Lyceum Student Day is a holiday dedicated to the opening of an educational institution, which at one time became the home for many great minds of Russia, personalities who glorified this country throughout the world. We are talking, of course, about the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, whose students were Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, Alexander Pushkin, Lev May and many other domestic “celebrities”. Lyceum Students' Day is celebrated annually, now it is a holiday for all lyceum students, a holiday that cannot be imagined without open lessons, creative evenings, entertainment events with games and competitions.
Autumn Waltz
The presenter first selects two players who will have to dance a slow dance in an unusual way: at a distance with an elastic band stretched between them at head level (it will need to be lowered gradually). In addition, 8-10 people are invited to participate in the competition. Everyone needs to break into pairs and take turns holding hands and walking in front of a constantly moving stretched elastic band. This task is not an easy one. The winner is the couple that manages to hold out until the last moment, when the elastic band is lowered as low as possible (as far as possible, taking into account the fact that couples must pass under it).
Lyceum Student Day today - who celebrates it and how

October 19 is All-Russian Lyceum Student Day. For some, this is news and a reason for grumpy comments: “We’ve been making up holidays! There’s no time to work, just celebrate!” For others, Lyceum Student Day is one of the most important and long-awaited holidays. And there are many of them in our city. After all, there are three lyceums in Ryazan, which means that Lyceum Students’ Day is celebrated by its students - past and present, their parents and, of course, teachers.
In modern Russia, the celebration of Lyceum Student Day began in the 90s, when such a concept as a lyceum reappeared in our education system. The date for this holiday was also not chosen at random. It was on October 19 that the famous Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum was opened, founded by decree of Emperor Alexander I. According to the emperor’s plan, his younger brothers, heirs to the Russian throne, were to study here. The emperor's plans were not destined to come true. But studying at this institution was still considered very prestigious; children of nobles of the upper classes were brought up here, who were able to pay for the stay of their children within the walls of an elite educational institution. Lyceum students were taught by the best teachers of that time. The program was designed to prepare young people for national positions.
Among the graduates of the lyceum one can recall such civil and political figures as A. P. Bakunin (governor and privy councilor), A. M. Gorchakov (last chancellor of the Russian Empire), A. A. Delvig (poet and publisher), A. D. Illichevsky (poet, state councilor), N. A. Korsakov (poet, composer, diplomat), M. A. Korf (director of the Imperial Library), S. G. Lomonosov (privy councilor, envoy extraordinary and minister), F. F. Matyushkin (admiral, senator, polar explorer) and many, many others.
And the most famous graduate of the lyceum is Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. It was from his works that we learned about such a holiday as Lyceum Students’ Day. It's time for everything: for the twenty-fifth time we celebrate the Lyceum's cherished day. The years have passed in unnoticed succession, and how they have changed us! No wonder - no - a quarter of a century has flown by. Do not complain: such is the law of fate; The whole world revolves around man, - Will he really be the only one motionless?
How do modern lyceums live? How are they different from public schools? How is Lyceum Student Day celebrated? We learned about this in three Ryazan educational institutions of this status: Lyceum No. 4, Lyceum No. 52 and the Ryazan Free Lyceum.
MAUO "Lyceum No. 4" is located in the very center of Ryazan, on Cathedral Square, 15. The institution was founded in 1939, the status of a lyceum was assigned to it in 1991, and since 2021, MAOU "Lyceum No. 4" has become the Basic School of the National Research University - Higher School of Economics (NRU-HSE).
Tsarist times are long gone, but even today many parents strive to send their children to the lyceum. And their desire is understandable. Indeed, in 2005, the lyceum entered the top thirty best schools according to the results of the “Best Schools in Russia” competition. In 2013 and 2021, the lyceum was included in the TOP 500 best educational institutions of the Russian Federation, was noted in the national register “Leading Educational Institutions of Russia”, in the Federal Directory “Education in Russia”, in the encyclopedia “Gifted Children - the Future of Russia”. Based on the results of the last few years, in the ranking of the municipal system for assessing the quality of education (MSQE), the lyceum occupies the first position in terms of the main criteria for the quality of school education. Lyceum No. 4 prepares students in the humanities, natural sciences and technology. The main criterion for the success of an educational institution today is the Unified State Examination results. In the order of the Education Department No. 04/1-01-550 dated August 14, 2019. The lyceum is recognized among schools that for three years in a row have results above the city average in two compulsory subjects. At the end of the 2018-2019 academic year, graduates of the lyceum showed three 100-point results: Anton Komarov (in mathematics and computer science), Alena Zenina (in Russian language). Thus, during the Unified State Exam, the number of 100-point students in the lyceum increased to 31. In the 2018-2019 academic year, 10 graduates of the lyceum received certificates with honors and were awarded the federal medal “For special achievements in learning”, 5 of them received the regional award Badge Governor's Medal "For Special Achievements in Education." The results of the Unified State Exam 2019 in all subjects are above the city average.
