What can unite a businessman and a poor man, a Hollywood star and a housewife, a poor student and a famous politician? Of course, jeans. Today it is the most democratic thing that unites people regardless of age, income and social status.
Jeans have passed their more than century-long journey as a victorious, all-absorbing blue wave. And it all started with gold, which was inconvenient to carry. The enterprising Levi Strauss, who “modeled” the miracle trousers in 1853, did not suspect that his name would remain for centuries (at least three and no end in sight).
To realize his entrepreneurial spirit, Levi, in modern terms, conducted competent marketing research. And the durable fabric he brought to the gold mines to cover tents was used to make trousers with secure pockets. This happened after one of the miners complained that not a single pair of trousers could withstand the work at the mine and the weight of the gold sand. Carrying precious sand far from the body was short-sighted: in all centuries people died for metal, and when it was so close... Trousers immediately began to be popular.
Further more - the attentive Levi took into account other wishes: strong double stitches, securely reinforced pockets, comfortable strong belt loops - his invention created a sensation at the mine. It was strengthened by a new find - metal rivets on the pockets. True, Ostrich did not invent them, but even here he did not stand aside. The fact is that the inventor, Nevada tailor Jacob Davis, according to the latest denim history, did not have enough money to register a patent, and he turned to the fabric supplier ... Levi Ostrich for help. In 1873, the rivet was patented and classic Levi's jeans appeared: five pockets, double stitching, including on the back pockets (in the form of an arch), rivets, a branded patch, button closure - the famous 501 series.
Most likely, from this legendary series in 2001, Levi Strauss & Co bought at auction for 46.5 thousand rare jeans of its own production 120 years ago. These are one of the three most expensive pairs of jeans in the world.
The authorship of the second pair belongs to the same company, but they are presented in an ultra-modern form - gold is not in the pockets, and not in the form of sand, but on the outside and in the form of jewelry. Finished with rubies and crystals, the jeans have become precious in the full sense of the word. And these two couples illustrate their history: from work uniforms to the most interesting pieces of haute couture.
History of jeans
But let's return to the history of denim fashion. Demand exceeded supply, and Levi Straus had to order fabric for his creation from the port of Genoa, which is considered the second home of jeans. Its distorted transcription gave it such a famous and familiar name - jeans. The second name - denim - was also given by the city, this time French - Nîmes. International usage and differences in transcriptions transformed “Nîmes twill” into denim. Levi Straus himself did not recognize the word “jeans” for a long time.
So, three homelands - even jeans have an international origin, it’s not for nothing that they say that ideas are in the air. And yet, America contributed to the further advancement, or more precisely, to the victorious march of jeans in the world. In addition to gold miners, cowboys became fans of the miracle trousers, who, by the way, removed the famous rivets, as they scratched their saddles.
In the 30s of the 20th century, Hollywood became interested in the cowboy theme. Courageous, loose, mysterious cowboys in such practical, comfortable and at the same time sexy-looking trousers - could there be a better advertisement?
They came to post-war Europe with the Allied army. Comfortable clothing was once again associated with freedom. At first, very slowly, she began to go beyond branded (work, cowboy, military) clothing. And since the female half of humanity began to wear jeans, jeans have become part of world fashion. How can a woman wear classic jeans of the same model? No way. Couturier - get to work!
The worst situation was for the inhabitants of one sixth of the land. In the USSR, jeans were officially banned. Again, the specter of gold dust loomed on the horizon, or rather, currency; for selling jeans one could be convicted under a currency article, up to and including capital punishment. And yet they were there. What was the outdated “half a kingdom for a horse” worth versus the current “two salaries for one pair of jeans”? Having them meant being fashionable and stylish. A symbol of the highest luck or belonging to the “away” are American Levi’s (the same Levi’s) or Wrangler.
Even in combination with a simple T-shirt or cowboy jacket, their owner was automatically classified as a fashionable part of humanity, despite the fact that there was essentially one model - classic men's. It was less prestigious to have Indian jeans. And yet it was not bad compared to those who decided on Soviet texas - obscure trousers of an indistinct blue or strange gray color. Those who acted more cunningly were those who found underground denim craftsmen; their jeans could be sewn to fit perfectly. Maybe this is another one of the secrets of denim popularity - good, well-cut jeans make the figure slimmer and more toned.
In the 80s, after some recession, a new boom began in the world - new models and accessories, division into men's and women's, a return to unisex, the influence of the most famous fashion houses. New ways of processing the material appeared, copper threads were woven, rhinestones and embroideries, prints and cuts appeared and disappeared on jeans. Only the jeans themselves did not disappear.
The new century has brought modern materials, new comfortable models of trousers and, nevertheless, jeans not only do not fade into the background, they have become absolutely normal clothing for parties, theaters and meetings of senior management of prestigious companies. Of course, you won’t go to such status events in frayed jeans with holes, or to a meeting in pink jeans with rhinestones. Although….it all depends on the strictness of the company’s dress code. In any case, jeans and high-heeled shoes, jeans and jackets (especially women's jackets) have long ceased to be bad manners.
Modern material and the model of ordinary trousers still need to be selected so that they hide all the shortcomings and emphasize the advantages. In jeans - one movement of the zipper and you will achieve what Lyudmila Prokofievna considered unattainable - at the same time “all in yourself”. Provided it's your model, of course. Well-chosen fashionable jeans are a good mood and a necessary part of any person's wardrobe.
Denim fashion
Blue and faded blue are the most trendy colors; black and gray jeans, which have become classics, are also welcome; beige and white (for summer) are on the fashion wave.
Multi-colored jeans faded into the background, as did rhinestones, sequins and embroidery. In fashion - individual jeans, for example, with hand-drawn pictures, the main thing is that it is not flashy and clumsy.
They don’t want to give up their positions; moreover, every year jeans with a low waist line are gaining more and more fans. Although for many years now, fashion designers have been proclaiming the fashion for high and super high waist jeans, bringing the denim range somewhat closer to work overalls, which marked the beginning of the emergence of jeans as a phenomenon.
So far, only models are adopting this fashion, and this is no wonder: in order to look good in such jeans, you need to have a slim figure. After all, a high waist will only emphasize wide hips. And despite the fact that, in addition to the raised waist, the length will also rise to the ankles - the main thing is that such trousers do not spoil the proportions of the figure. On the other hand, high-waisted jeans will allow you to control every extra centimeter, unlike jeans that sit on your hips. It is unknown whether the high waist will capture the minds of fashionistas and whether it will last as long as its antipode, the main thing is that it will not be the last model, jeans are forever.
In the meantime, you can remember the classics. Moreover, “five-pockets” are also trying to keep up and instead of pockets for a Breguet, penknife or tools, pockets for mobile phones, PDAs and players appear in fashionable classics.
