It is believed that baptizing a child helps protect the newborn from all evil, as well as take care of his health. In Orthodoxy, when a baby appears in a family, the question is raised about how the child is baptized, rules and signs.
After baptism, many people remove the cross so that the baby does not pull it and the string does not rub the delicate skin. They are worn already at a conscious age.
We will consider the features of the process of baptism of a newborn, as well as folk signs preserved in the memory of many generations, in our article.
How is a child baptized?
In many religions, water is the source of life, so it is not surprising that in Orthodoxy, newborns are also dipped in water, believing that they will become stronger and grow healthy.
First, let's find out in more detail how a child is baptized in a church. This rite is recognized by Orthodoxy if it is performed by Armenians, Calvinists, Catholics, as well as in the Anglican or Lutheran Church.
Rules for baptizing a child in church
Any occupation or business implies certain rules, the observance of which is necessary for all participants. In the same way, all rituals and traditions have their own canons.
Basic rules for baptizing a child in the Orthodox Church:
- The sacrament is performed in the temple, although there may be exceptions. For example, if the baby is under the supervision of doctors, and it is not possible to take him to the temple.
- The sacrament is performed by the priest within an hour on the 40th day from birth, since both the baby and the mother can already physically withstand the ceremony.
- First, the priest reads prohibition prayers to protect the baby from all evil.
- Since the baby does not yet speak, the godparents must renounce Satan three times in his place, and also voice their desire to be reunited with Jesus Christ.
- The prayer “Creed” is also read by the priest three times.
- Next, water and oil, that is, oil, are blessed.
- According to tradition, the baby is dipped into the font three times.
a) immersion in the font; b) anointing
- The name given to the baby in the church is not disclosed, since it has a protective function and is a kind of talisman - a talisman.
- After this, the baby is wrapped in kryzhma, that is, a diaper special for this ritual, so as not to catch a cold. But it’s better not to remove water from your face.
- The next step is confirmation, when the priest anoints the child with oil.
- Next, the Gospel and the Apostle are read, then the priest cuts off a small amount of the baby’s hair.
- After putting a cross on his neck, the baby becomes a Christian.
- During the process of baptism, infants are not only dipped, but also the baby is sprinkled, which is also allowed.
- Any person can be baptized only once, just like he can be born into the world.
According to one belief, if a baby cries very loudly during baptism, then it is evil spirits who are leaving the child alone. The very rite of baptism of a child in Orthodoxy, the rules of which we have examined, is the most important step for parents, as well as relatives, so on such a day they all gather together to celebrate this event.
Other dishes and snacks that are prepared for a child’s baptism
Poultry was usually served as the main dish for baptism. Moreover, if a girl was baptized, then a chicken was baked, and if a boy was baptized, a rooster was baked. Nowadays, it’s unlikely that anyone will observe such subtleties. It is too difficult to determine the gender of a chicken bought in a supermarket. So parents of boys can be advised to cook a goose, and for a girl’s christening, duck or chicken are perfect.
The presence of a wide variety of meat snacks and salads from food for a child’s baptism is not prohibited. It is desirable to have nuts on the table in a variety of varieties. Firstly, it is tasty, and secondly, it is healthy for a nursing mother.
Returning to traditions, it is worth recalling that children must be present at the table. After all, christening is still a children's holiday. If there are no kids among the invited guests, then you can simply treat the neighbor kids to some goodies. After all, it is with them that a newly baptized baby will someday communicate.
Christening in the life of a person, even a very small one, is an important event. The Church equates this event to the second birth of a person, but not physical, but spiritual. On such an important day, you want everything to go well, in compliance with all the rules and traditions. If christenings fall during Lent, then priests advise celebrating christenings with a narrow family circle. Only lean dishes should be on the table. If parents want to arrange a big holiday, then it is better to postpone the Sacrament of Baptism to another time.
For the Lenten table, you can prepare, for example, zucchini pie. Mushrooms, onions, zucchini, and vegetable oil are used for the filling. Yeast dough must be kneaded with water and without eggs. You can bake fish on this day, just check the Orthodox calendar first. It lists all the fasts, and for each day of fasting there is a list of what you can eat on that day and what you can’t. There are quite a lot of Lenten recipes: mushroom roll, porridge with vegetables, Lenten dumplings stuffed with potatoes, cabbage and mushrooms. Even a cake can be made without dairy products or eggs. An experienced housewife will always have similar recipes.
There are many beliefs and folk signs associated with the Sacrament of Baptism. For example, there is a popular belief that godparents at a christening should sit next to each other and try all the festive dishes so that the godson will have prosperity in the house in the future.