The Lyceum is especially proud of its graduates: drama theater actor Arseniy Kudrey, poetess Ekaterina Ponomareva, Maxim Mukhovikov, athletes Mark Konov, Andrey Kharkov, leader of the youth volunteer movement Yuri Pinigin, scientist Maria Nuzhdina, head teacher and former graduate of the Lyceum Irina Mosolova, 100-point student in two subjects by Anton Komarov and many, many others.
The results of the Olympiads are no less important. In the 2018-2019 academic year, the lyceum showed good results at the municipal stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren: 115 people received diplomas as winners and prize-winners. According to the results of the regional stage, 28 students became winners and prize-winners, 9 of whom were awarded the honorary badge “Intellectual Potential of the Ryazan Region”. Over the past decade, 13 high school students have climbed to the highest step of the Olympiad podium, becoming winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad, one of them last academic year was Alena Zenina, a prize-winner in the Russian language. 6 students who achieved high results in intellectual activity in the last academic year were awarded personal scholarships from the Governor of the Ryazan Region for gifted children.
The lyceum, like any educational institution, is not only walls and programs. First of all, these are teachers. For 23 years now, the director of the lyceum has been the Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation, Nadezhda Ivanovna Shirenina. The lyceum employs 48 teachers, one of whom has the title “People’s Teacher” and five - “Honored Teacher”.
Every year on Lyceum Student’s Day, lyceum lessons are held here, initiation into lyceum students, graduates of past years come and communicate with graduates and teachers, and a large lyceum cake is always baked on this day. Read more about the holiday at Lyceum No. 4 here.
Another educational institution in Ryazan that celebrates Lyceum Student Day is Lyceum No. 52. It is located on Kosmonavtov Street, 13. It was this lyceum that became the first innovative educational institution of an advanced level in our region. The opening of Lyceum No. 52 took place on September 1, 1990.
Here, programs of lyceum, pre-profile and specialized classes in mathematical, physical and mathematical, mathematical and economic, socio-economic, chemical and biological areas are implemented.
According to director Angelina Vladimirovna Malistova, Lyceum No. 52 is not just a school. This is a union of like-minded people: teachers, students, parents who create the atmosphere of the Lyceum House. The Lyceum is famous for its traditions and holidays. That is why parents and children from all over the city flock here.
Graduates of Lyceum No. 52 successfully continue their studies in leading universities in Ryazan, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia (from 90 to 100% of admissions in different years) or in secondary vocational educational institutions. Lyceum students enter MIPT, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Moscow State Technical University named after Bauman, St. Petersburg State University, Russian State University named after S.A. Yesenin, RGMU, RGTU.
Over the years, the lyceum has been one of the leaders in the number of winners of city and regional Olympiads. Lyceum students annually participate in All-Russian Olympiads in various subjects and win All-Russian competitions.
Angelina Vladimirovna noted that the lyceum is rightfully proud of all its graduates. But there are personalities who have become known far beyond the borders of Ryazan. For example, Pavel Borisovich Salin, a 1996 graduate, is the director of the Center for Political Research at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and often gives interviews on television and in the press.
Lyceum student's day in this friendly team is one of the most beloved and anticipated holidays. Without breaking traditions, it is celebrated on the eve of October 19th. In a solemn atmosphere, first-graders and newly admitted students are initiated into lyceum students, and the elected president of the lyceum takes the oath of allegiance at the inauguration ceremony. The holiday ends with a concert of lyceum students. And just as in the time of Pushkin, the words “My friends! Our union is wonderful!” See the report from this holiday at the link

The Ryazan Free Lyceum appeared 25 years ago thanks to the ardent desire of a group of young teachers to work together and build “their own” school. In the early 90s, when scientists with degrees were trading in the markets, this initiative looked like a real adventure.
As the director of the Free Lyceum, Dmitry Aleksandrovich Silkin, recalls, the instigators of this seemingly hopeless enterprise gathered the first students by calling their numerous acquaintances and convincing them that they would definitely succeed. In 1993, RSL met its first students - there were only 20 of them.
At first, the lyceum was very different from the average educational institution. First of all, because it was very small - a sort of small school without a gym and a chemical laboratory. Over time, the lyceum has grown quantitatively and qualitatively. Today, 170 people are already studying here. This is not enough from the point of view of a state mass school, but not bad at all for a paid one.
RSL today is not an elite school. But at the same desk there could be a boy from a family that owns its own helicopter, and the daughter of a single mother who runs between three jobs. And they all communicate well with each other. To enroll here, you need to pass tests in mathematics, Russian and English, as well as an interview with future class teachers. You should also definitely attend guest days to try on the atmosphere of the lyceum and decide whether it is right for you.
