Let's admit: we love "Pretty Woman" not only for the romantic plot, the touching performance of Julia Roberts, the insanely charming Richard Gere, the song "Pretty Woman" and the sparkling humor of Hector Elizondo, but also for the incredible outfits of the main character Vivienne, which immediately take us to the atmosphere of the USA 90s Thanks to the famous Hollywood costume designer Marilyn Vance for this.
Two looks that I especially wanted to highlight were, of course, the iconic beige polka dot dress from Anne Klein, which continues to inspire designers year after year.
The second is a luxurious red dress with bare shoulders, in which Vivien goes to the opera. According to Marilyn Vance, this dress was supposed to be a modern version of the outfit worn by Audrey Hepburn’s character in “My Fair Lady.”
An unexpected stumbling block between the costume designer and the director was the color of the dress: Garry Marshall insisted that the dress be black and more ballroom. As a result, the costume team prepared three dresses and held three photo sessions with Julia to decide which version would be the final one. Vance wins! However, she won not only in a dispute with the director: in the same year she received a Bafta award for best costume designer - precisely for her work on “Pretty Woman.”