The main dish at christenings was always sweet porridge. All the guests had to try it, and then the women would sort the porridge for their children. It was prepared like this: two glasses of millet were boiled in milk, then steamed and crushed poppy seeds were added along with nuts, and the porridge was seasoned with honey and butter. The porridge was always prepared by the grandmother or the midwife who delivered the baby. Nowadays, this role is usually taken on by the woman who bathed the child for the first time.
At christenings there is a symbolic bargain for a pot of porridge. The godfather must ransom it, then he must lift the pot high above his head and carefully break it on the corner of the table. After which the mother and all the guests should try it. The godfather gives the money for the porridge to the child’s mother.
If you want to follow all the traditions, you should know that the main dishes at all Russian holidays were porridge, pies and various vegetable borscht. You should never cook pancakes for a christening. This is considered a bad omen. Before the Sacrament of Baptism, the child’s parents and future godparents should try to lead a righteous life. You cannot guess at this time, this is also considered a bad omen. The church allows fortune telling only at Christmas. It is believed that Christmas fortune-telling does not involve sin, and that fortune-telling during Christmas week is the most truthful.
Baptism of a child: what parents need to know
How is the sacrament of baptism performed? What spiritual meaning does it carry? What do parents of a baby need to know? What is required from godparents? What are the basic requirements and main taboos?….
These questions concern those who themselves are going to accept the rite of baptism or baptize their children. The Orthodox priest, Archpriest Vasily RUSINKA answers these important questions
What do parents who want to baptize their baby need to know? Why is Baptism necessary?
First of all, this is the beginning of spiritual life, a kind of “pass” to heaven - the Kingdom of God. A newly enlightened person receives remission of previous sins, the original sins passed on from Adam to all his descendants, and sins committed consciously (for an adult). That is why Baptism, among all the Sacraments, is the first sacrament and is necessary for every person seeking salvation and the meaning of life.
Without what is Baptism impossible?
Without faith! For an adult, baptism without faith and repentance is impossible. Children are baptized according to the faith of their parents and godparents, who, in turn, must themselves be baptized. In order not to get confused on the day of christening, it would be very useful for future godparents to read the Holy Scriptures in advance, in particular, the chapters about the earthly life of Christ and His Baptism. If you have been invited to become a godfather, do not be confused, but go to the temple. Approach the ministers; no one will refuse you advice or help. And if your soul is not ready for active interaction with representatives of the church, you can simply stand silently at the icon, ask for help and admonition.
What happens during the sacrament?
At the very beginning, a prayer “for naming” is said, in which the priest asks God so that the little man bears his name with dignity, and does not scold it and thereby not offend his patron saint. A person’s name distinguishes him from billions of other people and affirms the uniqueness and uniqueness of his personality, for our Lord Jesus Christ suffered for him too. The naming ceremony recognizes the uniqueness of this particular child who has acquired the Divine gift of personality. At all times, the name of a Christian was considered holy, and therefore from childhood he was taught to respect his name.
Thus was born the tradition of giving the baptized person the name of a saint, who thus becomes his heavenly patron and intercessor. It is unreasonable to give children nicknames, calling them pretentious and exotic overseas names of TV series characters. The priest will give such children a second name, Orthodox. (It is important to know that after baptism a person acquires a guardian angel, the baby can already be given communion. Find out on what day the memory of this saint is celebrated - do not forget to congratulate the baby on Angel Day. It is best to purchase a church calendar.)
Further, through a visible action - immersion in water and anointing - the supernatural grace-filled gifts of the Holy Spirit are invisibly communicated. Immersion in the font can be complete three times (which is preferable), if, of course, the conditions in the temple allow, or three times pouring over the head, for example, for children.
At this time, the main words (formula) of the sacrament are pronounced: “The servant of God (name) is baptized.” In the name of the Father. Amen. And the Son. Amen. And the Holy Spirit. Amen".
Thus, the baptized person becomes completely new, reborn for a new life dedicated to goodness and God. After the font, the forehead, hands and feet of the person being baptized are anointed with holy myrrh. The patriarch prepares myrrh once a year, during Holy Week (before Easter), from oil, wine, fragrant herbs and aromas. After anointing, a lock of hair is cut from the head, which remains in the temple as a pledge of dedication and a symbol of sacrifice to God. If a child is being baptized in the cold season or conditions do not allow him to undress (low temperature in the baptism room), free the baby’s arms and legs in advance.
