As the legend says, he was born on the porch next to the Yelokhovsky Church in honor of the “Vladimir” icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. From an early age, Vasily’s parents Jacob and Anna began to notice that an unusual boy was growing up in their family; in adolescence he was sent to study shoemaking. One day, a merchant came to the shop and asked to sew boots for him, which he never took off. The blessed one answered him with tears that they would do the same to him, and he would not be able to bear them, because... will die soon, that's what happened.

When he turned 16 years old, Vasily left his home and went to Moscow, so that there, among vanity, lies and deception, he could bring the light of Christ’s faith, and the path for this he chose was foolishness for Christ’s sake. He always walked naked, not embarrassed by human gaze, as if emphasizing the original state of man - without shame and fear. Many times the Lord revealed to Blessed Basil the names of churches where fires were about to happen. He came to the gates of these temples, prayed and cried. People did not understand what this could mean, but when after some time the churches were on fire, many guessed what the saint wanted to warn them about.

He always came to the aid of those who were in great need, but were ashamed to ask for help. So St. Basil helped one merchant who was in great need and had not eaten anything for three days. He gave him royal gifts. The Blessed One was also indignant when people gave alms for show or not with all their hearts, and he severely rebuked such wicked people.

Saint Basil healed the sick, drove away demons, tried to convey the word of God in a noisy, crowded and passionate Moscow: to console, alleviate suffering, and call to live according to the commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Basil died at the age of 88. Many people gathered for the burial; the body of the saint was carried personally by Tsar John and the prince. The glorification of the holy fool took place in 1588.
