00 at school No. 4, which we graduated in 1991, with slight excitement and nostalgic memories we walked along the corridors of our native educational institution. And, as befits “old men,” they sedately took the far row of chairs in the assembly hall.
Among those present there were many young people, obviously recent graduates - their friendship is still strong. The “anniversaries”—graduates of 1996 and 2001—sat in separate groups. Most likely, there were younger ones - 2006 and 2011. But I didn’t know them anymore. It was not possible to stay until the end of the ceremonial part and figure out who was who: the time was running out for the start of the “unofficial meeting” in a narrower circle.
It immediately caught my eye that although the hall was almost full, the number of those present was not as large as, say, during our last visit in 2011. According to my observations, interest in meeting evenings is falling - and this is already a trend.
At first, while we are young and easy-going, we gather quite often. But over the years, we begin to drown in everyday and work problems, we become inert, and withdraw into our shell. Increasingly, many people answer a call “from the past” with an offer to come to a meeting evening: “I don’t know. I will think. “And they themselves had already decided: “I’m not going anywhere. What did I forget there? What if I look there (outwardly or financially) worse than others, etc.” And someone, having reached certain heights in life, thinks: “They are no longer company for me.”
Despite life's problems, I, like many of my classmates, make a lot of effort to get together every year. Sometimes these meetings take place in the summer. But their organization always requires time, patience and initiative. But don’t be afraid of this: all costs will be paid off by the emotions and warm feelings that will remain after the meeting.
I would like to give some practical advice to those active people who are ready to put aside personal problems and organize a meeting with their school friends.
Invite teachers
Of course, at the alumni meeting it is interesting to look at your peers. The teachers will also be interesting to look at. It's one thing when you look at the older generation through the eyes of a child, and quite another thing when you look at your mentors years later. Yes, your teachers have hardly changed during this time. But you have changed too. You have formed a clear life strategy; you perceive what is happening around you in a completely different way. Old idols might have faded, so it wouldn’t hurt to look at those people who played an important role in your development as a person. Be sure to invite teachers to the alumni reunion evening. Yes, perhaps many of them will not be able to come. Maybe some won't even be alive anymore. You should find out all this information in advance. Come to school, find your class teacher and talk to him. He will tell you how things are going at school, who is feeling great and who is sick. Write down the names of those who could potentially attend your event and print out invitations for them. Don't forget to give this paper to your class teacher. By handing out invitations in person, you can collect information regarding whether the teacher intends to attend your evening or not. Based on this data, you will order food and seats in the establishment.
Viber to help us
If you have the currently popular Viber application installed on your mobile device, try to find out which of your classmates also use it and unite these people into a group. Asking if your colleague wants to participate in the group is not a good idea. The accession occurs without his consent. If a person wants, he can leave your “online team” at any time.
Do you think it's ineffective? 15 of my “mature” classmates ended up on Viber and, accordingly, became part of the group. And not one left her. This is precisely the most powerful tool in the hands of the organizer. Believe me, from now on your classmates will begin to communicate in a group without your participation. And you will be able to quickly convey information about organizing a meeting, without spending money on phone calls.
Don't forget about personal contacts
If someone stubbornly refuses to attend, try to call them personally and tactfully find out why. If you see that the reason is objective, leave the person alone this time. If he hesitates: don’t rush him, let him think, tell him that you’ll call him back in a couple of days.
There is one more point in this process. The number of meeting participants before the deadline is not a constant number. Therefore, it is better to look for a place for the “unofficial part” where prepayment is either not needed or is minimal. Think for yourself here.
I tried all of the above myself. Thanks to this, we, students of class 11 “A” of secondary school No. 4, who left its walls in 1991, were together again on this February evening. Together after 25 years spent outside the school where we were given a start in life.