By the way
The Church prays for its children, people who have been baptized, but for the unbaptized, people of other faiths (people professing other religions), as well as those who died as a result of suicide, you can pray at home, privately.
How to choose godparents?
A godfather in Slavic culture is a godfather. After immersion in the font, the priest transfers the baby from his own hands to the hands of the godfather. The meaning of this action is very deep. By acceptance, the godfather takes upon himself the honorable, very responsible mission of leading the godson along the path of ascension to the Heavenly inheritance.
When choosing a godfather for your baby, find a person whom you completely trust, preferably an Orthodox believer. (You should not seek only material benefits in nepotism.) These could be your close friends or relatives with whom you constantly maintain good relations. According to church tradition, godparents become the child's guardians in the event of the death of the parents. For a girl you can find only one “mom”, for a boy - “dad”. At your request there can be two, four, six...
Separately, it is necessary to say about the clothes of the godparents. In the traditions of the Slavic peoples, women always had a covered head and a long dress in the temple (little girls may be an exception). Don't let the good old ways become a burden for you, because your nice trousers and new fashionable haircut can be shown off in other places. In church, it is better not to attract attention to yourself, focusing on the purpose of your parish, that is, on prayer.
Don’t take the comments of local old ladies too seriously - they often do not stand on ceremony with fashionistas, so it is better not to provoke them, respecting their advanced age.
Give your godson your time
Unfortunately, not every godparent understands why his new “position” is called that way. Visiting your godson and giving gifts on an angel’s or birthday day is, of course, good. However, this is far from the most important thing. Caring for a growing godson involves a lot.
First of all, this is a prayer for him. Learn to turn to God once a day - before going to bed. It's actually not difficult at all. Ask the Lord for health, salvation, help in raising your own children, the well-being of godchildren and relatives. It will be useful to master the path to the temple together with your child and take him to communion on a church holiday. It would be great to play educational games with your baby and read books to him. For example, many adults enjoy reading the children's Bible. It clearly describes all the main events of Sacred History.
In addition, godparents can make life much easier for young mothers who find it difficult to find time to spend with their baby. For example, in the first months our godmother tried to use her break at work to come running to us - to take a walk with the baby, to give me the opportunity to do work or just relax. She also devoted her free days or weekends to us. I think that if everyone, to the best of their ability, spends their free hours communicating with the child, they themselves will enjoy it.
What prayers do you need to know?
Every conscientious Christian needs to know the basic prayers: “Our Father”, “Virgin Mother of God”, “Creed”. During baptism, the godparents say the “Creed” prayer for the baby. All these prayers are in a short prayer book, which can be purchased at the church store if desired.
What to bring to the temple, church?
As already mentioned, baptism is birth into a new sinless life. Receiving the newly baptized person from the holy font, the godparents accept an absolutely pure being, without sin. A symbol of such purity is white clothing - kryzhma, which is brought to the temple along with a cross on a chain or thread. Who should buy a cross and who should buy a chain, let the godparents decide for themselves. At the end of the ceremony, the priest will bless them and put them on the baby.
An openwork diaper or a new towel that has not yet been washed will serve as a cover for a small child. Today there are very cute baptism sets for children in supermarkets. In Greece, for example, Christian culture is deeply embedded in life, and baptism, like other church rites, always looks very elegant. There they prepare for the sacrament of baptism in advance: they collect suitcases with baptismal clothes. For boys, these suitcases with yachts, for example, for girls with flowers. Children are baptized when they are already grown up: at 6 months or at 1-1.5 years. When everyone returns home after the christening, the suitcases are placed near the entrance so that gifts for the newly baptized person are placed in them. On the tables there are tall baptismal candles with baptismal bows on them; they are also available for a boy or a girl. Baptismal candles burn all day. On the tables there are vases with sweets or small toys for guests who came to the christening.
But let's return to Russia.
So, if the baptismal room is warm, then most likely your little one will be dipped naked. But when it is cold in the temple or an adult is being baptized, only the neck, arms and feet are exposed for anointing.
In some churches there is a tradition: to bring red wine or bread to baptisms as a symbolic donation, and also to hold lit candles during baptism. Ask the temple servants about these details in advance. Many godparents are embarrassed when the baby cries at baptism. Do not forget that children are “nervous” in an unfamiliar environment, often due to the absence of their dear, irreplaceable mother nearby. If she (the mother) is still there, and the baby is at risk of becoming hoarse, let her calm the child down. The priest can interrupt the ceremony and give the baby the opportunity to come to the “appropriate” state of mind. But during the baptism of the child, only godparents hold the child.