The most common question that the director and teachers of the RSL hear is: “What is the lyceum free from?” And there is still no definitive answer. For example, the lyceum has a free uniform of clothing and hairstyles. Children who are seriously involved in sports or in scientific clubs may have the opportunity to freely attend some lessons, subject to the timely passing of tests and assessments. And last September, when the weather was wonderful, summer, all classes were recommended to spend as much time as possible not at their desks, but on excursions, in museums, or simply organize lessons in parks or the school’s indoor courtyard. Can large public schools afford to enter the school year so smoothly?
Everyone who has come into contact with this educational institution speaks and writes about the warm atmosphere of the lyceum. It is created by students, teachers, parents, and graduates in traditional water and ski trips, in summer tent gatherings “Gorodishche”, in the intellectual club “Gonobobel”, in theatrical productions, subject immersions, role-playing games, musical and literary evenings, cultural walks and tea parties.
Despite the fact that classes start at 9 am, many children come to the RSL early to socialize, finish homework, and add wall newspapers. And they stay until deep darkness, and sometimes drop by on Sundays. The school that children want to go to is probably not a bad school.
Different children study at RSL, with different intellectual levels and life aspirations. They choose a variety of universities and faculties in Ryazan, Moscow, and recently, more and more often in St. Petersburg.
There are graduates of the Free Lyceum that not only this educational institution, but the entire city is proud of. But they didn’t tell us their names, saying that they couldn’t list them all, and they didn’t want to miss anyone. The Ryazan Free Lyceum is proud of each of its students, be it an academician or a taxi driver.
And for everyone - future academicians and taxi drivers, as well as for their teachers and parents, the Day of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in the RSL is a holiday at the level of the New Year. Preparation begins a month in advance. After all, for the whole day the entire school should be transformed into an educational institution for the Russian elite of the 19th century. And the lyceum plays this cultural and historical reconstruction very seriously. On this day, lessons are taught only by male teachers - mostly invited specialists in a variety of sciences. Fencing, poetry, the Law of God, rhetoric, calligraphy - these are the unusual sciences studied on this day at the RSL. Classical music is played during breaks. And after classes the ball begins, for which rehearsals took place for several weeks, a program was drawn up, and entertainment was invented. See the report from the holiday here.

Intellectuals
Who said that intellectual battle is boring? A competition will help prove the opposite, in which lyceum students (divided into teams of 3-4 people) will be asked to temporarily match the portraits of famous students of the Imperial Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum with the correct cards with names. Each team is given identical sets of cards with names and cards with portraits of outstanding graduates of one of the oldest and most famous educational institutions in Russia. The winner is the team that completed the task the fastest, while making the fewest mistakes.
General education program
According to historical information, the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum accepted teenagers from ten to fourteen years old. Admission took place every three years, while training was carried out over a period of six years.
Basically, the educational program had the following directions:
- morality (God's law, logic, ethics, political economy, law);
- literature (rhetoric, calligraphy, as well as teaching languages: Latin, French, German and, of course, Russian);
- history (world and domestic, geography);
- mathematics (including statistics, physics, cosmography);
- grace and physical fitness (dancing, fencing, horse riding and even swimming).
At different times, the curriculum underwent changes, maintaining a humanitarian and legal orientation.
It is noteworthy that when training lyceum students, it was impossible to use corporal punishment, which was unprecedentedly widespread in the educational system of that time.
Measure the distance in...
This is a fun game for little lyceum students. First you need to make the same markings “start” and “finish”. Each player on two teams is given quantities of the strangest and most unexpected items, for example, counting sticks, rubber bath ducks, tennis balls (or just tennis-sized balls). Each player has his own set of items. Rules of the game: 1. At the command of the leader, the first player of each team measures the distance in those objects that he got (puts them on the distance). 2. As soon as the first player reaches the finish line and records the results of his measuring work on the board, the second player starts, who, like the first, measures the distance between the “start” and “finish” markings in the objects that fell to him. 3. The game continues according to this principle until all team members complete the task. The one who completes the test first wins.
Lyceum lunch
Anyone who knows the history of the Lyceum Student Day holiday is well aware of the good old tradition of graduates getting together for a Lyceum lunch every year on October 19th. In the meantime, students are far from graduation, you can play a game of the same name, which is played for two teams (each with 3-4 people). Each team receives a deep vessel filled with water, as well as 3-4 (depending on the number of players) tubes. At the signal from the team leader, team members begin to drink water through a straw, trying to get around the opponent, that is, trying to empty the vessel first.
Pupils
Young nobles, studying at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, received minor civil ranks after graduation. They could also enter military service, since their education was equivalent to training in the page corps.
