Congratulations to our teachers! What do we know about the history of the holiday?

The role of teachers in the life of every person cannot be overestimated. From an early age, teachers share more than just knowledge with students. They teach you to think, be kind, honest and responsive, and achieve your goals. Thanks to the hard work of their mentors, the children are drawn to new knowledge, move forward, and discover their talents and abilities. Every year, education in Russia gets better and gives children the opportunity to get the desired specialty in order to realize themselves in later life. Each educational institution celebrates Teacher's Day every year, and in 2021 in Russia it will be celebrated traditionally on October 5.

History of the holiday Teacher's Day

Every year at the beginning of October, mentors are honored, flowers and gifts are given, and speeches of gratitude are made. October 5 is a solemn holiday for educational workers, on which they once again emphasize the serious and responsible work of mentors.

The history of celebrating Teacher's Day dates back to 1966. On October 5, a special intergovernmental conference was held in the capital of France, which discussed the status of teachers from more than 100 countries. As a result, representatives of the International Labor Organization and UNESCO signed the document “Recommendations concerning the status of teachers.”

In the Soviet Union, Teacher's Day was celebrated for the first time in 1965, on September 29. Teachers' Day was first celebrated on October 5 in 1994, and since then this wonderful tradition has been preserved in many countries. Until 1994, in Russia, mentors were congratulated on the first Sunday in October, but currently teachers are congratulated on October 5th.

UN representatives invite everyone on the eve of the holiday to think about how much work, love and care teachers invest in students from an early age. Every person will probably remember a beloved mentor who changed their worldview, helped them choose the right vector in life, discovered talents, and believed in their students.

Unfortunately, recently there has been an acute shortage of teachers in the country. Specialists are retraining in other areas, for example, the lucrative field of IT technology, where they can earn significantly more than in school. In addition, the work of a teacher is incredibly difficult from a psychological point of view: burnout often occurs, the nervous system is exhausted, the desire to improve, improve qualifications, and simply go to work every day to teach children what is kind, wise, and bright disappears. Students now are also not the same as they were before. Many people have stopped appreciating the work of teachers, are disrespectful towards teachers, and do not want to gain knowledge.

The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has found that to ensure primary education in many countries, about 3 million additional teachers will need to be employed by 2030.

UNESCO representatives call on October 5 to express gratitude and respect to teachers who do so much to instill in students a love of knowledge. UNESCO says many countries need to invest in teachers to improve our future. Government and international cooperation must come together to do everything possible to support educators in their difficult work. Education around the world must be of high quality, and for this it is necessary to improve working conditions in educational institutions.

Simple tips

To make the holiday memorable for a long time, avoid standard gifts: candy, tea, coffee, flowers, vases, wall clocks, etc. It is important that the gift takes into account the interests and needs of the teacher and carries an element of a pleasant surprise.

It is advisable that the gift is not “one-time” and serves as a reminder of your love and respect for a long time. Not only the beauty of the gift is important, but also how it is presented.

For example, a philologist or mathematician will never need good stationery, desk sets, and a regular 4-8 GB flash drive will also come in handy.

You can surprise with anything, from a certificate for a parachute jump to household appliances for the kitchen. After all, the best gift for a teacher is not the one that was bought “for show,” but the one that was chosen with soul and hit the mark.

One elderly teacher, of all the gifts she was given over the many years of work at school (including a gold watch), valued most of all a simple card from her student with the inscription:

“Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for showing me that I matter and can make a difference. You have become a second mother to me..."

PS Dear, dear teachers. Thank you for your dedicated work! May life give you a rainbow of smiles. Great love and warmth in your relationships with your loved ones and friends. I wish you good health and great happiness!