Advice.
Keep the baby's baptismal cover and clothes as a keepsake. Do not use it for household purposes. Since drops of myrrh could remain on the clothes, you cannot wash them, so as not to commit a sin - keep them as a shrine!!!
We are accustomed to the fact that every holiday has some kind of symbolic dish. For example, for the New Year - Olivier or herring under a fur coat; Summer holidays smell like kebabs and vegetable salads.
Cooking is an art; you have to put your soul into it. And imagination: in painfully familiar dishes, for example, add a pinch of something unusual or prepare extravagant salads or from ordinary products.
Boat salad is very easy to prepare. Despite this, it has a twist.
- One large cucumber - 150 grams;
- Fetta cheese or cottage cheese, you can take feta cheese - 100 grams;
- tomatoes - a couple, depending on their size;
- lemon juice;
- olive or sunflower oil;
- sesame seeds or sunflower seeds;
You need to take a cucumber, divide it into two equal parts, cut out the contents with a spoon and you can fill it with ingredients.
Slice the cheese, add cottage cheese or crumble Fetta cheese. Finely chop the tomatoes. Sprinkle a little with seeds - this will add piquancy to the salad.
This salad goes well with.
Season it all with olive or sunflower oil and lemon juice. Basil can be added as a decoration or used as an ingredient. The “Boat” salad is suitable for.
Girl's christening: rules and signs
Let's take a closer look at the christening of a girl - rules and signs:
- You need to arrive in advance, and when they call you to the temple, the godfather brings the baby.
- There is anointing with oil and immersion in the font.
- They put on a cross and bring it to the icon of the Mother of God.
- During the ritual, the godmother recites the prayers “Our Father” and “Creed.”
- After dipping into the font, the baby is covered with kryzhma, and the mother calms the child.
- The godfather gives a silver cross, but the godmother must take care of the kryzhma and the baptismal set.
a) kryzhma; b) baptismal set
Everything that is needed for the baptism of a girl’s child is thought out and prepared in advance: a cross, a white diaper, a baptismal dress. The godfather pays for the entire ceremony. When choosing a cross, you need to take into account that the ends of the cross do not prick the girl, so choose rounded ones. A cross or the girl’s date of birth can be embroidered on the kryzhma. It is also worth stocking up on a hat, dress and booties.
There is a sign according to which the kryzhma is not washed for a year. When the baby is sick, it can be used to cover the baby for his speedy recovery.
You can give a girl a cross chain, books, a photo album, as well as various toys and hygiene products for the holiday. The icons of the Mother of God, Matrona, and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, embroidered with a cross or beads, will become symbolic.
Remember that choosing godparents for your child is a responsible task. It is impossible to change them, even if the person does not suit you over time. An important goal of godparents is to include their godson in the church, talk about moral issues, and go to church together.
What is needed to baptize a boy child?
Traditionally, the child’s parents are not in the church, so all responsibilities are assigned to the godparents. You can be a mother, but only after long conversations, fasting, and following certain rules. The godmother brings the baby into the church, covered with a white cloth. The priest and godparents repeat the prayers. Then he is turned to the west, anointed with oil, dipped into the font and carried around it. The priest himself completes the sacrament at the altar with the child in his arms.
It is important to know what is needed for the baptism of a boy child so that the sacrament takes place at the highest level and is properly organized:
- You will need a kryzhma, a baptismal shirt and a white blanket.
- You need to choose a non-pregnant adult woman without mental illness as godparents.
- The godmother buys a silk scarf for the priest.
- The godfather is responsible for the financial side of the issue, for gifts. He must also be an adult and a person of high moral character with no criminal record. Also, the godfather must not be married to the godmother.
Festive table for a child's christening
When the baptism ceremony of a child is completed, you always want to pleasantly celebrate this event. To do this, you need to know some secrets, as well as traditions and signs.
We'll tell you how to prepare for your child's baptism and think through all the organizational issues.
How to set the table for a child's christening?
Initially, we note that the baby’s parents are involved in organizing the feast, and godparents and relatives help. If you want to celebrate a ritual according to ancient traditions, then it’s worth remembering how our grandparents did it.
For a child’s christening, dishes with the following names: “Babkina’s pies”, “Babkina’s porridge”, “Babkina’s cheesecake” are suitable. This is due to the tradition of honoring the midwife who helped the mother give birth.
So the midwife brought this porridge with her, and they called it kutya. The porridge was seasoned with butter, eggs, honey, cream, and milk was added. Decorated with eggs cut in half. There was a tradition in ancient times when a ransom had to be given for porridge.