As mentioned above, among the graduates of the Lyceum (from the mid-1840s it became known as the Imperial Alexander Lyceum) there were many civil and political figures who had a huge impact on the history of the Russian state. For example, A. P. Bakunin (governor and privy councilor), A. M. Gorchakov (last chancellor of the Russian Empire), A. A. Delvig (poet and publisher), A. D. Illichevsky (poet, state councilor), N A. Korsakov (poet, composer, diplomat), M. A. Korf (Director of the Imperial Library), S. G. Lomonosov (privy councilor, envoy extraordinary and minister), F. F. Matyushkin (admiral, senator, polar explorer ) and many, many others.
Above is only the first graduation from the Imperial Lyceum. One can only imagine how many important and progressive figures this educational institution has produced.
It was these first graduates who laid the foundation for the celebration of Lyceum Student Day on October 19. On this day, every year they came to the walls of this educational institution to look at each other and remember the old days. Alumni meetings often ended with a rich dinner and fun festivities.
However, there was someone else involved in the October 19 date. A lyceum student’s day without this person was considered ordinary and uninteresting. Who is this?
Burime
Holding a Burime game is an excellent and simple way to get in touch with the Pushkin Lyceum era. The presenter decides in advance on the topics in which teams (maximum 3) will be asked to compose short poems. The catch is that each team will have to compose a poem collectively, but with a significant contribution of individual work. The basic rule is that each team member comes up with one line, trying to maintain the rhyme of the verse, its style and, most importantly, the meaning. The winner is determined by the guests of the festive event.
When is All-Russian Lyceum Student Day celebrated?
October 19 is the All-Russian Lyceum Student Day in the calendar of professional holidays. In the 90s of the 20th century, this day entered the calendar of holidays; this happened after the return of such a concept as “lyceum” to the Russian education system. Lyceum Student Day has returned thanks to a public initiative. The creation of more and more educational institutions throughout Russia has led to the need to revive the professional holiday for tens of thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students.
At some point, the idea arose to celebrate this event on December 31, but this initiative did not take root, and the date of the celebration remained the same - October 19.
Hurrying to the Lyceum
A diligent lyceum student is, among other things, a punctual lyceum student. The punctuality and dexterity of the lyceum students will test an interesting competition in which three players will have to complete tasks before the bell rings for class (you will need to set a timer): 1. Put on the proposed items as quickly as possible. To make the task more difficult, players are given each piece of clothing inside out. 2. Collect your briefcase as quickly as possible. 3. Go through all the obstacles on the way to the lyceum. Obstacles can be created from empty bottles, from hoops that other children will hold at different levels (you will need to climb through the hoops). 4. Place all school supplies (which were previously placed in a briefcase) on your desk. The winner is the lyceum student who completes all the tasks faster than others.
A little about the leaders
The director's house was located on the territory of the institution. It is noteworthy that this position was initially occupied by famous Russian teachers and educators (Vasily Fedorovich Malinovsky and Yegor Antonovich Engelhardt). Later, the director's post was occupied by military men: Lieutenant General Fyodor Grigorievich Goltgoer and Lieutenant General Dmitry Bogdanovich Bronevsky. It was from this time that the lyceum program approached the course of the law faculty.
Under Bronevsky, the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum moved to St. Petersburg, to the building of the Alexandrinsky Orphanage. After this, the building was rebuilt and extended several times. A four-story outbuilding for educators and teachers was also erected.
Excellent students
A good game for little lyceum students. All you need to carry it out are cardboard numbers and a magnetic board (with magnets, respectively). The leader selects two teams of 3-4 people. Each team receives the same set of number cards, which must be poured onto the table and mixed. The players’ task is to select only the numbers five from all the piles of cards at the leader’s signal. The selected numbers must be fixed on their half of the magnetic board. An important rule is that one player can only bring one five to the board at a time. As soon as the presenter says “Stop the game”, the selected numbers of each team are counted. The winners are those excellent students who have the highest marks.
How to celebrate All-Russian Lyceum Students Day
Today, Lyceum Student Day is celebrated brightly and festively: educational institutions hold ceremonial and festive events, for which students and teaching staff prepare carefully and with special trepidation. The program of events includes creative evenings, thematic exhibitions, open lessons, and concerts.
Former graduates of educational institutions are necessarily invited to the celebration, who have the opportunity to communicate with teachers and their classmates. The administration organizes Open Days, when anyone can come to the establishment and get all the information they are interested in. The history of the establishment, exchange of experiences and practices, meeting new interesting people - these are just a small part of the topics that are raised during the celebration.
Particular attention is paid to this day in St. Petersburg, where balls and theatrical performances are held. An event of national scale is held here, about which information appears in many media - this is the Lyceum Autumn festival. Not only students, but also teaching staff dream of becoming its participant.