A rooster was baked in baptismal porridge if a boy was born, and if a girl was born, then a chicken was cooked. Yeast pies in the shape of hearts, flowers, pretzels, horns, ears, birds, and buns were very popular.
Any feast is not complete without signs and gifts for each other. The mother of a baptized child was given walnuts so that her milk would be nutritious and tasty. But the older children received nuts, peas or legumes. According to legend, guys with such gifts became good speakers. Our ancestors believed that if children were given various gifts, then fate would be favorable to them.
Goat in the garden
This salad will fill your body with nutrients and beneficial substances; it’s bright and unusual, and the range of products couldn’t be simpler.

- mayonnaise or sour cream;
- salt.
Beets and carrots need to be washed, peeled, and grated. Cabbage - cut into thin strips.
Peel the potatoes, cut into slices, lightly dry and deep-fry. We chop the sausage, like everything else, into strips.
“Goat in the Garden” is good as an appetizer for strong alcoholic drinks.
Place the ingredients in heaps on a dish, pour mayonnaise or sour cream inside, corn on top, add salt and serve a refreshing salad.
This salad is a frequent guest on.
Menu for baby's christening
Naturally, in addition to preparing traditional dishes, the tastes and wishes of the invited guests should be taken into account. So, young people will prefer salads, various desserts, and it wouldn’t hurt to prepare an original cake for the holiday.
You can choose several dish options and discuss them with godparents and relatives. For example, you can prepare a vitamin salad, a children's snack, cutlets with mashed potatoes, or a fruit cake with jelly.
Also a good option would be the following menu: chicken salad, stuffed vegetables, baked potatoes with cheese, fish in tomato sauce, cottage cheese cake with berries.
What is better and more appetizing is up to each family to choose independently, because the main condition remains a wonderful, friendly atmosphere, and not a specific delicacy.
Try to have several dishes on the table so that each guest can choose something to suit their taste.
Of course, the holiday will not become truly memorable and bright if you do not take care of the cake. A real pie, made with your own hands, or a custom-made cake with a fancy design will equally delight both young and adult guests on the holiday table. The cake is also a gift from the godfather.
Who buys a cross for a christening?
Rituals are always accompanied by folk beliefs and signs.
So, people advise not to use red shades in baby’s clothes, and the kryzhma should be white. In addition, the baby must be wearing a hat during the baptism process. It is recommended to continue wearing the cap for 12 weeks. And in order for the baby’s life to be successful, during baptism they place water in a cup on the window.
Let's find out, for example, who buys a cross for a boy's christening. There is a tradition according to which the godmother buys the cross for the godson, and the godfather gives the cross as a gift. It would be appropriate to give the child and his family a Bible, which in the future he will be able to read and join spiritual life.
The baptism of a baby is a big and important holiday for any religious family, so spare no time and effort to properly prepare for this important event.
In addition, many parents believe that their child will get sick less if he is baptized, because he will have invisible protection.
Modern parents often film the ritual with a video camera and use the services of photographers, so they will have the opportunity to show this event to their adult children in the future and once again plunge into the atmosphere of the sacrament.
We wish you and your children good and health!
And one more thing - don’t be greedy and share on social networks! This is the best gratitude for us...

Flickering candles, the scent of incense, splashes of holy water sparkling in the gilding of icons, quiet prayer and the expectation of a miracle in the air. When choosing godparents for your child, remember that these are the people who will become your little one’s spiritual mentors, advisers and helpers in life. Therefore, treat the choice of godfather and godmother with all scrupulousness and prudence.
Baptism is an important event that happens only once in a lifetime. Therefore, for a long time there has been a tradition to celebrate this significant event, gathering family and friends around a rich and satisfying table. And the name of this feast is christening.
In ancient times, the main figure at christenings was the midwife, because it was she who was revered and thanked for helping the woman in labor ease her pain and the baby to be born as quickly and painlessly as possible. Therefore, one of the obligatory treats at christenings were the so-called “grandmother’s pies” - small products made from sweet yeast dough (buns and bagels, flowers, horseshoes, ears, pretzels, etc.).
Chicken with a twist
The salad got its name for its zest - secret ingredients.

Boil hard-boiled eggs. The white must be separated from the yolk and grated. Grate cheese on top.
For a romantic dinner, it is better to serve the salad in portioned transparent dishes.
On a layer of onions with mayonnaise, lay out layers of yolk with apples, grated crab sticks, coat everything with mayonnaise.
We lay out a rosette from the cheese, decorate with herbs and olives.
